Very good, Graham. Here's a tip for collectors. There are many forgeries of complete map sheets, these are imperforated. For a genuine sheet with a certificate it will probably set you back a couple of hundred dollars/pounds/euros. If you see them from Italy selling for around 40 euros, you can bet they are fakes. Some years ago I bought two sheets for around 30 euros each, one with and one without gum, just for research. Both had the same map and on very close inspection they had identical flecks of red in the exact same place in the margins. Regarding genuine sheets, the perforated sheet is more expensive than the imperf. So, be aware, everybody!

I wonder if anyone has been able to piece a map together by collecting blocks or individuals?
You almost need a map to work out which ones you need to complete the set. Very cool project for someone to try to collect them all, I guess the blocks help

The first issue from Latvia is not the only time the country repurpose a stock of paper to print a stamp issue. Latvia Scott #63 were printed on the back of sheets of unissued bank notes.

What a great research uncovering our history. I would say Latvian philately is even more complicated thanks to R.Zariņš one of the main stamp designers in Russian empire, first Russian Soviet stamps (I suppose first Belarussian provisional) and then lots of iconic Latvian free state stamps and coins, his design is still on the euro coin

As always, I very much enjoyed this video about Latvian stamps. When I inherited a large stamp collection, I found a complete bank note with Latvia Scott #63 printed on the back. In order to get the complete bank note, 6 stamps on either side were cut in half, while 3 stamps in the middle are undamaged. The stamps are CTO and the bank note side is fully gummed. It is accompanied by a period letter written by a serviceman stationed in France with the following message:” I am enclosing a piece of Bolshevick money. When the Bolshevicks left Riga, this money was left behind and the Lelts being short of paper printed stamps there on.” I have kept this in my collection.
Very interesting! Also fun fact is that when the Estonians fought the Germans in Latvia for both of their independence wars, they used Estonian postage in Latvia. But the covers are rare

Nice, I briefly collected modern stamps on piece for the Baltic states, after the Soviets fell.
at a stamp show, I met a collector that specialized in these. He had over 4000, said there are I think it was 9 different maps, those in just black (maybe just one map) were scarce (many have red in areas) - but not all positions will show all colors. A fun puzzle stamp
This video really amazed me. This fact shows how important were the stamps for symbolizing the sovereignity of a Nation despite their shortage on paper. Great video👍👍👍👍👍

2. Unrolling a map! Long time since we were treated to that motif. Latvia, Lithuania, Lithuania, Latvia. I always get these two countries confused -- hopefully this visual will help. Which country were we talking about...? ;-)
3. Stamp closeup in HD. Drooling.... No stamp design is as simple as it initially looks. These annotated stamp examinations always succeed in teasing out the special from the plain.
4. Clear narration with all the historic details falling into place and interconnecting.

ad 2 - In Polish they're called "Litwa" and "Łotwa" - that was damn confusing for me as a kid especialy that I as I heard a lot about Lithuania (historical commonweatlh, Lithuanian dynasty of Polish kings etc.) Latvia was uknown for me for years :)
I was an avid stamp collector in my youth up to age 16, a hobby I shared with my father. When my father died in 1972, life took over and I abandoned the hobby. I still have both my and my father's stamps and albums but I have not really looked at them much for decades now. All the stamps, of course, date from 1972 or previous years. I have you to blame for rekindling my interest !!! Very much enjoy your excellent videos. Thank you :-) Subscribed.

I love stamps of the baltic states, the history they show is amazing. When they first were issuing stamps after the fall of the USSR, I got interested in how the international community handled their mail, since they were not a part of the UPU right away. Most ones I have are on old USSR prestamped enevlopes

@@ExploringStamps I reread what I wrote it should read, former USSR prestamped envelopes (airmail) covering the international portion of the trip with new local stamps covering the in country part of the trip Like the old Hawaiian covers that bore Hawaiian stamps to get to the US and US stamps for the rest of the trip. Collecting covers is so much fun.
Another great show, Graham. Enjoyed it immensely. As another viewer pointed out, you do have to watch out for forgeries, especially on sheets or large blocks, as there were plenty of those maps available for anyone to find, not just the post office.

After watching this excellent video I purchased a few single and double stamps printed on maps from a dealer in Latvia , then wishing to increase my collection I bought some "ordinary" old Latvian stamps from a dealer in Luxembourg I leave you to imagine my delight to find two stamps within that purchase that had been printed on the back of banknotes and wondered if you had come across this . with my regards and also thanks for your interesting and informative videos RNK

Sometimes I watch one of your wonderful videos and think "oh, I want that stamp!" And sometimes I watch a video and get the pleasure of learning about a stamp I already own 😁 in this case, I actually just recently bought one of these first issue Latvian stamps, on a whim. It was cheap and pretty and I didn't have any stamps from Latvia. I had no idea there was a map on the back because I hadn't done anything with it yet besides acknowledge that it came. I'm so excited to do a little write up about this stamp for my collection now 😁😁😁

Couldn't find a #1 1918 printing, but the semi-postals B1-4 look to be printed on brown or green bank-notes.
I'll have to check the UNmounted ones next

As Graham says - many of the other former Soviet republics like Lithuania and Estonia.
Yes there are a few, I believe Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia would all count. I THINK they all went through periods where they didn't issue stamps as well.

They had such a paper shortage, is why they did this. It's so interesting, this hobby.
Interesting, but my all time favorite of unusual paper usage is stamps printed on cigarette paper, like East Saxony under Soviet occupation, or Ceylon Revenues from the late 19th century for example...

Question about your research process. At 6:52, you zoom in on the article referring to Latvia as a dead country.
Was this article found in the APS digital library or do you search other newspaper archives when you do research?
Sure! I have a subscription to newspaper archive.com, and it’s been really cool to research stamps, events etc by going through the newspapers and searching for key words or browsing through specific dates. I plan on discussing it in my next video 👍
I had Russian WWI and post WWI stamps printed on wallpaper. I would think the map would be of more importance than the stamps itself.

Nice video man. I recently acquired a member of my familys collection left to me. I don't know much about stamps. Seriously need help because i think i have something good with over 1280 pictures in my phone of pages of stamps dating as far back as 1850s. This collection had been stored away for over 25 years before i got them. PLEASE HELP!
