  • I am removing the gib key from the rocker arm cam side to remove the flywheel so I can heli coil the cam roller support stud. This one came out pretty easy but it was not rusted from sitting outside. The key at the end was stuck in the keyway and I showed a few ways to get it out the best is to use a drift punch like I did. Best to remove the grease cup assembly first so I showed what can happen with it in. Next I will set up my puller to remove the fltwheel. Phil

Absolutely love how the last part of removing it required an extra hammer 🤣🤣 hammers are amazing man

I bought this one from HIT & MISS enterprises but you could make one, some are strait with a angle, I like this one it gets into tighter spots. Good to here from you again. Thanks.

There's something to be said about having the right tool for the job!

Hello, depending on the metal that is left if you have a wire feed welder you can build up the end or weld a bolt or nut to it. You could drill and tap a hole in the end of the key and threat in a bolt for the remover to hit. I did pull the flywheel with a puller and slide the entire asembly off when well lubed. Or if you can try and drill out the gib key and pull the flywheel off. I have done all of these ways see what may work for you. Phil

I believe I will when ready, I need to make a new mounting stud first. It can be repaired two ways using the same size stud and helicoil or taping larger and turnung down a stud on the lathe, each has its pros and cons. Phil

Yes spokers are better to do I have had some real workouts on solid flywheels. Thanks for the comment. Phil

@mrstuart143 . Some of the rusted in ones can be real hard to get out, this one was never rusted and came out nice, it is the longer gib key so it will stay out some and not look like it is all the way in when installed.

Are you gonna post a video of the repair as well?

Hi Phil, Nice job showing the Gib key removal. I hadn't seen that before. Very useful. Did you buy or make the tool.. I guess it could be cut with a plasma cutter. Have a super day, Mel

Gib keys are a master piece of bad design, thats why you will never find them on any machinery today, a nightmare to remove if the head breaks off, as soon as I had removed mine off my Lister CD I took the flywheels to be broached parallel and had two stainless steel feather keys made with a locking collar either side of the flywheel. no more time wasting, struggling, cursing etc etc, just undo the outer locking collar and pull the fly wheel off. No possibility of the flywheel coming off on its own, looks neater too.,

Good advice, the pro is they hold very well, the con, can be a real nightmare to remove. lots of cursing. Phil

Gib keys are still in use today, just not as common. I worked on some food equipment a couple years ago and a big one was holding a 300 pound gear in place. I was pretty surprised to see it. Problem with gibs are, drivin to deep and hard, not machined correctly or improper techniques of removal. Correct all three of these and they work pretty nice.

Yes Gib keys have given me headaches over the years. When new and built well they work very good, I have drilled out keys, welded pull bars on them and countless other inventive ways to get them out. They do hold for sure and most of the time do not give up with out a fight. Phil

The gig head key, must be fitted correctly, you use Prussian blue a make sure you have max. contact. The fitter of the key bears a huge responsibility as death or injury can occur if not fitted correctly. You can use feeler gauges to see how the hub/flywheel distorts as you drive the key in. If you have trouble driving key out, you tack weld key to shaft and drive hub/flywheel away from key head, then dress shaft to remove hub

What engine do you have is it spoke or solid flywheel, how bad is the key. Can you grind it flat and drill out or is there some left to weld on. Do you have a puller or metal to make one for the flywheel , After drilling you can heat up hub to warm only and pull flywheel and key as one. Many ways to do this. Phil

IronAcres I think I can grind it and I suggest drill the key way so it gets loose..then maybe use a bar behind the pulley to move it out or possibly try make some puller up using a bolt to push along shaft...any other ideas?
