Aprilia 650cc Motorcycle Engine Tear Down! 💥🔨

- Tearing down a Aprilia 650cc Single Cylinder Rotax engine used in the Aprilia Pegaso 650 also used in the BMW F650. This is how you take a motorcycle engine apart the wrong way! haha
Also note I now realise what I thought was a oil temp sensor is in fact oil pressure!
Quick history of this engine.
Aprilia Pegaso 650cc Rotax engine from 1997. It has covered around 40,000 miles. It was not looked after well. The engine was stopped being used as it was dumping oil in the airbox and was cheaper to replace than fix.

I loved this video! differernt to see how a engine works with breaking it all down.
Thx this helped me with my current project. You gained a subscriber.
Welcome!
Loving this!!! Keep it up :D
Lidl was selling a electric impact the other week and it was only £20 I brought one and would recommend it sooo much at that price it practically does the same as my £200 makita one would highly recommend it and it has done me very good
Hey Spicy great vid im not really mechanically minded at all so I really enjoy these vids. can't wait for part 2. I know you're not into football, but will Cecil be watching the world cup final should the mighty ENGLISH!! get there? 😂
Wow i need the inlet stubs for my pegaso, are you going to be using them again?
Having the 3rd intake valve cam at a different rotation to the other two draws out the time the inlet valves are open and allows more fuel and air mixture into the cylinder head before they close to allow for combustion and the two exhaust valves open. There are only two exhaust valves because it's a lot easier for exhaust fumes to get out than it is for fuel and air to get in.
Makes sense!
There are also 3 intakes instead of 2 to take up more surface area in the top of the cylinder which would allow more fuel in again. My partner has a 98 R1 which has 5 valves per cylinder so there are 20 valves to check when they start tapping RIP 😂
Great video... working on my BMW F650GS, with similar (not the same ) Rotax engine...
I keep thinking when watching this;
"When in doubt, mallet"
Someone f-ed up my mind :O
Damn that piston is huge compared to my scooters 50cc :D
You ridden one of these bikes? How does such a big single behave? It must have a lot of low end power even relative to your DRZ.
Hello! Do you know what is the accepted gap for piston rings?
Sadly no
Nice,l have one Aprilia650 and l need pistel and rinds please
Any chance you can make more up to date video on how to change a sprocket?
Possibly as i need to do the DRZ soon
spicy110 cool and grate video btw :)
possibly make the tank eh :3 i always enjoy watching things being taken apart (that cam chain might be good as tank tracks)
Yet it's very depended on if i have parts.
Too small and i down have 4 gears.
damn, i really hope you can make it tho
last 2 hrs have been working out if i can and its looking quite possible atm
awh hell yeah :) imma donate a bit more through paypal to try and help out once ive made some food
How many miles is a lot for a bike because depending on the car a 120000 miles would seem like a lot to me how many would be a lot on a bike?
Yay!
I don't know how much they go for, but an oxy-acetylene torch cuts seized nuts like that off in literally seconds. It takes longer to light and adjust the torch than to cut the nut.
CVH engines (constant velocity head) have rockers, so it would be a rocker cover on that. This is an DOHC engine (double overhead cam (camshaft)), so it is a cam cover ;)
Also you were right the first time, the cam lobes push down on the top of the valves. The grittiness has got to be metal fragments unless someone deliberately put sand in there. As you said, the engine was poorly maintained, that means oil was not changed enough not getting rid of metal shavings. To help extra if you like your engine, it's worth getting a magnetic sump plug to hold onto a lot of the shavings from normal wear.
You mean Compound Valve angle Head?
Aldi special buys, impact driver £50 18v with 2 batteries, you'd just need to go Screwfix or Toolstation and get the adapter for s socket, will be a couple quid
very nice video, i actualy own one of these. A little correction the Rotax Engines Bmw put in their Bikes had only 4 Valves. =)
One of the most common Problems with these Engines are the Clinder Head Caskets, could you probably take a look at it or even show it if it has some missing or burnet spots?

Arrr the more you know! 🙂
My 03 f650gs wont go into first what is the cause and fix for that no noise all other gears work fine
Why not use a dual over-head cam ;)
doing it all wrong 12 drinks b4 touching any Engine
i need the engine for the aprilia 650cc 2005 can u sell it to me?
This engine was done hence why it was stripped and used in my metalworks business.
Only some tools were harmed in the making of this video.
Haha naa they are all fine.😁
Try not to put your phone on the workbench you're using. just a tip from someone who learned this the hard way 😂
Haha i have a video on this subject. for some reason i just don't break phones. I have never cracked or smashed a phone. Other than the back of the phone and both those times it was unavoidable. ☺ i just like scaring people i guess...
Who else noticed the thyme hahaha
I think it's the same engine used in mt-03 and xt660, also my bike
Edit: No it's not, the Yamaha engined ones are the later versions
Just checked and it's not the same. 👍

Here,s a bit of useless information Spicy Did you know that Rotax was a British Company part of Lucas Industries, I used to work for Lucas Aerospace and part of the Factory in Hemel Hempstead was called the RPP short for Rotax Precision Products. Sadly it's now just a waste land no longer supplying parts for the Harriers,Sikorski,s or Airbus,s and Stingray Missiles..Rotax made Ball Screws for Aircraft Undercarriages and Actuators as well as Engine's mainly for Aircraft.
It all came to and End due to a certain Politician called Maggie😠.
Thanks for the info that is both sad and interesting. I wish i was born at a time we made more stuff i would have been a apprentice as soon as I left school.
spicy110 Yes it's a Great shame for a lot of Talented younger generations missing out on a good better paid Career....I bet you would have made a Top Apprentice as like I was you ain't afraid to rip stuff apart to suss out how it works Top Man👍👍👍
That's interesting I have the rotax v990rp engine in my bike .
.
Poor little engine...
