    Hi! Thank you for the review!
    So prior to putting my dogs on this food, I first had them on Blue Buffalo, then Hills, then Purina pro plan sensitive stomach. For each of those foods, recommend by my vet, my pups had horrible stool. I’m talking constant mushiness and when semi-firm, it had yellow and Orange mucous in the stool.
    I started looking into raw, freeze dried and came across this food. Then voila, now their stool is firm, not dry, but a really good stool, no mucous. Their skin is also much better. I get what you’re saying, but my dogs are so much better on this food.

      It’s all about the individual, I’m talking about in generalities in these videos. Your pet may have specific needs and this deviation from the standard may be right for them. When I see my personal patients these would be all the things we discuss. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

      I don’t make recommendations on this Chanel, I reserve that for my individual patients whom I am personally acquainted. I review what I’m asked. And these video are meant to stimulate thought and maybe drive specific questions to your personal vet. There are certainly foods that get close to perfect, but perfect for my pet may not be perfect for your pet

    A few points I feel need to be addressed... First of all, "biologically appropriate" is not a marketing tactic specific to dog foods; it's a phrase commonly used especially in wildlife cases to define what foods are most appropriate and beneficial to a species. Dr. Karen Becker used a perfect example in an interview: a worm's biologically appropriate food is dirt and a hummingbird's is nectar. But you would never feed a worm nectar or a hummingbird dirt. Another phrase I believe you misinterpreted is "whole prey diet", as this is NOT the same as by-product. By-product is defined as "the leftovers of an animal after its been slaughtered and all desired edible parts have been removed". So, yes this can mean organ content as well, but the big difference here is the quality. Whole prey implies all edible parts of the animal, including the desired parts that are removed from by-products. Also, AAFCO is a non-governmental organization with zero regulatory authority. They basically just help enforce what pet food companies can say on their packaging and provide minimum nutritional requirements, although these requirements do not specify where the nutrients have to come from. I'm not saying AAFCO is bad, I'm simply stating they're not a true regulatory authority like the FDA is.
    Lastly I would like to say, I acknowledge your education and practice, but unfortunately I believe traditional veterinarians simply are not given the proper training and guidance when it comes to pet nutrition -- from a wildlife biologist

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your perspective. My point is none of that is relevant if the food can’t meet the basic published nutrition standards. If they did, then of course all other aspects come into play. Also what other supplemental training would you feel vets should have. Many of us have secondary and tertiary degrees in fields such as animal science and biology such as yourself. I have the opportunity to give feedback to certain veterinary colleges to I may be able to make helpful suggestions

    • @cleomartini7576
      @cleomartini7576 8 місяців тому +2

      @@AnimalDocRea I'd beg to differ the food does meet basic nutrition standards, but that's just me. There seems to be many online variations of the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles, but with the ones I found there was no maximum for protein and fat. Also this could be debated because I think we can agree every dog is different, and some may require more or less protein/fat than others. As for the supplemental nutrition training for vets, I'm not sure what is commonly available there, but it would be nice to see more educational courses that are not supported or funded by pet food companies in any way. In my experience, I learned the most with wildlife and animal rescue rehabilitators and seeing what they feed their animals and the extraordinary progress and success rates they receive. These rehabilitators usually feed fresh, whole foods to their animals, and absolutely no packaged foods/meals. There's a huge difference in nutrient bioavailability depending on where the nutrients come from (fruit, grains, meat, etc) and what species is eating the food (horse, cat, raptor, etc). My current dog cannot digest any fruit, veggie or grain properly. He gets extremely gassy, constipated and smelly. Yet, when he eats purely fresh meat, he does fantastic without any issues! Overall, it's great to know there's so many options out there for pet food as obviously not every dog is going to do well on the same food :)
      Fyi, I don't even feed Orijen dog food but I've seen dogs do really well on it which is why I felt the need to comment.

      I appreciate it, it’s good to get people thinking. Also, the text I use to reference is small animal clinical nutrition and a free link is in my description box. I believe there may be a chapter on wildlife. Wildlife Medicine is out of my lane so I’m not one to comment on species I’m not familiar with. I do work with an associate that does exotics and wildlife in my practice and some of thier nutrition requirements are wild. It’s also sad how many of the exotics we see are because of the nutritional or husbandry deficiencies because of lack of proper public education. I’m trying to get her to do a little information session maybe on Instagram but she’s really shy so….

    The whole thing with byproducts confuses me. You get people shouting from the rooftops about how awful byproducts are, but if you look at pretty much any raw diet, a good portion of it is most likely byproducts. I have no issue with them so long as they're clearly labelled on the packet - but that goes with virtually every ingredient for me, I can't stand vagueness when it comes to ingredient labelling :')
    Just to ask - with the nutritional requirements for dogs that you show in your review videos, do you have those available to download? It'd be incredibly helpful to have them saved so that I can refer back to them when needs be. Especially since my dogs are technically seniors, but they're still doing great on an adult dog food so I want to have the information for senior dogs on hand just in case they need it c:

The advice I’m giving is actually the gold standard and is current. As a veterinarian I don’t have the luxury of making recommendations to my patients that are contrary to the current literature. When sufficient studies have been done and the experts revise their recommendations, I will advise otherwise. Thank you for the discussion, I appreciate your perspective. It would take just a few letters to list it in the ingredients but they didn't. EGGS yeap BUT WHICH ANIMALS...

      No otc diet would be restricted enough for a food trial for a truly allergic dog due to cross contamination and processing. Food trial diets have a special process and are prescription. Therefore the type of egg really isn’t relevant.

    Champion was purchased by Mars, Inc. The company that makes all of those healthy candy bars and snacks. Mars owns 43% of the pet food market. They own Pedigree, Whiskas, and Royal Canin among others. Mars also owns two large veterinary clinic chains. I realize this is about dog food. Cats need the nutrients from secreting organs, such as kidneys and liver. They are certainly not "by-products" and better than corn gluten meal. There have been numerous dry pet food recalls, due to salmonella. I feed my two cats three small meals a day. Their main diet is raw ground beef. Once a week, they get a tin of sardines and some beef liver. They also get two different brands of grain free wet food. I can see why you shout out to Glenn's channel. I like it too! We have had some good discussions, : )

    Its so infuriating. You hear one person saying Orijen is good and then another say its not. What is pup parent to do? We want to feed our pups/dogs good food that is doesn't cost to much money.

      I’m a numbers person so I go with the numbers and data. So for me I believe in concrete evidence driven decision process. That’s why I share with you the numbers and then let you decide. Now you have seen the data I present and compare that to the other data you have heard. The problem is a lot of what others say is not data driven but emotion driven or hypothetical extrapolated from human nutrition and medicine and that’s what’s confusing. Just because it’s more expensive doesn’t mean it’s better or the “ingredients” are better or even that those ingredients are compiled in a way that’s nutritionally sound. That’s what the companies want you to think and naturally it seems that would be true, but I’d like to show a fresh perspective illustrating that is not always the case.

    What annoys me is the fact that these companies get away with it
    Also the extortionate prices the companies charge it’s just awful for a sub standard food which they couldn’t care if any dogs suffered I myself wouldn’t touch this dog food with a barge pole

      And as a vet I often feel defeated because people will believe a publicly traded company with no personal knowledge of their pet over a doctor who sees the pet every year and has a personal and emotional investment into their pet. But that’s what millions of dollars of marketing can achieve.
