    I thought it is only my country that professors can’t teach us how to teach, but now I know many of us around the globe are struggling with the fact that university is all about theories and not about practicing in real situations. Thanks a lot. Keep on the good work.

      @@magdalenekatiti6650 Hi. We had. The problem was that the professors wanted to see us applying their favourite theories in our classes, not the applicable ones according to the real situation. In addition, we never had a course for class management, so we had to learn it by experience in only 6 sessions of teaching during internship.

    Next week I'll be giving my first class to highschoolers. I'm not a teacher, just a student, and I will teach this class the entire year despite not having or persuing a teaching degree. The school can't find a qualified math teacher so the class is without a teacher atm. It sucks for them being without a math teacher, I know I wouldn't have loved math if it wasn't for my great teacher. I feel like everyone should get great math education, so I want to be the best teacher I can. Thanks for the videos!

    Thanks Eric. This is great. Thanks for pointing out that having a fun class is different than being entertainment. This is so helpful.
    I also like to point out that not making eye contact with students can convey to them that their presence is not important and the teacher doesn't have time to acknowledge them, especially if a student is shy or has low self-esteem.

    Much good stuff here. This video is excellent. I'm a substitute teacher and I will integrate many tips from this video as I'm constantly facing new students.. I like the idea of standing in the middle of class as they walk in and making eye contact and keeping that contact until a student looks away. I like the reciting of rules especially respect everyone around you and be quiet when another person is speaking, then asking students to repeat those rules- I would keep it simple and use those two important rules. I like the idea of saying 3,2,1 then I will expect everybody to be quiet. And the practice interviewing a classmate then having each student introduce that person to the class is a fun idea when I need to fill time. About the eye contact, the John F Kennedy speech class he had at Harvard emphasized the importance of eye contact with a key saying- "don't talk to anything that can't talk back to you". That even if you are scanning a group from person to person dont begin speaking until you make eye contact with somebody.

    I have a question, how do we engage different ages into learning styles? Not just one particular class and not just one particular lesson. A curriculum created to create the whole entire class introduction mass. You have great points, but it's so hard to make sure a student is paying attention entirely. Being a student, I always thought I had a hard time being one of the many to pay attention to what I can't pay attention to in class. Thanks for the video lesson this helped a lot.

    Very interesting video. As a quick question, what would be your advice for designing a 5-6 minute demo self-introduction to a class of young students who don't speak English? I have been working on it for a few days, but it is proving more difficult than I originally thought, as I don't have access to any materials.

    • @etacude
      @etacude  4 роки тому +28

      Often teacher overthink and overplan lessons... 5 min is very quick. Do a quick intro, ask them some basic questions to show how it is done and ask them to think of questions they want to ask you. If you have time you can let them practice with a partner.
      Remember, you are the focus, they want to get to know you. So use yourself as the content. For example: Write down 5 facts of yourself on the board. Age, hobby, dislike, favorite food. Ask students what each one means. Then how to ask the question: How old are you? Then ask them to write down their 5 facts. Very easy and it'll eat up your 6 min.
      Don't worry, focus on the basics and it'll be fine! 😄

    These are good tips! Kind of what I had in mind all ready. I will start tomorrow with a class of 9 year olds and it can be hard when they have changed so many teachers to set new rules and routines. I’m a bit nervous because this class has a bad rep on the school for being unruly, but I will try my best to take them into fourth grade next year :)

    Excellent stuff! Self-evident truths of human interaction. An admirable balance of both supportive and effective. Students at any age do well with some structure, they (we) like it! I'm not a teacher formally at the moment, but this can make me a better *student*.... keeping these basics in mind as I potentially evaluate a teacher.
    Would love to hear feed-back on this: let's say you're not a classroom teacher but a *tutor* (in this case thinking about music - but what can be said universally about all subjects?) As a paid tutor, you have a complicated balance. If you turn to mush and just feed the student's ego (since he/she is paying you), then how do you honestly move them along in learning? You might hear this from them "Hey, I'm not making progress!" To you which you could say ... Yeah, you goof off the whole lesson and you don't practice... :-) How can you lay down the law when someone's paying you? Sure there's no simple answer. But I'd like to hear any thoughts.

    Hey there! I love all your tips and your videos are so valuable. I have taught for a year and will continue teaching the same groups of learners next year. Unfortunately, I was unaware of these management strategies in the beggining of the year and as such it has been a tough year for me with regards to asserting boundaries and expectations with my students. Is it too late to implement the strategies you have taught in this video to the same classes as of next year?
    Love to know your input. Xx

      Hi Bushra, thank you for your kind words and fantastic question. I think this is one of the most important questions on classroom management that most teachers want the answer for: How to regain control from a class that they are struggling with. I have spent a lot of time thinking about it and will make a video on the subject soon. You however are in the fortunate position to restart with the class next year. In that case you can readjust and start fresh... most teacher try to regain control halfway through the year. Good luck and I'll try to make a helpful video to address this big problem! 😁👍

    I agree that a teacher is the one who is the leader in class. I also agree that the teacher should be strict. When I was a student, strict teachers were always the ones who gave the most knowledge. Nowadays, a lot of teachers want to be more like a friend to their students and they want them to always have fun. You can be friendly and you can have fun, but I do believe that there must be boudaries between you and the students, and when people learn, it is necessary to have some activities that are not always "fun": reading, grammar, etc. So, it is a balance.

    Thank you for your tips, this really helped. I am a new teacher and will start in a school in Taipei in two weeks. I am super nervous as I have never taught in a classroom before (only virtually one on one). I will be teaching English and I am scared about some of their questions. Even though I am familiar with the grammar and how to explain things, there is things that I still need to look up or simply just don't know. What do you do when they ask you a question and you don't know the answer? I am scared they will eat me alive with questions and I will have a blank look on my face. HA! :)
    Thank you!

    • @etacude
      @etacude  3 роки тому +4

      I get this question a lot. Most teachers are afraid of looking incompetent in front of their students. The best way to deal with it is to say "I'm not so sure about that. Let me look it up to make sure and I'll let you know in the next class."
      Say it with a smile.
      Students don't need you to be perfect, but they need you to be a strong leader.
      Don't worry about what you don't know or can't do. Focus on what value you bring to them, how you can help them and what knowledge you can share.
      Have fun and be confident!
