my father philip vile produced this video after he met vince at a production meeting with decca records. vince asked him to 'create something that feels like falling', and so my dad made this video with a contemporary flavour. he was paid £9,000.
It was a glorious time ..we burned the candles both ends and it was always worth it !!! You can say a lot about the 80s if you wanted to disparage it ..but one thing you couldn't say was the nite life was bad and no fun ...I wouldn't swap my teen years in the 80s for any other decade .certainly not now ..im not just saying this for dramatic effect but now is 'SHITE'

Baby Baby No ain't music. it's repetition. but Sometimes Oh L'amour does it for me more than Ship Of Fools which reminds me of a friend and reminds me of myself in my elementary school and junior high school days. 🎶☮️🎶 it's nostalgia. 🎶
This is my fav song by Erasure. I remember going to see them in the early 90's. Great performance marred by Bell doing his gay thing, it didn't go down well in a hard nosed city.
Me, myself and I. November 2024...loved them since their early days circa '85 and seen in concert 4 times. Amazing vocals & lyrics. Clarke & Bell were the finest there ever was!!
Anastasia Ozerova Keep on listening. These guys are amazing. One of the first bands I was interested in as a kid. I listened to my cassette of ‘Pop! ..’ constantly.
I remember quite well when I first heard this song. I was twelve. My mother didn't like "pop music" but I needed something, so I saved up my pocket money, went to Woolworths in Kings Heath, and bought "Smash Hits Party '88" on a tape. Most of the songs were rubbish (apart from Hazel O'Connor) but I loved this one very much. X
Herrliche Zeiten!!!!
I was in the Air Force, stationed in Myrtle Beach when The Innocents came out. Played the cassette tape and nothing else for at least a month straight. Ship of Fools is probably my favorite Erasure song. Gorgeous video too.
Everything Vince Clark put in his hands become pure Gold! ❤ what a Genius.....Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure totaly different but each one oft them defined 80"s
Part of my growing up I can relate to this song. The lyrics of Ship of Fools are poetic and metaphorical, and it’s easy to get lost in the melody and overlook the meaning behind the words. The song speaks of a ship sailing across the sea, carrying a group of people who are lost, aimless, and confused. The song talks about how these people are cast adrift, searching for something they cannot find. The song’s overall message speaks to the idea of people who are lost in their lives, searching for meaning and purpose. The ship of fools represents the idea of people who are following a misguided path, drifting aimlessly without any clear direction. The song’s message is that it’s important to find your own way, to chart a course through life that is meaningful and fulfilling.
One time I ended up in a dream-like party, at a penthouse overlooking Central park, with people I never saw before , a buddy and I were heading to the Limelight and I forgot my ID that night. Those random ppl invited us on their way there.. Ship of fools was playing as the stars aligned and I met the girl of my dreams, we were people-watching, laughing, that view as a backdrop. I'll never forget this great song
This music is beautiful!!! How I would like to go back to that time, the 80s, even without the Internet, cell phones and today's technology. We were happier, we had more friends, we left the house more, to talk and live life, without fear and in safety. The world today is a cold, sad, dark and sick place.
The way I see it is; the world's what YOU make it. If you wake up and say "oh another day of misery", well that's what your going to get. So I wake up and say "time to shine" and "thank you wonderful life". See the best in everything and everyone and you'll enjoy every moment. Be gentle with yourself ♥️🌟
One of the underrated songs the band put out. Love the vibe on this track...it rolls along like a wave, washes over you and just is one of the most comforting tracks that are around. It's like a sad but meaningful embrace, best way to describe it as you watch events unfold before your eyes in the world.
I’m 51 and when I first heard Erasure I was in high school. I never really listened closely to this song back then. Nowadays, I absolutely adore it!! ❤
What a great era for music, was born in 81 so had the fortune to grow through the 80's and as a young listener it was such a great time to be alive remember the innocents album from 88 being a 7 year old and being in awe of this music. Long live the glorious memories

I always listen to this song every day without ever getting bored, one of the best electro pop songs ever written (the climax of voice harmonies at the end are unbelievable!) - geniuses
I always admired the harmonic vocals at the fade out. Songs dont fade anymore they just end abrubtly, sounds stupid to me. The Fade Out was a way for musicians to add something new to the song as yet unheard, Andy's harmonising with himself at the end absolutely makes the hairs stand on end.
my best friend/boyfriend listens to rap&RnB.when he heard this song he asked me to rewind the song so we could hear it again. He also writes poetry & he is far from a softy. way to go ERASURE.

This is one of my all time favourite songs of all time! Certainly in my best of all Top 5. Erasure are probably the most underrated bands. This song is a masterclass in poetry and music. It brings joy to my ears and tears to my eyes and heart. Love to Andy & Vincent xx
I discovered this song 2 nights ago on greatest hits radio. I’m 34 now, and as a massive erasure fan from the age of 3, I was cheated my whole life of this song. It has so much relevance that I think it was made for moi
Really pleased you finally discovered Erasures (in my opinion) finest work. I will never forget my first time listening to this tune back in 96. I'd have been17, 18 yrs old. It was part of a long play list on our work place radio station in N LDN. Blew me away! I asked a slightly older team member (knowing it was 80s Erasure by Andy's distinct rich, velvety vocals but not knowing the tracks title) if he knew the name & he just said 'Ship of Fool's'. Drove to 'Our Price' (Record store, in case you're too young to remember) straight after work & bought their 20 greatest hits album. Love the video too though it's because of Andy Bells face as I regard his to be one of the most beautiful of the pop decade. Gorgeous, stunning! Fortunate to spot him back in the day sat at the top floor of 'The Black Cap', Camden NW1 sitting amongst a table of far older lesbians than himself......slightly odd, maybe?!?! Sure you'll be listening to this tune forever more! Safe warm hugs from South Somerset🏳️🌈🇬🇧🏴❤️
This song got me through the first year of the pandemic, i was in a mentally dark place and id jump rope at dusk and play this song on repeat to help me get through the day.
When this song came out, I think on The Innocents album, we just got the entire album and listened to it over and over. This is one of the most amazing slow songs. 80s music and Erasure sound, the voice, was an amazing addition to that incredible era of music and feeling.
For me the 80´s are Abba in the beginning with their last albums, Erasure middle 80´s and Roxette at the end of the 80´s. The melodies of this 3 bands are exquisite and unforgettable.

What I love about Erasure is the amount of emotion they put into each song. It's amazing!
Vince Clarke is a genius. And Andy was the perfect singer to bring these songs to life, an "actor" who played them with such emotion.
Why the need for obscene language?
Yes; and the same high level of emotion no matter how many times they perform a song...they never "phone it in" as so many other long-term performers do.
