Welsh people (Cymro) are the native Brythonic inhabitants of Britain, Cymro include the modern day Welsh, Cornish, Cumbric and Bretons. The term Welsh came from Anglo-Saxon invaders and stems from the term "Wehl" which meant Stranger/foreigner/Brythonic slave similarly Wales comes from "Wehlas" meaning Land of foreigners/strangers/Brythonic slaves. The term "Cymro" is used when referring to Brythonic people as it means "fellow countryman" similarly Wales is called Cymru in Welsh which means "Land of fellow coutrymen". After the Romans pulled out of Britain the Brythonic peoples had about 1000 years of constant conflict against Gaels, Picts, Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Danes (Gaels, Picts and Danes raided the Welsh coast for a time) The Anglo-Saxons pushed the Brythonic peoples West during their invasion some migrated to Northern France in a place that is now called "Brittany" many others just settled in Wales and Cornwall, Wales consisted of many Brythonic Kindoms but in my opinion the most important two were Gwynedd (where the red dragon on green field originates from) and Deheubarth (responsible for creating Welsh law and defending Wales from the Norman invasion until the sons of Gwynedd attacked them). As a direct result of this conflict Wales has numerous battlefields and castles (look for a map of the castles within Wales). England in Welsh is "Lloegr" which means "the lost lands" similarly Northern England is called "Yr hen ogledd" which means "The Old North" In the 13th century the English occupied Wales, built some castles to keep them down and brought in immigrants to replace the Welsh peasantry in an attempt to make the area loyal to England, despite this Welsh people continued to fight them throughout the 14th century through various revolts but namely a man named Owain Lawgoch (Owain the red hand) had been preparing an invasion to retake Wales after raising an army of Castillians, the English however sent an assassin to befriend and kill murder him. In the Late 14th century - early 15th century another man named Owain Glyndwr started a largely successful uprsising in which various Cymro returned to Wales to aid in the fighting, the French king also sent some knights to aid in the conflict. The uprising ultimately failed as the French king went mad and the French knights were recalled to France and most of the Experienced Welsh fighters had been killed the uprising ended with the English cutting off supply routes and taking Harlech caste, despite this Owain continued to raid English settlements but this was on a far lesser scale. After Henry Tudor (whos father was born to an English queen after a Welsh noble impregnated her) became king by slaying King Richard III many Welsh people saw him as a Welsh king and the revolts ceased to exist, Henry had intended to keep England and Wales seperate, however, after his death his son Henry VIII wanted central control so abolished Welsh law and created "the laws of England and Wales" Thats some Welsh History for you

@@AngloAus Hehe That doesn't ring any bells but I'm sure I knew those words by heart at one point or another. Considering we had to sing hymns not once but TWICE a day, EVERY day, appearance mandatory (well, pretty much *nothing* was optional in our lives back then). But I remember that at least during hymns I was able to practice my "descants"-I guess they'd be called "harmonies" nowadays. That would come in useful when I joined a band.
@@samlosco8441 Yes I know, but it doen't mean it's more normal ^^' Other country when they want do a patriotic song, they do it in theire on language..
@@azx43 Because it’s the dominant language lmao, if people cannot understand what you sing then why sing a patriotic song at all? For example, Ukrainian patriotic music is in Russian because that is the dominant language there. Same goes for Belarus, with Belorussian being a borderline dead language. Various African states use their former colonizers language rather than their own native tongue/s because the majority of the population also likely learns the language of their former colonizer. The list goes on.
Because Welsh patriotism doesn't focus on going "Ree England" all the time. Foreign people fail to understand this usually because they think every nation in the UK is like Ireland, rather than realising each has its own individual views

Sad!
Well the Saes doesn't speak Welsh.
Well, they were shouting in the Snake language so that they could understand them - its called getting mocked. Hahahahaha.
@@themanhimself1229 ye but it's a shame most Welshmen and Irishmen are apathetic about using the language of their longtime oppressors. Everyone is a colony of America too anyway

They've got a very good base section, mind. But no top tenners, that's for sure."
It’s nice how the british army kept it as a military march
Bryn Terfel is a treasure. I remember when he sang rule britannia at the proms and sang the last verse in Welsh it was amazing and probably the best performance of the song I've heard
I really love the upbeat tune of this song 😊😊
Btw, what’s the name of the painting in the background?
Which?
Castell Criciaeth

King Arthur forever! Long live the spirit of our Romano-Briton forebears.

I swear I've never heard two recordings of this song with the same lyrics
They have a lot of top tenors, mind-- but no bass section, that's for sure...
I love the smells of burning Zulu in the morning, it smells victory

Very very nice song🌾🌾🎶
I have to admit that Welsh is a beautiful language
If Wales gets Independence this should be their anthem
Wales already has one. And its far superior to this.
Favourite scene in Zulu and a brilliant patriotic Welsh song.
This is the better version of that shite in Zulu

Beautiful! Ken-edl heb yayth, kenedl heb gal-on. My mother's Morris family identified as Welsh - though I doubt there was much Welsh in the family tree by the time I arrived. They were in Ulster for 100 years and early to America.

If Scotland leaves the UK then would the background of the UK flag be Wales’s White and Green or would it be yellow for ulster or would it be white

I am part Welsh. Don't know much about Wales but I am interested!
England in Welsh is "Lloegr" which means "the lost lands" similarly Northern England is called "Yr hen ogledd" which means "The Old North"
In the 13th century the English occupied Wales, built some castles to keep them down and brought in immigrants to replace the Welsh peasantry in an attempt to make the area loyal to England, despite this Welsh people continued to fight them throughout the 14th century through various revolts but namely a man named Owain Lawgoch (Owain the red hand) had been preparing an invasion to retake Wales after raising an army of Castillians, the English however sent an assassin to befriend and kill murder him.
After Henry Tudor (whos father was born to an English queen after a Welsh noble impregnated her) became king by slaying King Richard III many Welsh people saw him as a Welsh king and the revolts ceased to exist, Henry had intended to keep England and Wales seperate, however, after his death his son Henry VIII wanted central control so abolished Welsh law and created "the laws of England and Wales"

Nope - Wales is thankfully not included on the butchers apron, that rag that isn't a British flag.
@@taffyducks544 it is included in the British isles tho
@@ColonialEagle5455 yeah, Geographically. And they are the actual Britons to boot. But that flag is not the British flag, just a union rag. Y Ddraig Goch is the British flag and pre dates the union flag by 1200 years, the English by 800, and Scottish by around 200
Damn . . . I used to have to sing this hymn at boarding school in England in the late 60s and early 70s. This and that damn song "And did those feet in ancient time" and half a dozen others I'd remember if they played them back to me.
I remember this tune but I sure don't remember the lyrics . . . I think they must have had a simplified version to give the kids to sing.
Thanks for the time machine . . .55 years is a long, long time.
The other song you mention is called “Jerusalem”
@@AngloAus That's right! That was one of the few that I actually *loved* singing. That and "Those in peril on the sea" . . . again, I forget the title.
@@kamakirinoko that one is called “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.”
Can you do a Colombian song? The anthem would be good too

How can you have a Welsh Patriotic Song with a part in english ?! It makes no sense.
@@samlosco8441 Yes I know, but it doen't mean it's more normal ^^'
Other country when they want do a patriotic song, they do it in theire on language..
The list goes on.
the song is originally in Cymraeg of course.
Because Welsh patriotism doesn't focus on going "Ree England" all the time. Foreign people fail to understand this usually because they think every nation in the UK is like Ireland, rather than realising each has its own individual views
@@Kav. i dont think they meant it like that. the english have oppressed our language and culture so much in history so its quite ironic that some people turn Welsh songs into English.
I recall in the 1960's when I attended the University of Okkahoma, just before each of the home football games at Owen Stadium, the carillion on the campus would play "Men of Harlech." It was great to hear that music!
