  • Come explore Singapore's early philatelic history with me, which included the beautiful stamps of the Straits Settlements. I follow a postcard through South Asia, learn about a Merlion, admire Singapore's incredible skyline and more on this episode of Exploring Stamps.

The post card is addressed to Miss Hume,Harbanswala (Hurbanswala), Dehra Dun, United Providences. This appears to be either the daughter or perhaps grand daughter of Allan Octavian Hume. Hume was a British member of the Imperial Civil Service (later the Indian Civil Service), a political reformer, ornithologist and botanist who worked in British India as a Colonial administrator in Oudh, Dehra Dun, Meerut and Etawah. He was the founder of the Indian National Congress. Hume’s daughter, Maria was married to Ross Scott who was a Judicial Commissioner in Oudh. Oudh was part of the United Provinces (United Provinces of Agra and Oudh) from 1904 and Scott died in 1908.

Another extremely well done and well researched video. Siam (Thailand) lies at the north end of the Malaysian peninsula and before Siam had its own international postal service, the British Consular Post Office used Straits Settlement stamps overprinted with a "B" for Bangkok from 1882-1885 to provide international postal service to satisfy demand from expatriate merchants and missionaries. In July of 1885, Siam joined then Universal Postal Union and began providing international mail service. The British Consular Post Office actually operated from 1858 until 1885 under a treaty with the Kingdom of Siam, but the highly collectible Bangkok "B" overprint stamps only appeared from 1882-1885.

I still cant get over my head how did you catch the panoramic view of the country, that's amazing stuff, Graham! Even after we seperated because of racial problems and politics, we are still very close brothers regardless of the past. I live right next to the border of SIngapore in the city of Johor Bahru, so I expect you to make an episode covering about Johor stamps in the next video 😂😂 MY UA-cam channel is still in progress, you might expect for it to be released at the end of October, I'll make sure to deliver high quality content because this script is gonna end up in a friggin long video haha. Having been to Singapore in 2002, I was fascinated with the food. I have the King George stamps that show Singapore at the bottom. I also have the sailing vessels and a few modern. What else is fun to collect are FDC of their independence, first flight of the Concorde and old envelopes with stamps mentioned above. The stamps are housed in Lighthouse stock books, tall and pocket-sized. Hunting on ebay for stamps with postmarks that have a nice "bullseye" are good eye-appeal.

One thing to note. If you translate the Tamil words 'singam' (stands for lion) and 'oor' (stands for city) the combination works out to be Singapore. It is perfectly a Tamil word. Many people who spoke Tamil immigrated to Singapore during the British era or earlier. My theory is Singapore may have been a Tamil Name as called by the first settlers.

Very interesting area and I think you can do additional 10 vids for Singapore and Straits Settlements. I didn´t know that the name is Lion city, that´s a really nice name for such a town. I will look through my Indian stamps if one has a cancellation of one of the three cities you metionend. But a question: Do you really own such a nice 4 Anna stamp from India? I have one, but far away from the condition in you video and it is cancelled.
I just got a box with several Asian modern stamps from China, Hongkong, Macao & Japan. Also I got some newer from Singapore and they are really attractive. You don´t find many newer ones in Europe and if so, the dealers offer them only for high prices. But old stamps from Straits Settlements are so popular now, that they are far more expensive than 10 years before. I think the people in Singapor, same as the Chinese people started collecting stamps from their home country. You showed several nice ones and they are also attractive. Very nice video.

Thank you Oliver. That is really interesting insight, I think you are correct with the Straits Settlements stamps being so popular now that their prices have gone up. After researching and learning about the Straits Stamps, I have really gotten to admire and enjoy them, they are fantastic. I do not own the 4 Anna stamp unfortunately (I WISH). Its just an image that I included in the video. I hope to get one at some point.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the video.

Post card- Pronunciation of quay is 'ki' or 'kee' 10:30; the world first largest postal stamp was King Edward VII $500, you can send an elephant from S'pore to London ,lol happy hunting ! oh yes, don't forget look into British Post Office in Siam ( Bangkok). Amazing postal history stamps passing thro' Singapore 1882 to 1885 by using 'B' and before and after without 'B' ! Watch out forgery and counterfeit !

I just discovered this video. Thanks for the good information.
i came across the stamps of the Straits Settlement about 20 years ago, when my cousin send me a small collection of stamps with an envelope full of straits. It contains over 100 stamps of the shown (3c) Edward VII stamps in green colour, (among other stamps)
to my surprise I found about 6 or 7 different green colors starting with light green up to an intense dark green.
The catalogue don't give any information of these different colors. Do you have any informations about these various colors?
