Den was instrumental in this storyline. He manipulated Michelle, paid for the abortion and advised her to dump Lofty. All this because he didn't want Lofty adopting Vicky.
This is back when Eastenders has so much social commentary about life in the UK. Michelle is in a situation where she's facing the prospect of having two children before she's even 20. She's looked at Pauline's miserable life and knows that will be her future unless she takes drastic action. When you look at it that way, you couldn't blame her.
It would be interesting to go back to Day One on the Square.. but the writers will never do it. It would become painfully evident how the storylines and characters on the show have gone to the dogs over the decades. This clip was back when the show dealt with real-life challenges... now it's all emoting, no real connections.
@MeBenHalpin It sure would have done and I reckon Lofty would have wanted to throttle Den after hearing that, especially as in the early days of the show, Den often patronized him when he worked at the Vic behind the bar.
@MeBenHalpin Yeah, I reckon Pete would have landed a few on Den and Den knowing he's in the wrong would take it like a man and would feel utterly guilty about letting his friends down. I heard that when he was in prison in 1988 alongside Nick Cotton, Den got beaten up and took it well unlike Nasty Nick. Lofty and 'chelle's relationship reminds me of Kevin & Winnie in The Wonder Years. Kev thought the world of her but she didn't feel the same and often took him for granted.
@MeBenHalpin I can remember Michelle still being pregnant when she first tried to marry Lofty. Den picked a really great time to see her just before she was about to be hitched and that is what changed her mind, leading her to dump poor Lofty at the altar. Lofty would have verbally abused Den, blaming him for his marriage break-up and like you said, Pete and Arthur would have cornered him.
@MeBenHalpin I agree although like you said, Lofty looked up to Den and they even both worked together at The Dagmar. I think that is when they must have been quite pally. Also, didn't Michelle get pregnant before she got together with Lofty or was it during? I think she must have conceived in summer of '85, maybe just before she hooked up with Loft. I honestly don't think Loft would have hit him as Den would've put up a fight.
@MeBenHalpin He actually did grab hold of her at the Fowlers' place, but I think Arthur and someone else (maybe Pete) restrained him. If it was me, I would have banished her from my life.
In later years, it's really shown how much of a trainwreck Michelle was and the type of woman who treats good guys badly and falls for the wrong ones. She keeps Den's child, someone who was old enough to be her Dad, but aborts Lofty's, oh yeah, and keeps Grant's chid. 🙄
@MeBenHalpin And also, Shelle and Winnie were both mixed up girls. Winnie had a craving for wild child type guys and I think this was partly because her brother had died in the war and he was one of those cool dude types. I think she really only saw Kev as a friend but only tagged along with him because she didn't want to hurt him. Yep, I have seen the links you sent me, cheers, mate. Just been watching a bit of Den in prison. That's very nasty of the old bill to do that. No wonder.
@MeBenHalpin I reckon Pete would have done most of the hitting with Arthur holding Den but somehow I reckon Den would have resisted as he was one guy who never took to letting people walk all over him and I can remember him threatening to hit Pauline back if she slapped him once more which shows that Mr. Watts wasn't to be messed with. I guess Michelle didn't want to hurt Lofty again and genuinely felt sorry for him, even though she didn't love him.

Surprised people didn't write in saying Michelle was a horrible character who had to go or maybe they did and producers ignored them knowing fine well they were setting evil examples.
This was the 1980s. Women were given the impression they had a choice. Pregnancy was a choice. If they didn’t want to be pregnant they had the right to terminate. That choice was groundbreaking and many many people supported it. Obviously life goes round in circles and the younger generations now have gone back to being conservative (small c)…
