- "Arthur McBride" is an Irish anti-war or 'anti-recruiting' song about a violent confrontation between a recruiting sergeant, his party and two young Irish men: one of them being the song's narrator, the other his cousin Arthur McBride. Along with other anti-recruiting songs, "Arthur McBride" became widely popular during the First World War, when the Saxons were attempting to enforce a general conscription law in Ireland. Albeit that the song was actually set during the Napoleonic Wars or an earlier time period.

Ireland holds captive the hearts of all who glimpse her. She is most beautiful, bedecked in verdant finery and crowned by grace and wonder. It is no secret to me why so many would be willing to die for her; she has always had that allure. Even Agricola gazed across the Irish Sea with longing

Have you read the Mabinogion?
Which Irish tribe were the best Celts?
I don't know, I'm Northern Scottish. It's seems to me that my people take everything too seriously! Not much fun. The Irish people that I have known have a sense of humor..They like jokes, both verbal and practical. In short I enjoy their company.
Their never SULLEN!
Why would you follow mythology it's horsshite. You only need your Bible
@@kurtbogle2973McBride is an Ulster name, isn't it?
I call this the Clare Daly "Peace Song. " May she and her family have a Merry Christmas.

Little did the narrator know, he himself would later join the British Army and would be killed in France. The narrator’s name was Willie McBride.
Green fields of france
Why would he join the british army?
@@jimtom4878wouldn't be by choice, I'd imagine.

I'm Irish american. My dad had a friend named colby I won't drop the last name incase you're him lol
Three commercials for one song?
The only thing in the song that bothers me is them beating up the drummer boy
Only Sergeant Napper and Corporal Vance get a shillelagh over the head. The little wee drummer gets his rowdy dow dow flattened and thrown into the sea and they bade it a tedious return.
The Irish having an anti-war song? That's a new one... lol
Anti War as in being against being recruited by Britain to fight their wars.
pretty based ngl
Does anyone know what film/show this is from?

It’s a music video for another version of the song. Forgot the name tho
It not an anti war song as such. Its an Irishman being anti joining the British army by force or necessity.
Christy Moore singing The Sun has come to Earth is apt at this time of war that my English government are supporting Not in my Name
This is a song about draft dodging.
It’s about the oppressor trying to get the oppressed to fight for the occupier.
@@seanfagan8490 fighting for the occupier isn't very sportsman-like.
Well nice to hear, but I do prefer the old version by Planxty
tbh i like this version better. though planxty has some GREAT songs like follow me up to carlow and raggle taggle gypsy-o
Paul Brady’s version is better tbh
@@mateusz14100 Brady`s version is THE one. ❤
This is good but the original 7 minute version by paul brady is way better
Is that a joke? You know this is an old folk song, right? It dates back to the Napoleonic wars. Paul Brady was far from the first to sing the tune
@@SavageMinnow sorry i didn't know (its still the best cover i've heard though)
I finally figured out what I love about this song.
It's a anthem against the corruption of Capitalism!
