I graduated from High School in 1973.......and I asked my parents for this album for my graduation present. No luggage, just YESSONGS. I got my wish....and still listen to it to this day.
We graduated same year!I think one of the first things I did with my friends was go into Boston to see the movie version on the big screen. Amazing experience!
I graduated in '77, and had to paint many houses and fences in the summer of '75 to buy this and guitar strings! The strings were worn quickly, the album is still here to this day worn but still playing! Peace.
That bass and guitar arrangement for 3.5 minutes right before the drum solo is about the finest thing I ve ever heard in music. Chris and Steve were locked in and driven to excellence.
In my opinion this one of the rare great live albums! This and Chicago at Carnegie Hall were both massive! I had to work summers to buy both, and still have them both. Yessongs is the closest I can come to reliving the 4 times I saw them in the seventies! Compared to modern live recordings this holds up very well. Peace & Love, more, more, more!
I was 15 in 1971 when I first saw YES Live with Bill performing Perceptual Change which instantly converted me into a YES disciple. The memory carries on inside my mind and heart. I am glad that you recognize what 70s YES, specifically, gave to us. There was a style in which each member's instrumentation intersected, intertwined and interconnected like no other incarnation. They definitely were touched by an invisible force which you could actually 'feel' when experiencing them LIVE. Their interactive energies and aura were so organic, visceral and palpable on stage as if the music flowed with a life all it's own. (especially if you were Tripping like me during every concert between 72-79 (LOL! total out-of-body) and even in later decades when the lineup would reunite with Alan it was pure magic.
Excellent version. Quite close to the original with Rick using mostly organ as Tony did. Guitar work is sublime, Chris thuds and soars, and drums so good. Jon in God mode. ❤
BTW at the time YES's Live performances had already gained high praises and footage of bands were still extremely rare, so for new audiences to have this Yessongs, triple album and even the low tech film release was a big deal then. For me having already seen them twice, it was incredible!
Have to buy this. Never heard this version. Heard one other song from this album, and the sound is excellent. I knew they were great live, I saw them 2 times around 2000 (Anderson, Squire, White, Howe, Wakeman) - and they really were amazing live.
One of their most inventive progressive masterpieces with Bruford leading the way!Iwas only 12 when my brother purchased this album and changed my musical taste forever as I played this triple album over and over again of course usually when my brother was at college!👍🏻☮️
The Greatest Live Album of ALL TIME, HANDS DOWN! My Favorite Album from my Favorite Band, I never missed a Show, The Spectrum, & JFK STADIUM Philadelphia 🎉🎉🎉
Been waiting a long time for this one! One of my all-time favorite live Yes tracks (and never reacted to by any other youtuber, as far as I know). Steve's playing here is epic-tier. Just superb. The way he can play an electric guitar - live! - with such delicacy, nuance and precision is nothing short of astounding. The entire band is in top form as they navigate the crests and valleys of this dynamic piece. The extended solos and Rick's subtle but impactful organ playing really propel this track and elevate it above the original studio recording, which is quite a feat.
Yeah, just amazing they could do this back in 1972!?! What a wonderful time to have lived. I was afraid, going to my first YES concert, that I was going to be disappointed. It just seemed impossible to perform BETTER on stage than studio...NOPE. Anytime YES can stretch a song out, the better. 😉
I bought this album in July of '73 (a couple of months after it was released) - my first Yes album purchased. I was blown away, it was Yes in one album (almost). The thing that stood out for me the most was Steve Howe's guitar playing. I thought, why does his playing sound so good and why was no-one else doing anything like this? So intricate, flawless and new. What a sound. And the rest of the band all performing at the top of their game.
Noice. Can you imagine what happened when, at age 16, I randomly picked up this album that my older sister had bought, and played it. I was overcome with the structure, skill and virtuosity of the band. So I approached the music in the reverse of what I generally did - live version first. Man, I played all the records down to the nub - even now I know every note, drum hit and bass run; boy, I just ate it up. And there you have the framework of musical appreciation and the very high bar that I ran with all my life. Yes, Bill Bruford IS the best [and I've followed a few].
I drove home in my first car from an Asia gig listening to Yessongs at very high volume (the gig had been loud) and stayed in the car listening to the end when I got home. Being young and stupid, it never occurred to me that the neighbours were all being treated to Yes at their best way past midnight. Next morning I found out they were not all Yes fans! I still listen to it, but usually on headphones now. They were such a powerful band when they were all blasting off together like this.
This live version is so much better than the studio version. Similarly "The Fish" and especially "Yours is no Disgrace" are phenomenal. And, as one of your chat buddies said, check-out "Moby Dick" by Led Zeppelin from their amazing live album "The Song Remains the Same" is definitely a must listen to, with that powerhouse John Henry Bonham on skins. Another stupendous live album is "In Search of Space" by Hawkwind.
@@raymondregis6219 I love Sterling Hayden's portrayal of the character Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, in the film Dr Strangelove, is absolutely amazing!
"What a time" You are right Lee and I thankfully grew up in this Era with my older Brother in the scene and along with friends saw every great band we could for a dozen+ years from the 1970s-80s within a 4 hr ride from Boston, RI, CT & NYC it was Fantastic !!!! 👍🎶🎼✌
Yes my favourite band for nearly 50 years their output in the 1970's is genius. Live they were on fire . Visceral even. So exciting. This is the only track on the album with Bill Bruford. What a drummer arguably still my favourite drummer for his rhythmic choices and economy while still being virtuosic. Keep following the journey L33 it is a great one.
Yes, it was a great time to be alive! I had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times between 1977-1982. 5 amazing individual musicians who together were definitely greater than the sum of their parts! Yessongs and Second Out by Genesis are maybe the best live prog albums ever
If we could time travel I would go to one of these shows with you dude! And it would be my treat. For all the incredible talent and musicianship we got back then I don’t think any ticket was more than ten bucks! 😜
The most recent reissues of The Yes Album have a live version of this with the Yes Album lineup from the Yale Bowl in '71 and Bill's drum solo on that one is insane. In general I think as good as The Yes Album is a lot of that material got even better live.
There is a cover artist named David Kemp who did the bass on this live version. Even after all the years of listening to this, there are things that he reveals that are just amazing. Especially that segment in the middle when they go into three different time signatures. It just blows your mind!
Isn't it a damn shame that high fidelity digital recording hardware came along too late to capture all of this stuff. Ironic that back then we have great bands and OK recording equipment and today we have OK bands and great recording electronics. Fate can be cruel.
You can see it live: there's the video version of this too. I've got the DVD, but you can probably stream it somewhere. Saw this several times as a midnight movie in college, of course in an appropriate frame of mind! Also, Steve sings harmony as well as Chris, though Chris is usually more prominent. Also, Rick was a bit subdued on this since he didn't play on the original track, and Tony's playing was pretty low-key. Peace from SF
This was the album that got me into the band. I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the positivity in their music. Just got out of hospital tonight and this was my second video I watched... first one was A Saucerful of Secrets... thanks for all you do... btw my suggestion for Pink Floyd is One Of These Days from Pompeii... it is the best track for Nick Mason as he rocks it throughout... massively.

The live version from Yes At The House Of Blues is really good too with more modern recording techniques. I still have my original vinyl copy of YESSHOWS and will never part with it.
L33: Watching you listen attentively to Bill's drum solo was freaking awesome. Drummers know what's involved in what they're hearing. Others might tune out during drum solos, we tune in. And you are correct: this song is one where they really go all out live, developing what was already a great arrangement. That middle section reprising just before the solo with Bill and Chris going wild in sync while Steve power washes the jam with color sounds like The Tasmanian Devil's parents gave him ninja throwing stars for Christmas and sent him to play at the hospital's hemophiliac ward. To hear unrestrained exuberant going for it wildness not go off the rails - the mind reels, the fist pumps, the heart soars in joy.
It's beautiful! They added so much life to the sound that was already alive. And bill at the end was absolute fire! That's why he's my favorite drummer I've found on here 😁😁 just absolute dominant drumming. This whole band is so good here 😩
Thanks bro for another great reaction vid. And Yes, nothing beats classic Yes! So yeah, glad to come back home :D Despite requesting Endless Dream as a followup of Machine Messiah (just to explore a bit more of that path) , 70's Yes remains the golden era without a doubt. My christmas present for you might just be a full album request of the 1973 Roosevelt Stadium Concert in New York. lol Not as crystal clear as yessongs but definately the most immersive yes live experience out there. I think this one gets my vote for most "Most Improved Over the Studio Version". This one in particular is an insane study in dynamics and ebb and flow, but all the songs from The Yes Album are kicked into an entirely different gear with these live versions. Sadly on later tours (the 90's and 00's) their attempts to revive "Perpetual Change" fell flat, mainly because Steve Howe insisted on going back to the album's stately tempo and more mellow vibe. The bite and looseness of this performance was lightning in a bottle, never to be seen again.
One of my favorite tracks they are so tight and you can capture the magic of YES especially around the 11minute part just amazing. Oh PS the video is a different concert so its to me not as great.
You really need to check out something from Big Generator. Please! Either title track, or my favorite Shoot High Aim Low. At about 2:50 in on that song I get goosebumps every time. ☮️❤️
@@L33Reacts Starship Trooper was the best track on Yessongs Alan played on. Rick's Moog solo in particular rips. Best version of that song is on Keys to Ascension (Rick and Steve solo back and forth).
Yes, you should stay away from the Yessongs videos, the sound recordings, (and the video itself) on the film/video is not as good as the album. I have literally seen Yes live over 50 times, I've seen every lineup. Genius musicians, I believe the best of all time, who took all their album recordings to another level when they played them live. It's great watching you go on your Yes journey, you really get it. Yes biggest prog band
You really need to check out something from Big Generator. Please! Either title track, or my favorite Shoot High Aim Low. At about 2:50 in on that song I get goosebumps every time. ☮️❤️
Final Eyes.👍😎
@@jeffschielka7845 one of the most beautiful songs
@@nancymjohnson Great song!😎
I thought for 50 years this was Alan White on drums, but the comments say Bill Bruford.. 🥸
He is the drummer on 2 songs. This one and long distance runaround/the fish. Alan does the rest.
You should do a reaction to "Opening Sequence/Siberian Khatru" and also "Your Move/(I've Seen) All Good People."

Ok one track for Bill 😁
You had better do "Your's is no Disgrace" 😜
And the album version not The Yessongs movie.
Don't forget Rick on keys of allsorts mostly Mellotron
Best tracks on Yessongs are the ones Bill played on.
Yeah those are the only ones I've done other then starship trooper lol
@@L33Reacts Starship Trooper was the best track on Yessongs Alan played on. Rick's Moog solo in particular rips. Best version of that song is on Keys to Ascension (Rick and Steve solo back and forth).
Rick’s solo is the best solo I have ever seen and heard period
Bruford at his best
Dude no kidding... that solo at the end was pure sex. Haha
@@L33Reacts yep. That's why he's my favorite drummer. He was smart to retire, before his skills started to decline. Very smart man.
Pre-KC Bruford. He only got better.
Exactly. He gets EVEN better which Is crazy 🤪
Looking forward to your Beatles reactions as well.
