The point of progressive music is (among other things) to be dynamic and always changing and going different places. That's the beauty of it, and what makes the genre stand apart from other types of more mainstream music...every song is an adventure, and you never know where the song is going to go next. I guess it's not for everyone, but that's why I love it.

I can totally understand what Wolfkain is saying there about all of those elements that he's saying could have been expanded more. Those little elements are what I love about Dream Theater. When I listen to them I am brought back to a time when I first heard bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Styx, Rush, King Crimson, Kansas, E.L.O. and so many other bands I grew up listening to. I always felt that was Dream Theater paying tribute to the bands that came before them and I love them for that.

Dream theater is my favorite band and I would definitely subscribe if I knew you guys were going to do more of them. I would really love to recommend the Count of Tuscany. I believe he would both love it.

Wolf prog is tricky because sometimes the harder you try the less sense it makes. My best advice is to not try and figure anything out just let the music take it's time and do it's thing. The best way for me is to follow a single instrument in this instance I would start with the drums as they will lead you through and hopefully connect the dots. Or just put it on in the background while working on something else on a loop, it will click.

Part one of this song is right before it on the album called Far from Heaven, it gives the meaning better context and balance and makes the last riff have so much more impact in Breaking All Illusions

Well.. even the way they write it, goes in this direction, basically: jazz! They jam and jam, select the best ideas and compile together. Yes a lot of music could be done from it. But they wouldn't have the time! Its sooo many ideas baby

"What is it we're trying to achieve here?" Hmmm: for me, the answer is encapsulated within the word used to describe the style - 'progressive'; though it does depend upon how the individual interprets the word.
Sure; there's "progression" in the musical sense... but that's only being literal about the chord changes, the transitions of metre, tempo, volume, feel and other straightforward musical considerations in much the same way as you could describe a journey in a motor vehicle as mundanely, while 'passengers' on that same journey may well describe the changes of speed and engine rhythm, twists and turns, let alone the passing scenery and it's impact upon them in ways that are more in touch with their emotional as well as physical responses to all that they're experiencing as they "progress" along the journey they're being taken on.
So... the sounds are like the trees, bushes, clouds, houses, telegraph poles, signs, people, and other vehicles as they pass by, some you can linger on as the vehicle you're taking the journey in slows, while others rush past so quickly their impact is almost subliminal, while other sensations from the other senses add even further to the experience, like the vibrations that rise and fall as the velocity does the same, or the aromas that fleetingly come and go as regions change from rural to industrial or suburban.... So many things to experience on each and every journey - often unexpected; sometimes confusing but connected by the thread of tarmac that leads from one starting off point to each new destination.
That's sort of what "progressive" is for me; and like pretty well every form of art, there is no right or wrong way to approach or appreciate it. Nor is it a requirement of human existence that anyone 'must' appreciate something merely because some other people appear to... but it is a mighty fine thing as far as I can tell, that the amazing and never ending variety of creative product we are able to immerse ourselves in in this day and age allows us to find at least a bunch of different things that aren't all clones of each other that we can appreciate and enjoy!
BTW: A few observations from this reaction video... I couldn't help but notice that there were a couple of occasions where Sistah looked ready to ravish Wolf or at least was hoping he'd consider putting this track onto his "making love to my love" play list!!! 😮😁 And I also couldn't help but notice you both using the same brand and model of headset I use with my electronic drum kit!
Take care and "Cheers" from Down Under!!

I must say, this is the first time I watched your video to the end. I loved the very end, the credit part. The graphics are the best. And you have the tail from the plane, with the DT logo, Bonkers!! But I must say, you have a great production going on here. More Dream Theater!!! the crowd shouted... I've enjoyed them since 1995, and have been my Fav since. The whole Awake album is mind numbing. It's so addictive. Somedays I just don't feel right until I heard me some DT. It reassures me that mankind isn't totally lost yet. These guys produce a sound that you Can't put a genre on. It's a Class all its own.

...but you also know that the entire song is a masterpiece.
Something like Symphony X - Reign in Madness(!), Blind Guardian - Sacred Worlds or Epica - Kingdom of Heaven (the first from 2009) would be VERY interesting to see.

My favorite Dream Theater Album, but it doesn't have my favorite Dream Theater song, which is These Walls from Octivarium. Also, if you like Prog Rock, a very very underrated prog rock band from back in the day is Nektar. Try A Tab in the Ocean. If you like that then you'll like their first 4 albums. A Tab in the Ocean is their second, but Journey to the Center of the Eye is pretty strange but it's good. This is Nektar is very good, Recycle is very good. Also, if you haven't already, A Dramatic Turn of Events is meant to be listened to from beginning to end, as it has a lot of repeating melodies that tie the entire album together, and actually gives the song more impact when you get to it from the beginning of the album.

DT is my second favorite band after Nightwish, actually they were my favorite band before I discovered Nightwish in early 2000's. Yeah, I understand your sentiment that sometimes it seams they are unnecessarily complicating things where beautiful melody gets lost in those strange keyboard sections, but that started to happen more since Jordan Rudess joined the band but it is what it is, you just have to accept it :) But they have so many epic and amazing songs that you would certainly like. Anything from Images and Words album is amazing, Metropolis is a must, also Learning to Live, Pull me Under, Time! Count of Tuscany is a must, Illumination Theory and so on. Their catalogue is epic so just keep on pushing through :)

    Hi
there is currently no better progressive metal band than Dream Theater
many heavy metal elements like Metallica and Iron Maiden but all mixed with Yes, Rush, Genesis and Pink Floyd among others
my recommendation for you would be the song Octavariun !!!!
best tribute to progressive rock of the 70s
    greetings from Venezuel

The feeling of wanting to hear more of some nice riff, idea or piece of melody is constant with DT songs, especially on the first listening😄 I can relate to Wolf's expressions. But it takes multiple times of active listening and then it just clicks. I like their new single "The Alien" a lot. And some other other newer stuff aswell like "Pale blue dot" (Sagan references! And a nice drum cam from Mangini). Have fun listening!

George, I share your opinion. Despite all the virtuosity, the songs by Dream Theatre's way of being progressive come across as stuck together without really knowing which end to stick to what. Each passage in itself is beautiful, and then you get the next one slammed in your face.
It's like having a five star dinner, but you only get to sniff the soup as it is taken away before you had time to grab a spoon, then get a delicious bit of steak with a sauce made right in heaven, and as you enjoy it, as you open your mouth to have the third bite, the chef comes and pies you with the desert and asks if you'd like the tiniest of leaves of mint to finish it of.
Bewildering and spoiling the experience. And yes, I had that scene from The Meaning of Life on my mind there. ^^)

    • @NatJulianBelza

I totally get what you mean mate. But that is because, you only did it once in that Progressive Resto and never came back. You'll have to do it at least 3 to 5 times depending on the size of the menu. ;) It's like learning a new language, initially you can't keep up, you feel like people who are fluent to the language are too fast. But if you pursue to expand your horizon, persevere through the hurdles, you continue to interact with these people fluent to the language and you get familiar with the habits, you will understand and be able to think as fast and become more fluent to it.
As for Dream Theater, these short snippets are just their way to pay homage to their musical influences.
