I'm glad I found this. At my age (48) I thought it just wouldn't look right me being on a bmx. Now I know better. Thanks for this. Now I know I can crash into my midlife crisis n look good on the way to the hospital.
I’m 34 and just started riding again. Had my first crash and thought maybe I’m too old for this. Then I saw this video. Thank you bro. It’s people like you who help people like me not give up.
Thanks Jon, im 38 and getting back into BMX after 20 years! Ive got a 2010 Diamondback Nitrus24 and just starting to get the feel for the bike. So glad I came across this. Happy to see im not the only old dude out there!
Thanx for the video. I use to ride dirt jumps all the time until I had a bad accident when I was 18. I'm 38 now and ready to ride again. Going to ease into it. After seeing this video, it did motivate me even more. Here's to a 20yr break from BMX, LOL
This video inspired me a lot. I'm turning 30 soon, started riding at 18 (mostly street), practically stopped when 21 and maybe rode only a dozen times after that until this day. I was always afraid that I'll never be able to ride like I used to and never really tried to re-learn anything again. Thanks to your video, I picked up my old bike and hit indoor jumps this week. It feels great to feel alive again. Cheers!
I'm 34, soon to be 35 in a month... just bought a house and in the process of building dirt jumps now. Also building a mini in the basement to skate in the winter and rainy days... I don't know if it's juvenile or if I just never grew up!
Hey look, It's me! Just, around 15 years older, lol. I agree with everything you say in this video. I appreciate the fact that you say "Bring a shovel!" Im usually the guy leaving 4 or 5 shovels so other guys can use em. Its nice to know there are still guys like us out there!
I'm 54 and ride a wolverine. Mostly around town and bit of parkland in the city. Never could get into the bike your riding. Simply cause my old legs can't stand riding upright. Love a bike I can switch the seat down..or up when heading to the Timmies. Love the video Brother.
11 years in the future and this video is still worth watching Shovel etiquette /gauging speed watching / put hours in. I hope you’re still alive and enjoying yourself.
thank you very much for the inspiration you give me... After many years retired from BMX now I had doubts about whether I could jump again at my age (46). After see you I know that I can do it again :D Cheers and thank you again!!
I have spent countless hours working on those jumps but they were mainly built by a friend of mine. I have always liked working on jumps personally before I hit them. It gives me a little more confidence when hitting them for the first time.
Im 38, started 4 months ago. Love it, but it will be a long time before Im ready for that. Yesterday i did the sissyline for the first time, wow, so fun. At my local spot its 4 tabletops with steep landings, so pushed me right out of my comfort zone haha...Its true with the BMX, it makes a big difference even if you only do regular MTB trails.
Wished UA-cam and this video was around in 04'! Was the last time I was at a spot(9th Street) and it had been 4 years since riding any trails. As the saying goes "if you don't use it, you lose it" and at 9nth if you are lost, you can literally be in the sauce, your blood sauce!! Tried hitting one of the main sets which had a technical first set, nose cased the back of the knuckle, and landed on my face. Broke my nose and rashed up my mug. Saw Joe Rich and Chase Hawk ride the same set like a walk in the park but it was during a time I was just visiting. I digress, good tips, and now that I'm back on a bike again, I'm definitely taking these tips to heart(and not pay for my face again!)
Glad I found your channel.....I shall now subscribe....got into MTB at 29 and bought a MirraCO 20Forty at 31....moving to Denver next week for real biking....thanks for the inspiration
Great video. I just purchased my first bmx at 32 really stocked. I used to skateboard and recently decided to get back into it and I always wanted to get into bmx just couldn't afford it back then. Anyway I'm jumping in and can't wait to ride. The video was really helpful thanks.
Thanks man for making this video. I'm just now getting back into bmx and I'm bout to order either a 22" or 24". I also just got turned onto some trails near my house and have never ridin dirt jumps b4 so you just gave me allot of info. When i go I'll deff take a shovel. Thanks again.
That's awesome! It's always bugged me that there are kids out there learning tricks before they really learn basic bike skills like jumping. Mad props to you! I don't think you will ever see me doing anything like a tailwhip over a dirt jump. I'm pretty content with jumping from point a to point b without killing myself.
Don't like your bike but props for getting in to bmx/dirt riding at the age you did, not worrying about peeps judging and just enjoying the flow. All the best mate.
Thanks for posting this vid as it is a bit inspiring to me. I got back into riding last summer and was 39 as well at the time. Looking to take it slow as well but would love to start hitting some dirt jumps here in Boulder at Valmont park once I am ready. Cheers!
I now ride on 24" mtb with rigid fork, it's awesome! Similar to 24" bmx (In past, ride on 20" bmx - too small, 5 years, mtb dirt 26" - too big and i hasn't enough control bike with fork with suspension - 2 year) My height 187 centimeters, ride park/dirt
Holy cow! Cool! I'm 42 and just started hitting the Jump track up here in Auburn CA(ARD). It's been there for years....they just recently dozed the whole place! Almost brought tears to my eyes. Sucks big time! Just bought a DJ & a 24" BMX and was planning spending a lot of time there this summer. Now, as far as I know, the only other place is Cummings Park in Folsom, but you have to pay and a lot of kids are there. Trying to find a new line some where in Folsom ......any one?
Awesome... Am 40 and MTB loads; local trails are progressing and want to work on airtime. Just ordered my 1st 24 inch BMX; your vid has spurred me on. Only problem I have i there don't seem to be that many dirt jump trails in the uk... mostly pump tracks. I guess I could build one!
I'm 54 and started riding trials bikes last year. I'm aiming to nail dirt jumping this year. All I can say about ageing is don't fear it, keep very active (no, golf is not active!!!), get waaaay out of breath regularly, do yoga, stretch after every day playing and take warming up seriously. Act your shoe size....
i like it when people never give up on sports, even when they get older. don't know if you have kids, but if you have you must be one of the most awesome dads alive! btw, ever heard of jamie bestwick? 1 of the best bmxer is also 40+, age doesn't matter all that much
Like Jonfaurebmx said: go with a sunday model-c, I have one and it is awesome and everyone of my friends who said it looked uncomfortable and stupid to ride rode it and said they loved it haha
yeah, I use a 26" mountain bike (front suspension only) for jumps. it's actually alot easier for learning, because if you land a bit hard you won't crack your wrists or bend your forks/rims.
Hello. There is no standard for Dirt Jump bikes. But if you are talking about 26" Dirt Jumpers the frames are measured by the top tube length. With the average being around 22.5 inches. Or what we call Plus Size BMX bikes. Cheers
I'm turning 43, been snowbaordin n wake boarding for 15 years....now burnt out. Started dirt jumping about 3yrs ago. They plowed our local jump track...so went to Woodward Tahoe to practice 360's into foam...to fast track my progress, jumps are bigger than trail jumps.... got a couple around but not consistent enough. Not as easy as I thought, even w/all my years spinin on snow/wake....
good video man, i use to race bmx till i was 13, i love ridng trails with mates and diging are own such good fun, skateys and street are good when to just get hurt alot more XD im only 17, make the most of my riding days:)
mtbs work fine for dirt jumps. they actually help out when you are learning, the suspension takes most of the shock from the landing out. on a bmx if you land hard, you can stuff your wrists up
If you use a similar technique to the bunny hop it will help you boost higher on the jump. I would recommend though, that you not use this technique at first until you get more comfortable leaving the ground. Just relax and let your speed carry you over the jump at first.
Nice Stuff , maybe this encourage some ex racers to join some trail. i've just started one year ago and started having so much fun, .. keep doing some videos like this! =)
yeah i few of my mates i ride with gave me tips on my speed which got me over the first jump and then had enough speed to just roll n jump the next one
If I'm going to be hitting something new that I haven't done before, I'll spend some time watching other riders hit it and asking questions. Some jumps are easy to over jump and some you need to get as much speed as possible to clear. I want to know these things before I hit it. You can also follow other riders through the first time. Hope this helps and good luck!
Only tip is dont be scared! get all the speed yu can and make sure no matter what your front tire is over the landing. Leave the track knowing yu did better each day!
^See answer to first question. Also, if you don't make the landing: If your front wheel only is going to make it, stiffen up, straighten your legs and lean back slightly. If you do this, you should be able to roll out of it or not crash to hard. If you lean forward when this happens, you will go over the bars and most likely hit the ground pretty hard. If both wheels aren't going to make it, Bail! Push your bike down and hop over your bars so at least your body makes the landing.
Awesome vid, thanks. Us old guys need this level of detailed help... wiping out sux. Do you grab the brake midair to turn nose down, or are you just pushing bars down? I’m finding my new 24” cruiser handles a lot bigger than my muscle memory is used to (from riding street on a 20” in the 90s!)
so i started biking about a year ago and i mostly do dh/freeriding but i havent really ever looked at tutorials more or less just smashed through sections and would walk back to them to teach myself how to go through them but i have never been able to get the guts to hit any jumps. i have my brothers bmx bike in the garage and was wondering if taking that out would help me learn how to pump and jump better than on my mtb.
I'm glad I found this. At my age (48) I thought it just wouldn't look right me being on a bmx. Now I know better. Thanks for this. Now I know I can crash into my midlife crisis n look good on the way to the hospital.
How is it going man?
@@Croccolucho i think he's dead from dirt jumping
I’m 34 and just started riding again. Had my first crash and thought maybe I’m too old for this. Then I saw this video. Thank you bro. It’s people like you who help people like me not give up.
yes thx bro.i'm 50 and i just got back on a bmx bike and man i'm glad i did i love riding my age is 50 but my spirit and body stayed at 25 lol
😎
I don't care how people judge me for riding at 38. I've lived enough to know you have to do what makes you happy in life!
Perfect example of never to old to learn, nice jon
Man you made my day. I startet with 45 and was thinking i might be crazy 😁 i am happy to see people like you
Thanks Jon, im 38 and getting back into BMX after 20 years! Ive got a 2010 Diamondback Nitrus24 and just starting to get the feel for the bike. So glad I came across this. Happy to see im not the only old dude out there!
This video is so old but so good!
I am watching this video on 28 May 2022. Today is my birthday. I first started riding when I was 17 yo. And I still ride
Thanx for the video. I use to ride dirt jumps all the time until I had a bad accident when I was 18. I'm 38 now and ready to ride again. Going to ease into it. After seeing this video, it did motivate me even more. Here's to a 20yr break from BMX, LOL

that is the most relatable video I've seen. 33 years old. i felt so juvenile digging trails and jumps. i can come clean now! thank you so much!
I'm 34, soon to be 35 in a month... just bought a house and in the process of building dirt jumps now. Also building a mini in the basement to skate in the winter and rainy days... I don't know if it's juvenile or if I just never grew up!
I'm 36 now and always in woods building/shaping jumps. Do what makes you happy 👍
Bro, I'm also staring bmx at 38, thanks for the inspiration!
Hey look, It's me! Just, around 15 years older, lol. I agree with everything you say in this video. I appreciate the fact that you say "Bring a shovel!" Im usually the guy leaving 4 or 5 shovels so other guys can use em. Its nice to know there are still guys like us out there!
Word. Thanks for the video. I just turned 35 and bought a Model C, first BMX I've been on in 20 years. Good to know I'm not too old to shred again :)
I'm 54 and ride a wolverine. Mostly around town and bit of parkland in the city. Never could get into the bike your riding. Simply cause my old legs can't stand riding upright. Love a bike I can switch the seat down..or up when heading to the Timmies. Love the video Brother.
11 years in the future and this video is still worth watching
Shovel etiquette /gauging speed watching / put hours in. I hope you’re still alive and enjoying yourself.
Don't you love the freewheel sound ,while hitting rythems.
Thanks heaps mate! I'm pushing 40 and getting back into riding (mid life crisis hahah). I love how much you're killing it! Balls of steel! Cheers.
thank you very much for the inspiration you give me... After many years retired from BMX now I had doubts about whether I could jump again at my age (46).

great to see! just bought my first bmx since i was a teenager, now 34. Going to practice first before visiting any trails :)
You are my hero man!...iam 38 and got my first DirtJumper... I hope one day I can hit the gaps like you bro.. Respect@

Finally! a proper jump tutorial!
When i started learning how to ride and jump and stuff this would have been awesome!
Great video. I just purchased my first bmx at 32 really stocked. I used to skateboard and recently decided to get back into it and I always wanted to get into bmx just couldn't afford it back then. Anyway I'm jumping in and can't wait to ride. The video was really helpful thanks.

this guy might be my new hero
Good stuff man! Super motivating for us older dudes.
I'm 38 & just got my first BMX, I love my mid-life crisis!
The bike Jon rides is a Sunday Bikes Wave-C. They can be purchased from your local Sunday! dealer.

Almost 41 watching this, nearly completed my custom gt 24…now what to do with this beast-
Then this video comes across my feed
I’m having a hard time deciding between the Sunday model c, or the colony eclipse 24”?!?!?
But I definitely want a 22, or 24”.
Can't decide between stolen spade 22", we the people atlas 24" or 26" Gt La Bomba
You sir, What a hero!
very good information and honest approach, keep it up¡
Respect! 47 and riding! Fantastic!
Good job dude ! 47 (and no beer belly), respect. Downhill myself ,so I to insanely stupid , @ 48...
You're never too old to BMX. Ever.
Great video, bro! Great footage too!
Respect man!!!
You have a sick backyard.
Model c vs stln saint, I'm on a budget and will upgrade late, but want something for skateparks and trails
I would go with the Sunday Model-C For sure!!!
and I felt old starting BMX at 30!!
Sorry, it doesn't look like they are currently available. I checked the Sunday Bikes website store and they don't have them.
I got mine directly from Sunday Bikes.
its has gotten better...but mostly i keep my legs pretty straight. i know bad habit
thx
where are those trails, they look really clean and flowy
focus on your front wheel hitting the landing first or at the same time just keep focused on ur front.
Nice video brother. repn for us older dudes!!!
that t-shirt, i love it
so i started biking about a year ago and i mostly do dh/freeriding but i havent really ever looked at tutorials more or less just smashed through sections and would walk back to them to teach myself how to go through them but i have never been able to get the guts to hit any jumps. i have my brothers bmx bike in the garage and was wondering if taking that out would help me learn how to pump and jump better than on my mtb.
Nice shovel.
