Different Hollow Form - Wood Turning
Вставка

- My third time turning Mesquite, all from the same piece. As much as I don't love the shape of this one, it still may be my favorite. I got a really great finish on it and I think the bark balances out any deficiencies in my design. I had a pretty hard time with some aspects of this piece but must admit, it was pretty fun to turn. Finished in Danish Oil.

Oh, it's gorgeous, I love the shape, and I do hope you use it again in the future.😊
Thank you! Cheers! 😀
It’s a beautiful bowl, I’m a huge fan of retaining the bark when possible. Nice design and grain. ♥️
Me too, Maddie! 😊
Beautiful thanks for sharingm
Phil, I think it’s beautiful and I’m glad that you do now because I was going to suggest if you were thinking of throwing it away please throw it in my trash LOL. Joking apart, it’s gorgeous.
LOL! Thanks, Martin! 😊
Phil there you go again beating yourself up over nothing - this is a beautiful work of art! Good to see you - you seem much more yourself after the past couple weeks, hope you're well on the mend.
😊
awesome videos and excellent instruction for new comers. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! 😊
Phil, you seem invest heart and soul into each piece you turn. It shows in how beautifully they come out every time.
Thank you, Elizabeth! 😊
Another great turning.Thanks!
😊
As you know, sometimes wood has a mind of its own. Beautiful.
😊
looks good -- my niece & her are being me some mesquite-- now I an idea of what it looks like -- thank you
Hope you enjoy, Lynda! 😊 It's a very hard wood so sharp tools are a must. Also, patience! LOL!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop thank you for the heads-up. Your advice is always welcomed
You my friend are like the Bob Ross of wood turning, even the hair!!! Okay, not so much “the hair”. In all seriousness, it’s an honor and pleasure to watch both you and Bob Ross go from your respective raw materials to an artistic thing of beauty. As always, AMAZING!
I actually used to have hair just like Bob's, Gary! Thank you! 😊
Very beautiful Phil love it take care and God bless
Thank you, Mike, I'm glad you like it! 😊
Wow Phil, Your dexterity getting into that vase with the various tools including the old sock have made a beautiful piece. Great job Phil grain is dynamite the oil finish is beautiful.
Thanks, Bob! 😊
Love it. The shape reminds me of an American Indian basket. And I see an owls eyes in the grain.
😊
Hi Phil. Down here in AZ, 75% of what I turn are landscaper discards of mesquite. One weekend I went to Woodcraft with a piece because I wanted a better type of finish. The woodturner there, says “walnut oil”. I have now used pints and pints of it. If I want more shine, buff it and wax it. Mesquite is a beautiful wood.
😊
Good morning Phil. I love turning mesquite. I turn a lot green and slightly wet wood. I findit easier and seems to be darker. I have used Miniwax Wipe- on Poly with great success. Satin and gloss being the 2 finishes I have used. I found that the wet wood seems to preserve the darker look.
Thanks for your videos. They are my go- to sources when I need help.
I love mesquite. But you didn’t have any worms or beetles. They make turning mesquite a unique experience. I’m not a fan of rhombus shapes. They seem to fight against the natural perspective of the wood grain and natural edge. Enjoyed your process and narration. Thanks.
Walnut oil. That's a great idea.
To think I never used mesquite for anything except smoking wood.
Very nice Phil- thanks for sharing
😊
I think it turned out really nice Phil. The finish looks really good, really brings out the contrasting colors of the grain. The shape is unique, like most everything else you do. Thats why we all watch your great videos. You never just turn a bowl, your always use the beauty of nature to set your work apart. Really nicely done !
Thanks, Jason, I appreciate your great comment! 😊
The shape you thought was ugly kinda looked like a flying saucer. I don't think they built them out of wood but as a prototype design it's not ugly to me. As a bowling might not be the best shape.
I really enjoy watching & listening to you work. Thanks for that, much better than 90+% of what's on television.
Haha, it's got all kinds of shapes going on, I guess. Mostly just different! Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment! 😊
Another beauty. I also love the shape and grain and the whole thing. A lot of work goes into your projects and makes them one of a kind. :)
Thank you, Marge, I appreciate your great comment! 😊
I like it Phil different is always good very beautiful grain Shape agree with every you sad great job my friend Sam
Thanks, Sam! 😊
Another unique beauty! Have to be honest i was skeptical about how it was going to turn out about half way though but the finished piece extinguished all my doubts. Great job and thanks for another lesson and great video!
Thanks, Eddie! 😊
I like it Phil, I’m with you, I didn’t in the beginning, but I love the finished product
Perfect! 😊
The finish looks terrific on this one Phil. I think you had the right idea using the Danish Oil knowing it would soak in more.
Pretty cool shape as well. I saw Tweety Bird at first but by the time you turned it to the other side he must have flown away because I saw the two eyed monster and could not get that out of my head. And for sure the bark looks great.
Nicely done!
Gary
Thanks a lot, buddy! It took awhile to develop a shape I could live with, that's for sure. Tweety is still there but he's very quick! 😊
Great new shape Phil, thanks. Graham UK
Thank you, Graham! 😊
Hi Phil - recent subscriber here after watching your channel for a couple of weeks. Great video! I like how you bring your viewers through your thoughts on what you should do with each piece, problems you run into and your viewers' opinion on what you're doing - and how you just plain wing it from beginning to end! I find your humility really engaging and it shows your viewers that woodturning is really all about having fun as you create something spectacular. I am hoping to make this part of my retired life someday. Cheers from CT!
It's a great retirement hobby, Scott, best wishes with it! 😊
I the Master’s hand even the most difficult turns out beautiful.
😊
The grain is fantastic but the shape with the sharp centre edge didn’t work for me. Saving the live edge was well worth it. As always Phil we learn so much from your coverage you are a true inspiration 🤴
Thanks a lot, David! 😊
Hi Phil. You have heard the expression "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but in your case, beauty is in the eye of the turner.... and the viewers. I never see an ugly piece from your lathe. Grain gob!!
Thank you kindly, John! 😊
Very unique and beautiful Phil.
😊
Amazing, Phil, you are a genius.
Haha, oh, OK, thanks! 😊
Thabk y ou for sharing .. mistakes and hurdles and all. Appreciate your insight
Thank you, Gee! 😊
Beautiful Bowl!
Thank you very much! 😊
Hi Phil.. I think it looks great.. everything about it is very cool.. nice job.. stay well and have a great day…
😊
I like it! Like you I wasn’t sure at first.
😊
I loved it from the start Phil I believe it's one of my favorites. You'll hear no complaints from here. I'm living in Georgia now Kingsland, on the St. Mary's River area. Living here has not changed my perspective on your work.
😊
Phil, it’s surprisingly beautiful.
I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😊
It has the look of an emu with the two eyes, and the shape of a Chinese lantern maybe , excellent save with the bark 👍
Thanks, Derek! 😃
"If you want dark wood, the use dark wood." Well said. I love the way you MacGyver items that you have around the shop/house. Wish I had a neighbor like you. I wouldn’t leave the shop. Your videos are outstanding. The audio and visual is perfect. You describe EVERYTHING without being boring. Nice touch. I wonder often when I turn, "does it sound like this when other turners turn X?" Your audio sounds exactly like the sounds I hear, which tells me I may not be messing up as much as I thought. You are an instructor extroidinaire. I learned, I liked, no, I loved the process to get to the final piece of art as much as I loved the final piece of art. Please keep doing what you do Phil. What do I think? I think you’re a genius woodworker!
Wow! You make be blush, Noah. I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you very much! 😀
Nice one Phil 👍. Well turned, well done 👏 Take care, Joseph
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Hi Phil good job on all things that unconventional, and i am glad i am not the only one that talks to themselves. Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
I'm not talking to me, Ernie, I'm talking to you! 😊
Phil, we ARE our own worst critics. The form is nice and although not to your liking, as you said, someone else will most likely love it. I like anything that has an exaggerated middle. I also think the bark around the opening is just right.
I say a good job done the Shady Acres way.
Thank you so much! 😊
Just came back to watch some old videos I haven't seen. Very cool. I like that it's a different shape from what you usually make, and the bark is a nice part of it.
The shape reminds me of something else, but I'm having trouble remembering what. Maybe the beads on this one abacus I had as a kid. I don't know.
Cool, thanks! 😊
Awesome. The two eyed monster at the end looks like one of those gecko lizards.
😊
Beautiful bowl! Love the shape! Going to copy this shape! ))
Cool, I hope it works out for you, Philip! 😊
The piece is beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Good looking bowl
😊
beautiful Phil, worth the hard work
😊
Nice job Phil 👏 👍
Thanks, Ian! 😊
This guy is amazing so talented, makes me wanna learn this craft
Now's the time, Ashley. Watching videos is how I learned. Thank you for your kind comment! 😃
Love it Phil! I can see it is silky smooth too.
😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Had to edit my comment from ''can't'' to ''can''. Don't know why I wrote can't lol. Thanks Phil.
@@hotrodhog2170 I knew what you meant, Hotrod! 😊
Very well done and most excellent job
Thank you, Isaiah! 😊
That yellow oval between the two big "eyes" looks like a beak. It's a Bird Urn. Love it
😄
Nice job Phil. Good work on the live edge.
Glad you liked it, Mark! 😊
another winner, grand job lovely markings liking the dark live edging brilliant job. All the best from us in Lincolnshire UK
Thanks a lot, Gary! 😊
It's such a lovely shape and color. It isn't or usual style but I like it so much.
Groovy, thanks, Judith! 😊
Wish I had collected some mesquite during my time in the desert. I was into rocks then, not wood. Very nice job in that one, as usual.
Bet ya got some cool rocks, though! 😊
I love the shape!
😊
Another great piece!!!
Thank you, Jeff! Cheers!
Another great bowl Phil.
I like it a lot.
Many thanks, Clint! 😊
Great! Looks like a bird house!
😊
Beautiful!
😊
I enjoyed watching how you solved an oops. It turned out to be a beautiful piece. Here in Mississippi, we don’t have mesquite but mostly pine. I have been given some red maple and have one piece that I was trying to make a bowl with. I have an oops where I made the inside too big and cut out a section of the wall. I’m thinking of a couple of ways that I might can salvage it. Since I’m learning still, I’ll probably use it to experiment with it to see if I can make something out of it. Thanks again for showing your oops. It helps us beginning turners to not give up on a project and try something to finish it.
That's the right idea, Thomas. Stick with it, it might surprise you! 😊
As my dad would say, "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" and you went and did it. Turned out really nice. Mesquite is in abundance where I live in central Texas.
😊
Great stuff Phil… as always.
😊
Gorgeous! I think its a one-eyed monster's three sides. It reminds me of a Navajo pot. Good job.
Cool, thanks, Linda! 😊
Love the shape
😊
Like that design! Great job!
Glad you like it 😊
Well I am glad that you grew to like this piece Phil. Sure, it is quite different to your 'normal type' turning but that is good to sometimes step out of your comfort zone. Where the bark comes down the side of the bowl looks a bit like a nose & then you get the 'round' growth rings either side to give you a bit of a face. An interesting piece Phil with lovely colour & grain, I think brought out well by the Danish Oil finish. I don't know how I have not commented on this piece before when I viewed it. Thanks for the journey & cheers, Don from South Aust.
Yes, it did grow on me, Don. It took awhile, though. Thank you my friend!😊
It's beautiful Phil...
It's gorgeous...
We all have that problem of judging the work we do as artists...
We all do it...
But like you did...step back and view it from a different perspective...
I've been a cameraman in Hollywood for over 40 years...
And I can be very judgmental on my self...
I also write scripts...
Do we settle for second best...no...
We just need to look at our work from that different angle...
And we'll find out we have a totally different story from what we were trying...
And you know what...
Those can become the best things we've ever done...lol
Best to you always Phil...
Cool! Will I see you name in movie credits, Robin? 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop only right now from old TV shows...
And some movies from the 90's and earlier...lol
I'm on disability right now and dealing with really bad PTSD...
But your work is beautiful...
Helps me relax...lol
Best always Phil...
Phil - Welcome back, you sound like your old self! Another beautiful piece!
I'm getting there, Art. Thanks! 😊
Beautiful 🌟
😊
I like it, it is a not ordinary piece
😊
This is first bowl that I ever seen that half finished looked like it had hemorrhoids. Fantastic recovery Dr. Phil!
LOL!
I like bark too. I love your appreciation of the natural enhanced by your artistic eye
Thank you, Aliceray! 😊
Lovely job Phil enjoyed the process and finish thanks again
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I really like this piece Phil, well done mate.
Thanks, John! 😊
Well, you have done it again! Out of the mud grows the Lotus!
Nice work!

Love it Phill your work is beautiful as allways
Many thanks, Chris! 😊
Lovely form another special Phil, I use Danish oil a lot and love the finish it gives
Cool, thanks, Chris! 😊
Hi Phil. I love the shape. As an Arizona native, it's not an uncommon shape in the southwest. Beautiful piece.
Thank you kindly! 😊
The grain on this vessel is beautiful and the live edge is the perfect size.
Good to know, thanks, Jean! 😊
I like working Mesquite from our property in Texas. I usually make lamps out of pieces like this and they turn out great. On larger pieces I cut into boards for tables, or what every else I can manage.
Very cool! 😊
Great job with a tough piece of wood. Sometime I like to see the magic you perform at the workbench where you finish off the bottom.
Cool, thanks, Bob! 😊
Real talent so beautiful
Thank you, Vicki! 😊
Phil, you inspire me
And your watching inspires me, Steve, win/win! 😊
Another beautiful bowl . You make me laugh when you talk to yourself .
Haha, you must laugh a lot, Jeff! 😊
I like it very much! 😊
Thank you, Patsy! 😊
Nice, GOOD JOB
😊
I like it Phil!
😊
Love that grain!
Me too, Paul! 😊
Love it Phil. And ya just gotta love it when mother nature throws you something that says ha whatcha gonna do with this 😜?
So true, Edward! 😊
Howdy Phil
Mesquite always reminds me of Black Walnut with a coarse bark .... so nice
The color goes with the outside so good
That piece fling off would have hurt !
Yes, it is hard to get up on the inside .... I found an old , old brush that was standing on the brisels and had the curve to get in the inside great !
The oil looks nice
keep on turnin'
Sounds like a very valuable brush, Bruce! Thanks, buddy! 😊
Very nice!
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
Like the shape. Reminds of western pottery.
Cool, thanks, Howard! 😄
Looks good Phil. Nice grain!
😊
You have pulled another one out a really nice bowl Mr. Anderson thanks for all you do
😊
Looks great. I really appreciate your doubt and then liking what you have accomplished.
Haha, happens more than I care to admit, Frances! 😊
I work with a lot of mesquite here in AZ. I swear by Tung Oil. Easy finish to apply and it is durable over time. Leaves a nice light gloss finish.
Thanks, Mark! 😊
Another great piece Phil 👍
Many thanks, William! 😊
I think it's pretty. Looks like an Indian basket, in wood!
😊
