Huge thank you to:
Ayu and Agung - For cooking amazing authentic Balinese food
Pak Choi - For arranging everything for us
Made - For driving us around
Lawar is a traditional Indonesian Balinese dish of which there are many variations, but typically it contains shredded coconut, and some kind of meat, and as I would find out and learn myself - pig’s blood.
Ayu is such an impressive cook, and for the different types of lawar, she mixed and matched all the ingredients, and mixed up everything with her hand to create these incredible salad like coconut mixtures. I didn’t know this until Ayu told me, but the traditional versions of Balinese lawar typically contain some raw blood mixed in, which creates a type of sauce.
After Ayu mixed up a bunch of different types of lawar, we sat down for what was easily one of the best meals I had in Bali, Indonesia. The food was impressively delicious, and the love that went into the cooking was also a huge contribution to what made this meal so special. This is one of those meals I’ll never forget.
Thank you again to Ayu and Agung, Made, and Pak Choi!

It was a huge honor to have this meal experience. And even though it contains raw blood, which I fully understand if it's not your preference (and I warned about in the title), I would greatly appreciate it if you would respect the culture and culinary traditions shown. Thank you so much for watching!
Mark Wiens yeahhhhh agree.
Where will you be going next!!
Actually it tastes good all the blood part .. big respect for you mate
Mark Wiens agree! Just respect the culture and culinary by not typing negative comments!
Mark Wiens i really appreciate it mark, dont mind those close minded people, for me your vid is not all about food, but how you introduce the culture, tradition and authentic stuffs from many places is what makes your channel "has it all", people should learn how to appreciate things more, they dont need to travel and have mark to show many things, adding to their knowledge, yet they still hating, this is why our world is going to hell.. keep up the good work !

*Woman:* More blood?
*Mark:* However the way you eat it.
See mark, this is why i love your channel. You showed a big respect and want to learn the local culture.
agree
Agreed
Yeah :v by eating blood... It can cause disease man!!...
Marks definitely got a big set of balls eating anything. He keeps it 💯
So agree
My mom live in Bali for about several years and she also told me about that kind of lawar. That kind of lawars are rare and only served in some particular ceremony. Not all of Balinese food mixed with raw pig's blood and not all Balinese CAN EAT raw pig's blood. Note that guys...
Yeah,thats true
Yep true...
Not to mention she mixed those foods with bare hands 😑
@@KimAhrina11 addition to the flavor, yummy😋
Mark is truly the friendliest youtuber alive. He respected other cultures and brought out the best of them with sincerity.
sun shine of course, Me as Indonesian must be proud of him as the best vlogger ever who’s well known for his sincerity.... need to appreciate him thou...
Very much agree. His sincerity is one that many other vloggers dont have. Thank you Mark and I hope your buzz will cause the food of my country to be better known out there and so made it more available overseas.
dracula
110% Agree! Although i know he probably ever had a bad experiences from time to time, but he keep shows the goodness of other culture. That's amazing.

This is culture shock even for indonesian likes me (I'm Sundanese). But respect to our Hinduism Balinese brothers.
Thank you Ika!
You're welcome mark 💕
kumaha neng. damang?? meni geulis pisan euy neng. salam dr bali
Ika Faizah i from the netherlands my husband is Balinese these dishes are so good
This is nothing to do with Hinduism or Islam its their culture...
Lawar used many spices and herbs like turmeric, ginger, pepper ground, lime, galangal, coconut oil etc etc. it called base genep. It will neutralize raw blood bad effect. In the video ibu ayu not tell the detail of spices and herbs they used
mira virgayanti lol where did you get that theory 🤣
Me as Indonesian, have never try to eat that kind of dishes. You're the man, Mark! The real "omnivore" 💪😂🙈
Marcellinus Jonathan Yeah Me too 😂😂😂
Indonesia is NOT a muslim nation. The people on Bali are Hindu.
mehboob gani no, Indonesa isn't a Muslim country, but most of our people are Muslim and we respect each other's culture.
leave us alone
mehboob gani Indonesia is NOT a Muslim countries, where the hell did you pick that statement thou? Learn about history!
Cmon guys, it's just blood. It courses through the veins of almost all meat we eat. It is very popular in the UK, and is mixed with fat, we call it black pudding. Not raw, but still, blood is blood. Another amazing video, such lovely culture and people.
Mark, I have such a huge respect for you. Even me, as an Indonesian, I don't even want to try that dish with raw blood!!!! You're amazing!
Balinese people are so friendly and warmth. I hope to go there again.
Gm Mark Wiens and family,I love how they teach you how to mix ingredients together to get the perfect taste!!! I gotta say it shows on your facial expression 😆 the drone footage :)) VERY beautiful.!!!!
Some of the comments are unbelievable. He already put a warning and asked that we respect their culture and cuisine. You don't like it, don't need to say unnecessary things. Raw blood in food so what... Suddenly people online are being medical experts. With that said....very interesting food vlog. What an eye opener! I feel like I am travelling along with you and ying!
idontlikebadjokes
Totally agree with you. It's like travelling with Mark Ying and Micah and experiencing their travels. Respect to Bali culture and how they've prepared their wonderful food for 1000's of years. Another great vlog Mark 😎
It is a comment section whether there is a WARNING or not....you gave your opinion and other folks can give theirs just the same and no you or others don't have to like it.
raw blood is disgusting, try yourself some human blood,
I eat a lot of different things, but I've never tried raw blood before. Do you know why pork blood is so prevalent in these dishes? They look delicious, regardless if there's raw blood in it.
this is why mark weins is the top food blogger on youtube. huge respect for culture.
The new Mavic shots take the videos to a whole new level! Awesome 😊😍
Awesome video pak Mark Wiens, i love how you respect the culture as how natural the food making process and also the taste.
Would be great if you visit sulawesi too (manado, makassar etc) they have great savoury food and many variety of fish dish. Even if i wish you could try central java food too (because im from solo) but it wouldn't really pleased your taste because mostly too sweet.
raw blood lawar, the most favorite menu for big ceremony in Bali
Hello Mark and hello everyone. I'm from Bali. The blood is fresh. Lawar with raw blood must be eat before 4 hours after mixed. If u don't like lawar with raw blood, you can fried it after mixed with raw blood and it will be longlast. u can choose to use either pork or chicken blood. Its a must to try food when u come to Bali. 😊
you ate lawar, you know the sensation of the balinese food. you'll never find like this at another place... appreciate your respect to our culture and culinary... thanks mate...
Wow, thank you so much for the amazing vlog Mark. I'm Balinese and now live in Japan for studying. Somehow I missed my home a lot after viewing your video. Lawar is the one that I really really want to eat right now 😢 you should try belayag, buah wani (wani fruit), pie susu, and so on, there's abundant of traditional Bali food which have incredible flavour and of course tasty 😉
You ate that lawar? Also di Bali campur makanannya traditionally pake bare hands begitu sambil di squishy?
This is the oldest, authentic and traditional way to make lawar. Mostly at restaurant or waroong they didnt make lawar with pig blood so dont afraid to eat lawar at restaurant/waroong because they are clean (didnt use raw blood) and mostly kosher/halal
Looks bloody fantastic mate! Cheers from Australia, come over for a schooner and a parmy soon brother!
Lawar actually a food that usually served on special occasions like festivals, weddings because of the complicated preparations back at the ancient days. Nowadays it is served as home cooking because you could buy the prepared ingredients right away from the market. Some region has their own specialty Lawar which is has different main ingredients such as star fruit leaf, underripe papaya or young coconut shell as the main ingredients and they have their own unique flavor. Even there is a lawar that has endangered turtle as the ingredients but it became rare because of the ingredients is hard to find and it is banned by the goverment as well. It is a pleasure to have you in bali. I hope you have 1 more time to visit bali
It might be so extreme for some ppl, but I do respect their heritage cuisine. We don't go eat but we just love how colorful Indonesia is.
Heritage that causes world wide epidemic and kills thousands, eating bats, rats, sneaks, dogs, cats is not normal man
@@hatem19sennin even the locals didn't eat those kind foods, it's not really heritage tho but more like small amount of people with their own free will that eat those kind foods
Spectacular video Mark! You're just confirming that I have to go to Bali. What amazing food. I have to mention your drone work as well. Thank you for the glimpse inside a traditional compound too. One of your best vlogs yet! Well done.
i appreciate more of Bali because of your vids...great work Mark!
Tomorrow I will make Sambal Matah with fried organic chicken 😁
A well done video, Mark! You surpassed 200+ millions of Indonesianwho never eat lawar, especially the one with blood. Great achievement!
I've never seen a video of your food travels that I didn't like and that doesn't change now. While many of us have not had the experience of raw blood, it means a lot to many foodies of us in world that you are willing to have the experience and share it with us. I love the diversity of this dish, the culture it derives from and learning experience your travel provides.
It's raw blood kinda different.. Thanks for showing this mark different kinds of food... "I want the way you eaten" it's shows ur passion towards food
nu y
Mark is one of the most passionate person towards food I ever seen. He respects others cultures and he try all the food without any complaint. His love for food is undeniable.
Oh wow finally i see lawar blood that my mom always told me whenever i asked about bali food, i'm gonna tell my mom this video, can't wait to see her reaction 😀
same. my mom always warn me about the blood in balinese cuisine. first, it didn't makes sense for me but ,after watching Mark Wien's video, i'm understand now. well still love sambal matah and ayam sereh tho
lawar goes bad in as quick as 6 hours after serving, that is why it is such a privilege to be able to taste it right in its homeland bali, probably very difficult to get outside
Mark is very special..Not all Indonesian commonly try to eat raw food which is mixed with blood..great respect for you ⚘
I love how they use paper and leaves folded for food storage and serving! Such a clever use of available resources!
if without the raw blood i think the taste still stunning.
Indonesian food is AWESOME😋😋😋😋🤗🤗🤗🤗
Come and try it👍
dumb bule comments are really not helpful to learn about Indonesia and see hands for corruption and lying is the ''Culture'' with the Javanese and their family of Azteks in Bali too.. see ua-cam.com/video/mHH05KtqOR4/v-deo.html
No Its Not Its Look So Dunb food
@@iawarenow658 yup ur right
دم خنزير عاجبك يا اهبل
5:33 "she such an expert at mixing with her hand" hell yeah lol
You are a good person mark. Esp after learning on the sight that the food contains raw pig blood, your facial expressions and thoughts were kept to yourself. You are so in tune with people and the same warm bubblie guy where ever you are. If you are having a bad day, you cant tell in your videos. God bless you and your family!
In the village of Ketewel, Gianyar is famous for its distinctive "Lawar Plek" which is different from the type of lawar in the area in Bali, using only fresh meat, blood, sliced skin, fried onions, fried chili sauce, and the most delicious stuffed with green pepper or often called "Mica Matah".
Or mica gadang (green pepper)
Yup this is my favourite kind of lawar. Traditional pig blood lawar. Im happy that you've tried this on your trip to Bali. You should try ayam betutu next.
The best part of the day is watching your videos!
Me too honestly! :)
I'm from indonesia, but I'm not in bali city. And I enjoy your videos!
Bali is not city
@@yogaaliansa5019 oh sorry, i mean Bali Island
This kind of lawar is traditional food in bali. I eat it since i was a little child and i never got got sick because of it. It is actually amazingly tastey
I love how you're open to new experiences and not one to shy away from things. I mean try everything once, you're in Indonesia have things you'll never be able to have anywhere else.
People here wondering about blood, they can eat raw meat then what's the problem with raw blood??
Just they bit worry if contain any virus or bacterial...
finally, the real lawar with blood! keren!
I'm guessing that the random rolling apple and the sound of dropping utensils are Micah's contribution to the video. 😂 Great video, Mark. I'm too scared to eat anything with raw blood (I like my steaks medium-well), but I'm glad that we got to see you try this. 😊
thakyou mark for sharing the beauty of bali... your videos is so friendly to watch for those who dont know much about bali
Instead of complaining about the blood you should be glad, that there are guys like Mark, who shows us this types of food.. You don't have to eat it, but can see it, see the culture..
This is why i love mark ❤ enjoy bali mark
Mark pls come to Padang and try eat real/original Rendang :)

This is the best watching Mark's videos. I love these local homemade foods. Such comfort foods often tell the culture and history of such local area. Thanks Mark!

That intro was hardcore. I am not normally squeamish with any food but that really made me feel a little funny.
Wow, he really puts being a true food vlogger to the test
What a beautiful experience! Thank you for all you do.
Consumption of undercooked animal products is a well-established risk factor for acquiring many infectious diseases
In very small amounts, blood might not harm you, beyond that watch out.
Great video!! Travel for food and also culture. I like their smile, that is awesome : )
Maaan, even as a Balinese I can't stand to eat any Balinese food which contain blood 😅
Made Subekti 22 :v
Me too.. 😂😂
I am balinese too, and i dont eat lawar with blood :)
You're visiting Bali at the perfect time. coz Friday morning, every Balinese people are cooking massive traditional Balinese food for kind of the biggest ceremony in Bali. Anyway, I'm a big fan of you. I'm Balinese, live in UBUD the area you're staying.

Jamu's are traditional Balinesian-Indonesian herbal remedies. They come in many forms, usually powders or pills. Made with different herbs, roots, spices; one either takes with water (pills) or make a tea with it (powders) then drink. Good to take after eating very rich fatty foods. Some Jamu's are also to be used externally for skin conditions. It's very popular for herbal beauty regimen and worked well for me. Not many people outside of Bali or Indonesia know about them, but they have been used for generations and are very good. As with any foods or health remedies, just make sure to first check contraindications with your MD if you take any western medications or have serious health issues.
When i watching that mark be honest I’m not feel hungry hahaha 🤣 sorry about that
Some people here in the Philippines eat dinuguan which is also made of blood😀😀😀😀😀
The Hungry Syrian Wanderer but its cooked one😁
This is much extreme food trip ^^
The Hungry Syrian Wanderer thanks for. loving our foods, even i know you havent try dinuguan in the Philippines, coz its made by pig parts and pig blood..
🤪🤪ewwww
Did u eat dinuguan???😏
I’ve had dishes like these before in s.e. Asia. The blood is fine. I wouldn’t seek it out to try again but it wasn’t unpleasant. There are far to many judgemental, Ill educated, unadventurous people making comments on here. Mark shows you truly authentic traditional foods and half of you all can’t even handle it,,
So good to see village people never waste any part of the animal. Wish the world would be more like this. This shows Respect to the animal. Love your work mark.
Raw blood???? Man unbelievable....but all respect for their culture..and salut to mark for trying everything Everytime in every place and describing in detail....hats off mark

When in Rome do as the Romans ......... first off Mr Wiens much respect I thrive on your videos I am glad you have the videos that I can enjoy. I'm pretty sure you made sure that the food was set up correctly before you ate there so folks who are unsure of this he did give a warning before hand keep em coming
Wow. You are courageous..... No way could I have eaten pig blood or any kind of blood raw....
It was hard to put aside my own ideas on what was “good” food, but I was glad to watch you eat and enjoy. It’s awesome to see how other cultures prepare their dishes.
The roosters wanted to take over lol 😂
I can't stand the sound of food squishing when she mixing with her hand. Not sure why tho..

Jamu 20:20 also exists in Java. It has many health properties. It has many varieties using many herbs and spices.
Pork raw blood? no way for me! Dinuguan?? Yes please!!
Raw blood ?
lawar tulen....tulen is like the real one or the original.
I loved it when the apple 🍎 or potato 🥔 comes rolling past at 10:50.
Those roasters are going bananas there are not stopping, I don't think chicken scream like that
This culture shock for me 😅 even im Indonesian but i cant eat thats because I'm a Muslim.
But i still like your video. Nice
I always get hungry after watching your videos.. but this video? After watching blood? I am not eating my dinner tonight.

What's the problem ? Michelin star restaurants dishes serve Steak Tartare and Carpaccio and get rave reviews. Customers line to order raw meat dishes which has blood as an ingredient. So now you are the PC police...ffs if you don't like what you see then f... off to where someone might care about your sad/miserable opinion 😡
It's doesn't matter, cause any kind of animal blood would neutralized within the balinese herbal which we called "base genep" so the mixture & taste should be great,,, Anyway, I'm truely Balinese people
😛
Hello m pakistani plz in pakistan and try our delicious foods

Reymen Hadi whats the matter of instant food? They doubtly have bacteria in it as protected by the packaging. The factories of these instant foods have strict rules regarding to hygiene.
@@bullracing1 dont breath bro, theres a lot of bacteria in the air...

I had no chance to try Lawar during my past visit to Bali few years back. I will go and try it out if I hv another chance to pay Bali a visit! Thanks Mark for making such great video.
Wow Bali looks like paradise I need to go there someday.
