I saw them twice. .When Rick brought out the five neck everyone went crazy.Nothing like it before! He said it weighs over 40 lbs.The best show I’ve ever seen!!!!
I've seen these guys a bunch of times and there's no mics turned down or non-tuned guitars. Rick Neilsen sings when he wants, that's just how it is. They have fun. No one notice the 8-string bass? That's why it sounds like 2 guitars and a bass.
How incredible!! My dream is to meet them one day! I had fallen in love with their music since I was at least 17 years old. I remember starting to get into them in my late high school years. I am 29 years old! I have only seen Cheaptrick once back in 2013 and I plan on seeing them again come this August! Hopefully making it a second time seeing these guys play!
A lot of those bands cite Cheap Trick as an influence, especially Smashing Pumpkins(makes sense given the Chicago thing). The grunge foundation is basically The Pixies and The Replacements(thats oversimplifying, i know), both of whom were clearly influenced by 70s power pop bands like Cheap Trick
i saw these guys at the Mid South fair in Memphis, TN. 1985, I think. He played 19 different guitars. The 5 necker was the last. Blew me away. Necks down to knees. LOL
OMG!!!! Thank you for posting this! I was there! It seems like yesterday watching this. They were awesome, it is just you use to have to sit so far away from the stage you really couldn't see. Now it's like a front row seat to a 20 year old concert! Too cool!
I was here also!! I went to 4 concerts that year at the livestock show. Cheap Trick, Alabama, George Strait and one other one. The rotating stage was several country videos from that year. The dome did stink from sound.
That is one heavy ass guitar. When I got the honor of working 2 Cheap Trick shows the second show I was the stand in between Rick's guitar tech and Rick. The tech would hand me the guitars and I would hand them to Rick as he handed a guitar back to me. When he handed me that 5 string I almost fell forward
Yep...this song is always worth the price of admission to a Cheap Trick concert...definitely one of the 10 Best "Take No Prisoners" Rock N' Roll songs of all time...
@@ELEKTROSKANSEN You didn’t ask me, BUT…the albums and tours with the original four members, the absolute best. America’s Beatles (in many people’s opinions). When Tom Petersson left in the ‘80s, as silly as it might sound it was a bit like when Ace and Peter left KISS. There was something about those original four personalities that was magical. Since Petersson rejoined they’ve put out some amazing music (continuing even today). But with Bun E out of the picture and even Rick missing shows here and there, I’m starting to wonder if maybe it’s time for them to hang it up. Pains me to say it.
Cheap Trick's rise and fall were meteoric in both directions. The live Budokan album propelled them into the stratosphere in 1978. So, 1978-1979 were their peak years. Then, for some reason in 1980 they started falling badly. I was at the summer blowout concert in the summer of 1980. Cheap Trick was the headline, but there was a hot new band called Journey that played before them. The final 3 bands were Black Sabbath (not with Ozzy), Journey, and the finale, Cheap Trick. When the summer blowout was planned, Cheap Trick was bigger than Journey. But by the time the actual concert came around Journey was more popular. I remember many people leaving the LA Coliseum after Journey. It was a long day ... I think the lineup was something like: Babys, Russia, Molley Hatchet, Black Sabbath, Journey, Cheap Trick. (Maybe Ambrosia was there, too, I can't recall.) By 1984, they were playing at places like MIT.
I always felt the 1980's music started in 1978 with the Cars ushering in the New Wave. Techno was also coming in. There was even techno funk like Funkytown by Lipps Inc and Pop Muzik by M, hitting the airwaves. Slick rock like Toto, too. Music was turning "80's". In a good way, Cheap Trick stayed true to their ways, but that meant waiting a long time to resurface again.
@@joey325 MTV was pushing the tastes to other bands. They did this to hard rock & Hair bands were replaced w/Grunge. Then MTV rolled out RAP & shoved most everything aside to promote that.
@kikiphallin The bottom one is fretless. Look closely. And the bass is a 12 string bass, again, look closely. 3, 3, 3, and 3 - I've actually played one once, but it was white, and had a strat shape body. Intresting sound, though. Just some useless knowledge I thought I would pass along.
@raywagman Rick let me hold one of his five-neck guitars a couple of years ago. It weighed 57 pounds! I have no idea how he can run around with that thing- let alone play it! Amazing!
@bibliac- Correction: 36 'always tuned' strings. 1st neck is a 12-string, the rest are 6 string guitars. In one of the interviews, CT guitar technician Dave said that although he hates the 5-neck monster but just the same, he does his job with a smile (hehe, doing 36 strings? I could imagine!) BTW, the CT's 5-neck guitar is the only one existing in the world. Afterall, Rick Nielsen is one helluva guitar collector.
Girl, I'm a 53 yr old woman who is going to take singing lessons and get back into being in musicals!!! It's never too early or late to live the DREAMMMM!!!!!! ROCK ON, GIRL!!!!!
@sueintexas It was indeed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. I was there, and remember the background and the rotating stage. Sounded horrible in the Dome, as pretty much everything did....crazy double vocal effects on this too. Sounds like he;s singing to a recording of himself.
I remember seeing Cheap trick when they were first starting out in the Chaudierre,Hull, Quebec. Great band. Had the place rocking. Guitarist just keeps getting bigger and better. Are they still alive and performing?
This must have been at the Houston Rodeo,,,,though the stage always revolves slowly...it's a strange place to see a show but thats how they do it in Houston ,,,,
@asianibanez ..yah if u watched the whole video you would have noticed.. even if you watched until 1:30 you would have seen that he's playing the second neck from the bottom..
One of them is actually a 12 string. By the way you know there is a button that turns off capital letters in case you thought that's just the way it is.
thatsnotreal94, there *are* strings on the bottom neck (visible around 0:15 , when Rick strikes the first chord --- watch for the shimmer as he moves back), but no fret-markers, and (get this!) no *frets* ! You could really get some trippy sounds with that, like a "six-string violin". I've never seen a clip where he plays that neck, but, if he did, maybe he'd "pull a Jimmy Page" and play it with a violin-bow.
Then we're cool, hey I'm just sayin a lot of greats played the Astrodome. I consider SRV to be the greatest Texas musician to ever play there but that's my opinion. And I'll respect your opinion too, sorry about the trolling comment.
I saw Rick play this glorious guitar in 1978 at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, LA!
The fashion of the late 80's and early 90's is still really cool. The leather...the boots...the hair...and the music is timeless too! ...great stuff!
I saw them twice. .When Rick brought out the five neck everyone went crazy.Nothing like it before! He said it weighs over 40 lbs.The best show I’ve ever seen!!!!

That isn’t an 8 string bass. It’s a 12 string bass.
I was at this concert. Two girlfriends and I got to meet the band and rode around Houston in their limo with them.
How incredible!! My dream is to meet them one day! I had fallen in love with their music since I was at least 17 years old. I remember starting to get into them in my late high school years. No you didn’t
As long as we have Cheap Trick, we're all alright!
Three cheers for Bun E. Carlos!
Bun E. Carlos was ahead of his time as a drummer
This guys and Thin Lizzy are my favorite bands right now
Same here
Plus Mahogany Rush
Just saw them live an hour ago. They are still as good as.....
Cheap Trick was ahead of its time. They sound like the soon to be grunge bands of the 90s.
Agreed
A lot of those bands cite Cheap Trick as an influence, especially Smashing Pumpkins(makes sense given the Chicago thing). The grunge foundation is basically The Pixies and The Replacements(thats oversimplifying, i know), both of whom were clearly influenced by 70s power pop bands like Cheap Trick
Bun..... Coolest drummer ever.....
"This is rock and roll,it's not supposed to be good"(Tom Petty) One of the best bands ever,Cheap Trick.
this live version is SO GODDAMN GOOD! the energy, the tone, everything’s there. fw cheap trick they’re legends of power pop
i saw these guys at the Mid South fair in Memphis, TN. 1985, I think. He played 19 different guitars. The 5 necker was the last. Blew me away. Necks down to knees. LOL
That guitar looks very light and easy to play!!!
one inch of this blows the fuck outta the 90s to present

What an Amazing Guitar !!!!
Love this group, they rock, they're awesome!
Saw 'em last summer and they still put on a hell of a show.
HOLY MOLEY! that is one Monster Guitar!

What a wonderful luxury to have worked with Cheaptrick! ❤️

This song sounds better live, they all do a fantastic job and love Tom's smile.
Hahaha i have to acknowledge after all this years that Tom makes me all wet, abd im perfectly heterosexual !
i was there it was awesome
Not their very best era, but also not their worst. Bun E's such an amazing drummer, man. Nobody gives it that heavy heavy swing that he does.
I was never into Cheap Trick, so out of curiosity: which eras would you consider the best and the worst for them?

Fuck YEAH!!!!!! Fantastic, incredible version.
A great version of it.

Holy hell! I forgot they played the Houston Rodeo!
THAT GUITAR IS HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!
I was there ❤❤❤
I love his múltiple guitar
@sueintexas Yes, it was at the Livestock Show and Rodeo. The same stage that rotated was used for all of the performances there.
This guitar is super funny, especially if it bugs people
Now if he was a virtuoso playing all five necks it would bug me too

You posted this a while back and they are still touring in 2022. Great band
how can this be from 1989 when Rick is wearing a shirt that says 2000 on the back?
Inside the 00's it said -12 2000-12=1988 from when the tour was started . I had one from the Standing On The Edge tour that had 2000 -15
Great concert...I got some snatch that night in my van....
This must have been at the Houston Rodeo,,,,though the stage always revolves slowly...it's a strange place to see a show but thats how they do it in Houston ,,,,
You got it Damone!
If you look closely, it says "-11" in the 0's. They have been doing that for a while now. I got a pass that has "+5" from a few years back.
Today is 09-09-OO9. big whoop!
hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
Beast guitar
Woah... a five neck guitar... Rick Nielsen must have been an octopus in another life... :D
How long does it take to tune that guitar haha
@MichaelDio Because obviously he rocks so hard that he can warp time & space!
I LOVE the shirt at 05:01!!!!! I want it!!!!
Anybody know if this was a rodeo appearance. There wasn't many shows at the dome other then rodeo.
@asianibanez ..yah if u watched the whole video you would have noticed.. even if you watched until 1:30 you would have seen that he's playing the second neck from the bottom..
god cheap trick ROCKS

凄い! Cheap! Please once more come here Japan!!

OK! Please! Come to Japan!

bun e fuckin rocks!!!
Unessesary but incredible, this is

says 1989 but Rick is wearing a Cheap Trick 2000 t-shirt?
oh my god for how many years does that stage was used? it was the same they used in 1993 1994 and 1995 selena's concerts in the rodeos...
wow
Rick is a good guy.
Then we're cool, hey I'm just sayin a lot of greats played the Astrodome. I consider SRV to be the greatest Texas musician to ever play there but that's my opinion. And I'll respect your opinion too, sorry about the trolling comment.
@weneedhelp123 it's wireless technology
After years of wearing that 5-neck monstrosity Rick Nielsen now has a chiropractor on call.
Actually, if you watch the video, he plays four of them. The only one he doesn't seem to play is the bottom one.
che chitarra!!
Rick's 5 neck is killer
