It would be fitting since you traveled all around Kanto, defeated your rival once and for all, got all 8 Gym badges, defeated Team Rocket, saved the world from them, did hours of searching, training and trading for pokemon, and defeated the Elite 4. And after the credits are done, at the end of it should say this message: CONGRATULATIONS! This is an impressive and monumental accomplishement! YOU ARE A POKEMON MASTER!

I just realized that with the tech present in gold and silver the Pokédex could not “automatically record data” as this would require a DNA scanner of some sort, so in order for the Pokédex to work it would have to have all the data already installed and then reveal said data when you catch a Pokémon. So that means the Pokédex was complete the entire time and the professor is messing with us. It is basically the equivalent of hide and seek.
It's not the reward; it's the fun you had along the way, the countless hours going through breeding lists and pairs, all the trading, etc... It was a fun journey.

And have it reset all the trainers with double their power levels and fully evolved Pokémon. And you can't even brag about it in-game or show it to people or have it change how they react to you?
I agree with the post down below, have it open up secret trainers like Prof. Oak, hospital admin, the weird bespectacled guy that follows you around saying how many badges you've gotten...all of it. And have it reset all the trainers with double their power levels and fully evolved Pokémon.
Hell maybe even allow the player to download an update where you get all the new Pokémon from the next game, or at least a sample like the starter Pokémon, legendaries and whatnot. THAT would be worthwhile.
