- "Ar Hyd y Nos" (English: All Through the Night) is a Welsh song sung to a tune that was first recorded in Edward Jones' Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards (1784). The most commonly sung Welsh lyrics were written by John Ceiriog Hughes (1832-1887), and have been translated into several languages, including English and Breton.
The song is highly popular with traditional Welsh male voice choirs, and is sung by them at festivals in Wales and around the world.

I wrote my own lyrics for this as a lullaby for my children, cribbed from the original and other sources:

This is not the version I was taught as a child in Welsh and English by my Welsh speaking grandfather.
John EL yes very. Unfortunately this happens a lot over here. People decide their kids and grandkids need to assimilate completely. So I’m stuck with the Mabinogion and the BBC Welsh course
John Davis I’ve heard that the Welsh government has launched a plan for a Welsh language revival. How is that going?
Hoptanglish Alive I don’t know. The only news I hear from Wales these days is about Rona. The BBC put out a tape course on the language a while ago which is doing fine. Something to learn while on lockdown.

I recognise this version instantly, I love it so much. This is definitely a recording by Treorchy Male Choir (commonly referred to as Treorchy Male Voice Choir, but Treorchy Male Choir is what they actually call themselves if you're doing a search) - you can buy it on iTunes if you're interested. The BEST rendition of this song imho, and I've listened to a lot of different versions. Hope that helps :-)

@tacfoley There are no women in The Treorchy Male Voice Choir I was being Pedantic just as you were suggesting there were a lot of Female voices in there Male Voice Choir at 76 years old you should know better then surely???
@tacfoley I'm a bit perplexed as to why you wanted to make this comment? If you're interested enough to comment on You Tube, you could have at least done five minute's research, eg, gone on iTunes as I suggested and listened to a free sample of this recording from Treorchy Male Choir's album 'In Harmony', which instantly reveals that it IS the same recording and it IS a male voice choir. (as GWLAD points out there are no women in the Treorchy Male Choir). I searched many recordings of the song as I wanted to include it in my Mum's funeral service last February and this is the one I chose, so it is very special and emotionally significant for me and I would never mistake it for a recording by another choir. Hope that clarifies the issue you have.

As an Italian speaker with a Welsh wife, this is a beautiful song in a beautiful language. But as a Liverpudlian, what a shame that I'm treated so badly in Wales because of my accent. Such horrible racism. It makes me sad as my children are half Welsh and I want them to embrace their culture, but their father is not welcome
What exactly has happened to you that is "horrible racism"
Firstly, having a Liverpudlian accent and being picked on for it is not "racism". More like a prejudice against you.
Secondly, are you aware of any of the history between Wales and England? Especially what Liverpool did to Capel Celyn a few decades ago?
Not using it as an excuse, and I'm sorry to hear that you feel like you're being discriminated against because of your regional accent, but please be a little understanding why they might show that prejudice to you.
We Welsh people experience such comments like yours too, even within our own country and our communities. We still get mocked by our fellow Welsh people for even speaking Welsh and have been taken the mick out of for how I speak, too.

This is NOT a "Folk song"! This is prtobably the National Hymn of Wales. So if you can't understand the welsh, don't attempt to define what you can't understand.
I am Welsh and this is not the National Hymn, it has no official status and is one of many songs, such as Men of Harlech, Sosban Fach, Cwm Rhondda, and others that are commonly known and sung in Wales. Folk song is absolutely a correct description.
