I made it a point years ago to forego social media and cell phones. Nothing is more annoying to me than people who are so addicted to their cell phones that they have to be on them constantly. I truly feel sorry for people who have such pathetic lives that they have to be connected constantly. I truly believe there is something seriously lacking in a person's life who has to have that cell phone like another appendage. Solitude is a blessing. A constantly ringing cell phone, be it calls or texts, is a nightmare.

My husband has had internet since it came out. I didn't use a computer until 10 years ago and I've never owned a cell phone. My husband = computer programmer/IT aficionado. It used to drive me nuts to see my him sitting 24hrs a day in front of a computer/ laptop, Meanwhile I'd be doing housework, painting, yardwork, shopping, etc. 10yrs ago our son introduced me to You tube. I put on 20 lbs. I could not believe how easy it was for me to sit on my ass for hours and hours. My entire life I've never been a couch potato. Huge time suck. I'm aware of it and have made adjustments. The first step in recovery process is admitting you have a problem.

Why stage anything? Weather will always affect gardening. OWN IT! "Camera ready"? There should always be a plan B and maybe C. One that doesn't require you to stress (and spend money). Reschedule. This is not meant to be mean. I'm glad that see that you have issues JUST LIKE the rest of us. Everything in gardening is a risk. This is an opportunity to educate us and jump on it! You are doing great!

I agree with you, Brian. Social media can be a huge time-suck/brain-drain, especially for ADHD peeps. I ignore most of it, too. Regarding the beetles and pill bugs, have you tried dusting diatomaceous earth around the base of your strawberries and cucumbers? We started using it around ours, as well as other seedlings, and it made an immediate difference. We use Sluggo for the snalils and slugs. And showing the dead gopher is fine with me and the hubby. Keep up the good work and have a great day! ☺️

You could let the cilantro flower and seed and collect the coriander seeds. And save some to sow next year. That could be part of the story of gardening. I do that with parsley all the time and had a ton of parsley this year. The pollinators love the tiny flowers and I'm pretty sure cilantro is much the same? I love your sweet animals and all the info you do selflessly offer. Thank you!!!!

Brian, I understand getting everything camera-ready as much as possible. Here are a few suggestions so it's not so overwhelming. 1) Make a list of what you need completed 2) Recruit your small group/life group to do the grunt work and specific things you need done that you don't have to do (like mulch) 3) Frees you up to do what only you can do 4) Have it be a work day or two and feed them lunch or dinner. Group projects make it doable and they would be happy to help. Many hands make a job easier.

Thank you for making me smile today Brian. I needed that. I personally think because of all the social media platforms, people don’t sit and visit, or go outside and be productive, or sit outside and just watch the sunset, because they’re on their phones, I just feel like they’re missing “real” life, “real” interactions with their own family, their neighbors, their world. I used to be a UA-camr and Instagram/TikTok content creator for years, so I was ALWAYS on social media and on my phone. In 2022, I felt a call from God to release the social media from my life, and it was such a relief! I was afraid to do it at first, because I thought I wouldn't have a life without it, but it was so freeing. Since then, I've taken on gardening and baking (way more productive hobbies). Now, that I don't use Instagram or Tiktok, I'm finding myself mainly watching UA-cam videos which are far more educational. I'm so glad I got off of social media. (P. S. - I usually cringe at seeing dead animals, and I was n't expecting you to show the dead gopher, BUT it actually wasn't too bad seeing the gopher. It wasn't up close nor was it gory.)

I applaud your awareness of social media and making changes that fit with your intentions. Regarding the gophers, thanks for showing a bit of gopher so we understand how that type of trap works. And I think you’ll find HUGE success with burying the dead gopher in the hole. About 20 years ago, we felt like we were playing whack a mole with one gopher after another until we finally buried it in the tunnel rather than putting it in the trash. This was my mom’s suggestion. It totally ended the goober issue at that house. We used that technique at our next home and it worked again.

Concerning your social media vacation. Around 2005 a class I was taking required that we go off the media for a week. At that time it meant tv, radio, newspaper and so on. Very quickly it became apparent to me that much of my usage was mindless time expenditure. I suspect that Noah's teacher was trying to get that across to the students. I wonder how many students actually completed the assignment and how many claimed to go off their social media.

actually, the class should be about reality as well. our weather just cooled this week but as our climate destabilizes, we are going to see more of this so everyone needs to plan for it. one of the problems, especially for new gardeners, is expectations. so many people start gardening for a season or two then get discouraged because their expectations were not met. like all things, it takes time to get experience and get in the flow. as for social media, i got rid of them all shortly after i tried them when they began. i only have youtube and that is because it is about learning for me. love the animals 😍

Until you get rid of the snails and other things eating your strawberries, here's a suggestion, I bag my strawberries with those bags for seed starting. They're like a cloth bag. I put a clip on the top of the stem to keep the critters out. So far it has worked.
That is a mole tunneling under the surface of the soil. We have them here in Florida.
I also don't do social media, I have enough problems of my own, I don't need to be reading about everyone else and their problems. I do have my y tube videos that I watch. I can watch or not watch certain videos. Thanks for sharing your farm animals with us. They are very entertaining.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Good for you, Brian, for mastering your contact with social media instead of letting it master you. Btw, I'm also frustrated with all the gray, cool weather we've been having. No problem with seeing the dead gopher, either. Glad you caught the sucker!

I’m with you!!! Going off social media is true self-care!!! The whole thing is designed to be negative and addictive, even though some of the stuff seems harmless enough on the surface. Congratulations!!!
Regarding filming for the class, try to stay calm and just do your best, it’s going to turn out in a wonderful way, like all the other things that you do!!! Really appreciate everything you share Brian, all your soulful (and educational!) gardening and life stuff! Love it!!!

Brian, do you know about using little wedding favour, gauze bags on your tree fruits as they are ripening? The bags come with a ribbon to tie around the fruit. Use on strawberries too to keep all sorts of critters from going after your”stuff just when you think you’ll go get some to eat. Your cottage and English Flower garden are beautiful. Make me quite nostalgic for my old country!

Love Bella, Daisy and the lambs!!! 😍
I got off of social media over a year ago (and here I am commenting on your TouTube channel 😂). No social media is EXTREMELY freeing!!! I did set up, recently, a FB account for only my groups (chickens, canning, freeze drying, etc). I’m hardly on at all but it’s nice to have that resource if you need help.
Your video will be absolutely fine for School of Traditional Skills ! Remember, it’s “real life” and the weather does its own thing! I live at 6,300’ in Western Colorado. We had a pretty hard freeze just last week, which isn’t typical. I’m a member of School of Traditional Skills and look forward to your class.
A tip about freeze drying your cilantro………move your warming tray temp down to 90 degrees and don’t pre-freeze your herbs. They come out almost the same color they were when you put them in (no browning) and the taste is phenomenal!!!

I am right there with you on the social media on the phone. I just don't do it. And even on my computer I try to limit my FB time - it can be a real black hole for me. You will be amazing for your class, so try not to stress too much over how it looks. You are such a wonderful "garden teacher " that your students will be more interested in what you're saying than in, if your garden is filled in more. You have taught me more in the last couple of years than anyone else on UA-cam put together! I understand the social media thing. I canceled my cable tv almost 2yrs ago and only watch UA-cam videos on my tablet or read. I don't miss tv or the news which was so stressful. What a waste of time fb, Instagram and Pinterest can be! I'd rather be gardening or learning about gardening.
Loved seeing Daisy, Bella and boys! The cutie pie in wheelbarrow eating made me lol! 😂😂😅

I have to stay off Facebook and Instagram for the most part. I sign on once or twice a month to check in on friends and family but the negativity just eats me up. Even on UA-cam I avoid reading comments. So many people delight in criticizing and stirring up trouble. My sister lives on social media so she lets me know if I’m missing something important. 😉
As always sending love and hugs to you and your sweet family. ❤️🤗❤️🌹

Interesting facts about avocados. Avocados DO NOT RIPEN on the tree. They only reach maturation once they are cut off from the tree !
Best options for small immature trees - pick off all the flowers - so they concentrate on further growth - and later fruiting.

Daisy is just too cute, and I think she has you wrapped around her little finger/hoof. Had to laugh at the little stinker in the cart full of munchies. Glad you’re getting the gophers under control. Nothing as irritating as having hard garden work undone by demonic quadrupeds.

I think you did the right thing getting off social media. There are positive aspects to it, but I think it is more bad than good. I was on FB for about a month 8 or 9 years ago. Saw it as a huge waste of time, (for me), and deleted it. I will admit I watch too much YT though.
I feel your class will be a big success. Your knowledge and presentation style is awesome. (my garden is proof of that) And you can highlight the reality of things outside of your control, i.e. weather. You can turn the lack of 'perfection' into a positive. We all have to deal with something we didn't plan on.

First... your garden is absolutely beautiful! Those flowers are stunning (nasturtium?)! Have you tried zoning your spaces by days of the week? It doesn't take care of the everyday stuff like watering and pest control... but it gives you a focus area for the day. I give myself Saturdays off to rest. But I have Seedling Sundays (which is all my potted and shed areas), Raised bed Mondays, Perimeter Tuesday, Wild Space Wednesdays, Orchard Thursday, Food forest Fridays. It's really helped me with the perfectionist paralysis. I do it inside for household cleaning too.

I truly feel. Your frustration on the pest taking the strawberries. I had squirrels get into my tower, that’s like yours and they killed all my strawberries dug them out so now it’s too late to get new one so next year I’m going to have to go and buy all new plants and start over, luckily I’m growing in containers because my entire yard is infested with gopher moles whatever the heck they’re called. I got those hills everywhere my yard is destroyed. Also it’s so hot here I’ve had to already put up my shade cloth.

We enjoy real relationships by spending time together rather than reading someone's description of what they are doing. We also have found time to get things done and are more connected to our family. What a Godsend!

Re: gophers. We had 3 acres and a big barn and a horse and chickens and dogs. They tore down a long line if really old trees across the street and when they did we were suddenly over run with big rats. We tried everything;d-con, sticky traps, big snap traps, everything. Walked into the barn one night and saw 16 just sitting in the rafters watching us. If we saw 16, there were probably 60 more hiding. And then a little yellow female cat came to live with us. She could come in the house whenever she wanted but she preferred outside. She walked into that barn and started killing rats. In less than a month she had killed every rat and mouse and then she started on the gophers out in the pasture. Once she took care of those, she went next door into the acres of almond orchard and killed their gophers. She was a killing machine and she didn’t cost us a dime. Moral of this story. Get some cats. Rescue a female and spay her-get a short haired cat. Also that cat woukd go out and sleep with our chickens. She never bothered them. Now I can’t swear she wouldn’t catch and eat a baby chick, but if they had a good mom, she would never have faced off with an angry hen.

It's hard watching your babies grow up isn't it? Sigh, new life experiences :O) So neat Daisy's following you around, hearing her bellowing, the sheep baaing (How do you spell that anyway?) Boy, you sure have a lot of crop-eating critters. I get annoyed with just our squirrels and occasional skunks, a few earwigs......spoilt? We're across Lake Huron from Tawas City, Michigan - would love to be able to share some of our unseasonable heat - 77F w/humidex 86F this afternoon, and next couple of days, 86/93humidex and 84/97humidex. Dead gopher - you got the li'le sucker!! .....and hey what's with the teaser? :) You have a good day as well 🇨🇦

Here in the SF Bay Area, we have had a mostly grey May heading into June gloom and 45-49* nights and barely 70* after three days of upper 70’s. Stalled most of the veggies but the first two tiny zucchini needed hand pollinating today. It is an area that traps heat better than the others areas. All are in containers just bc of the orientation of the house has sun in the front rather than the backyard. All we can do is improvise around the vagaries of the weather…
