Dream Theater is not something you just throw on when you wanna listen to some metal. It takes time and investment to listen to, and it is an adventure in itself!
This is a prime example on the complex time signatures, artistic melodies, beautiful composition, and in general impeccable musicianship.
When the right mood strikes me, there is no one better to fill the silence than Dream Theater.

100% right! I first listened to dream theater through Pull Me Under and I'll be honest. I was turned off just because of the length (I would usually listen to songs that were less than 5 minutes long at most) but around 2 months ago I watched Ola Englund's video of him learning the solo to Another Day and when I heard the solo I thought "maybe I should listen to dream theater again" and listened to Another Day. That song made me fall in love with them and now they're my favorite band of all time now

There was a group of us in High School that found these guys back when Images and Words came out. We were all band nerds in school. We wore that disk out. For the past 20 or so years every time DT come through anywhere close to Dallas we all go and see them. We just saw them just last month as they came through Dallas and it's evolved to the point of one guy is now bringing his kids with him to the shows.

The reason they won the Grammy, is the lyrical content 😉 Pay close attention to the lyrics. They're saying "humans" are becoming the "Alien" with all of our recent explorations into going to outer space (Blue Origins, Space X, etc). And we have historically had a "negative" impression of what "aliens" are.

I realize now that DT has been part of my musical diet for 30 years. Not as much as it used to be since my appreciation for things has broadened a lot over time, but they still get regular playtime. I'm only 5 years away from having been into metal for 50 years. That's quite some mileage, good thing I'm not old. Been told I'm too old to be listening to the stuff I like, were do people get that from ?
I bought Kill 'em All on vinyl the day it got released, why would I listen to Andrews Sisters now ?

Great reaction and review. I discovered Dream Theater back in 1993 while sitting in my dorm with the latest "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" issue, which contained the sheet music and tab for "Take the Time" (off of Images and Words). I had played some complicated music while in the high school orchestra (playing trumpet) and was dumbfounded when I couldn't read this piece. I immediately bought the album so I could read along (with my jaw on the floor) and have been a huge fan ever since (and seen them live 6 times).

To me it is like a heavy metal/prog symphony, always is when listening to Dream Theater. Being local boys from Long Island, NY, I've seen them way back before becoming big, along with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and a few others. Put your brain to it and listen, and you will hear a lot more going on in these compositions.

I was in a DT tribute band for a number of years and during that time new DT releases where actually stressful for me because I knew I had a ton of work ahead of me learning whatever madness it was they where releasing at the time. Now I can do what I had been doing as a DT fan since the late 80's - just enjoy it for what it is. And I am SO happy that they finally won a Grammy. Cheers!
EDIT: If you want some gorgeous and soulful solos from John Petrucci, here's a starter pack:
    Fall Into the Light
    The Spirit Carries On
Lines in The Sand (my favorite JP solo to play)

I was huge into DT myself around Scenes from a Memory (which got me into them- first DT song I ever heard was Home- and I went OMG!!!) through Train of Thought- and really liked Images and Words. After Train- I still followed them and have liked a few songs from each album, but in my mind Scenes is their best even with Train of Thought second. It was awesome seeing them a couple years back doing the song Metropolis part one and then the whole album Scenes after. Crazy that they won a Grammy- I thought awards shows like that don’t give a crap about complex melodic music like DT’s.

Going over gear for Dream Theater should be easy. They almost never change anything.
Petrucci uses a Music Man, either a Majesty or his JP series into a Mesa Boogie JP-2C.
Myung uses his Music Man Bongo into Ashdown AMB600.
Mangini is using Pearl and Zildjian.
I never know what Rudess is doing.
Two additional items - 17/8 is EXTREMELY NERDY. It is not just you.
I saw them live a few weeks ago and their live tone is just as immaculate as the album.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. At this point this is a band that know exactly what they are and what kind of music they like creating. They continue in my opinion to produce excellent songs and albums and I hope they can continue to do so for quite a while.

My perspective is so different that it's really wild to think that it's exactly the same. I didn't even know such a band existed back then, during my student days (so, a while back, but not *too* long) a friend played me The Count of Tuscany and I did not even like it. Since then I came to appreciate metal as a whole as a genre, and as a nuanced experience with myriads of sub-genres, and I came back to listening to things like The Dance Of Eternity or japanese Tricot and F*CK do I love the progressive stuff now...
My favorite band I discovered in the last three years is Sokoninaru (to which I *will* listen for hours on end) and I'm just so grateful to all these reaction channels and for all the people who actually take the time to comment and recommend stuff that's either similar - or really different - without whom I'd never have found half of the bands I listen to now.
So with all that out of the way... "Teeth of the Hydra", what's an actual roadie got to say about THAT thing ???

AMAZING honest reaction. MY opinion? I believe that 3 of their last 4 albums have been their best. Their album "The Astonishing" was their longest at 2 HOURS AND 10 MINUTES LONG... This past album was recorded like their last at DTHQ, their own "homemade" studio. Myung, Petrucci and Labrie have always been their core... With Mike Mangini, they have gone into a new level of talent beyond anything I have ever heard (even though I love portnoy). Next best listen would be the titular song of this album, "A View From The Top Of The World"
About 5050 instrumental with some of the fastest and most technical solos from Petrucci and Mangini...(sorry for the superfandomness)

    Dude, same.
I was hard into this band when a guitar playing friend introduced me to them in high school. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Scenes From a Memory were the big ones.
He had me come with him and his dad for the Train of Thought tour, and it was phenomenal. They played "in the round", so a rotating stage in the middle with the audience sitting stadium-style around them. It was an awesome show (the only other time I came back to this venue was to see Joe Satriani play for his Super Colossal album tour). The crowd loved it, some excited older fan proclaimed to my friend and I (the youngest people at the concert) that we "just witnessed history" lol I bought a long sleeve tour shirt and the album. "As I Am" is still a favorite. The album came out my graduation year.
I stuck it out longer than you, though. I got Octavarium and the last time I saw them live was Systematic Chaos, also an overall great show except I took a date to the concert, a best friend, and at some point the excess you mentioned finally hit... when Jordan Rudess came out to key-tar solo, he was hitting and sustaining notes that were grating and enough that she almost left... she didn't, but she was pissed. It was annoying to my ears but it hurt her ears.
And that's about the time after I fell out of them as well... new albums were announced and I just didn't have that drive to go check them out. My mom bought me a bluray for a gift, Live at Luna Park, and I realized drummer Mike Portnoy was missing... and then I found out how he was more or less removed from the band and that didn't sit well with me, and as I already hadn't heard their newest stuff, I just fell out of them.
So here's my surprise seeing you do a reaction to one of their songs, so I'm listening to it, as you are, and it's pretty damn awesome. It'll go on my Spotify playlist and join the tracks from my heyday hearing them... I'm not sure if I'm going to dive into the whole album.
That said, this was a solid task and congratulations to them for winning a grammy...something nearly impossible in metal (it seems)

This album definitely re-sparked that flame I lost and I really dig a lot that I missed or didn't like for a long time. Tbh I know less about music and music theory and all the technical shit than you and despite that I don’t have much issue getting into prog. I can enjoy everything that’s going on without having to go to deep into it ya know, the solos the drumming and timing, the vocals.
While I know what you mean about it being nerdy in a sense and I do get that vibe from a lot of DT songs, I guess I can just appreciate and enjoy the sound without needing to know anything lol

When he said it was in 17/8, I fully expected it but followed the lie lol. Been a DT fan since Octavarium, and Prog changed me and my musical determination. Awesome reaction Tank!

Great reaction. The 12 steps album is amazing.
"The Glass Prison" - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
"This Dying Soul" - Train of Thought
"The Root of All Evil" - Octavarium
    "Repentance" - Systematic Chaos
"The Shattered Fortress" - Black Clouds and Silver Linings
Definitely check them out. Talks about the out-of-control Mike Portnoy and his steps to overcome alcoholism. I've checked them out myself and it definitely helps.
    Cheers

Since you like this, I think you will like Distance Over Time, they're previous album. I haven't listened to Dream Theater in a few months but I think I will today.

Let us appreciate the incredible drumming of Mike Mangini on this track. And if you really want to have your mind blown look up Mangini’s The Alien tour prep video on UA-cam where he plays this at 110% speed. 🤯

I had a similar experience with a big Dream Theater gap in my life of listening to music. After Systematic Chaos (the album after Octavarium) I didn't really listen to anything new by Dream Theater until just a few years ago so the gap was also around 10 years. I did occasionally still listen to the stuff I already knew but I never touched the newer albums. After revisiting them I found several songs on the newer albums that I really loved.
If you really haven't listened to Dream Theater since Octavarium I very much recommend:
The Dark Eternal Night (from Systematic Chaos)
A Nightmare to Remember (from Black Clouds & Silver Linings)
The Count of Tuscany (from Black Clouds & Silver Linings)
The Enemy Inside (from Dream Theater, the first album where Mike Mangini was involved in the creative process)
Room 137 (from Distance over Time)
I haven't listened a lot to "A View from the Top of the World" yet so I can't think of a favourite song off the top of my head and "The Astonishing" is sort of a concept album with a story through the whole thing, musical themes for characters and all that sort of stuff so it's in a different category in my head than the "regular" albums. I don't think it was a bad album but I listened through it once or twice in it's entirety and not really to individual songs disconnected from the rest.

In 2016, I saw Dream Theater on The Astonishing tour. Before, I listened to their catalogue on my music app. I sat beside two people where were fans since their teens. Eventually, they involved me in a conversation. They moved away from me when I said I wasn't a fan, but wanted to give them a listen. Seeing them live did not convince me. I'm still not a fan. I'm 70 years old and I've been to a lot of concerts especially since I've been retired. I know what I like. And don't like.

I think the Grammy was a "We have to give them at least ONE TIME a Grammy.", instead from deserved for THIS Song particularly.
For me, nearly any other (older) DT-Song would have been better suited for a Grammy, but hey - better ONE than NONE. 😜

Brother it was more like this Grammy board...... OK guys We've missed these guys Last Decade or better. We Owe this to Them! And alien is a Very fitting candidate. Though So is 100 other DT songs. But I love Theater as I said started with 1st album o bought Systematic Chaos. If you forced yourself to listen to it. Hmm interesting. If you haven't checked out The Album.

Great song. John Petrucci is incredible. Mancini a great drummer. I just prefer Portnoy. Try the song Terminal Velocity, Petrucci solo work last year with Portnoy. Constant Motion still a favorite Dream Theater song. Just me, DT was always Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung.

I was a huge Dream Theater fan in the 90s & 2000s. Kinda gotten away from them in the 2010s, tho I still bought the albums/went to shows. For my money, the British band Haken were/are more interesting, doing this same type of music, in the 2010s.
Still, this new Dream Theater album is a banger if one is into this genre. Might be the best one they've done with Mangini on drums.

    • @RudyBleeker
      @RudyBleeker 2 роки тому

I agree with that last sentence. Not looking for a Mangini vs Portnoy debate here, they're both phenomenal drummers, but for the first few albums with Mangini on drums it kinda felt like he had to find his footing with the band. Only with their previous album Distance Over Time and now this one do I feel the drumming is once again a big part of the composition and feel of the songs.

Interesting to hear you reminisce about the band as that sounded just like me, around Train of Thought they were probably my favourite band but I hated Octavarium and have since fallen out of love of the band, at least their more modern stuff.
For me that was a well executed track, and probably one of Petrucci's better solos as it felt like its telling it's own story and not just aimless shredding which he can be accused of on occasion, but doesn't offer anything new that I haven't heard from them in the last 30 years. In fact parts of this song are lifted wholesale from earlier tracks, particularly Metropolis Part 1, as demonstrated by Becoming the Knight in his review of this song, which explains why I find so much of their more recent materiel so uninspired and overly familier.

I’ll get flamed for this but I just don’t feel this album (as well as the astonishing). Most of this album sounds like rehashed sounds from albums line systematic chaos, black clouds and even the DT album. I’m not talking about pre or post portnoy albums as I enjoy both. I just find the last couple of albums from them are about how many notes to fill in a song and they have not progressed as a band. Their sound stays the same and sometimes goes back to old days. I love it when bands throw us a curveball and DT hasn’t in a long time. I do love the mix and in this and their live release we can finally hear the bass! My son plays bass and he was commenting on how insane sone of the bass lines are.

I was also big into DT while I was in high school. (Hilariously, I found them through an anime special. Someone who worked on the dub must’ve been a fan because they replaced all the original music with songs from Scenes From a Memory.) I lost interest after Octavarium. Tried a few songs in the years since, and they just didn’t do it for me. Unfortunately, this didn’t do anything for me either. It was too technical. Their old stuff could be like that too, but at least there was some kind of hook. With this, I kept waiting to be drawn in, and it never happened.

I agrre that the mixing, tone, and guita/bass sound all sounds great, and you can put this song in the catagory, for well produced songs, still its not the song i will listen to, with my headphones on, going down the street.. the guitar solo´s do feel to me they are just 10 secs to long, and yes overall great song, just not one i will listen to every week, still respect for the production of it.
