    Those 3 sailors sound like the Beausangs of Newfoundland. One of them ended up in Ballycotton Ireland. Ellen Beausang was my GG grandmother. I think the Beausangs were boat builders from Brittany.

      Btw.. there was a tv docu by a german "adventurer" who made such a sailing trip across the atlantic like in this song. Greenland (Upernarvik), Nova Scotia, Newfoundland (St. John's) , Ireland, Scotland back to Germany. This red wooden former danish fishing boat is moored in the harbour of my hometown. I've seen it many times.
      The owner of this ship, Arved Fuchs, is the first person together with Reinhold Messner who crossed the entire antarctic continent by skiing and by that he also was the first person to get to the Northpole and the Southpole by foot within the same year. His docus often are on tv around christmas.
      So greetings to Newfoundland! 🙋‍♂️

      Now that I'm reading the lyrics, I'm surprised I didn't get "Douar Nevez" (Newfoundland). It's so similar to "Daear Newydd" (Welsh for "New Earth")!

      I am learning Breton & Welsh and the other 4 modern Celtic languages, and I actually noticed lots of cognates that look quite similar, and knowing the Welsh word helps a lot, because it’s not easy to find vocab videos teaching Breton, so sometimes I can easily figure out the meaning of a new Breton word if it is very similar to the Welsh word - I am also learning Dutch and Old Norse and Norwegian (and many other pretty languages) and, I also noticed lots of similarities between these languages and Breton / Welsh!

    Its both catchy and very pretty. If you look at Nordic seaman folk like Krummavisur or Regin Smidur its much less pretty and more droning. Like the sound of a taglharpa I guess. I assume the more lyrical harp is more of an important instrument to bretons.

    Κει δίπλα στο πετρόμυλο
    την άγκυρα τους ρίξανε

    Στο μύλο τούτο
    βρίσκονταν μια παρακόρη δούλα

    Πούθε να σ’ έχω πριν γνωρίσει ;
    εκείνη με ρωτά

    Στην αγορά της Νάντης
    μαζί διαλέξαμε τη βέρα

    Τη βέρα που τους όρκους δώσαμε
    σαν ήτανε να παντρευτούμε

    Το γάμο να τον κάμουμε
    και τίποτ’ ας μη κατέχουμε ;

    Κυρά, όλα στρωμένα τα ‘χετε
    και τίποτα δεν ξέρετε για όποιον ζη στη χρεία

    Που ούτε στέγη έχουμε μα ούτε και στρωμνή
    ούτε κι ένα κρεβάτι τη νύχτα ν’ αποκάμουμε

    Μήτε σεντόνια κι ένα σκέπασμα
    ούτε ένα πάπλωμα κάτ’ απ’ την κεφαλή μας

    Κι ούτε γαβάθα με κουτάλα
    ούτε κι αλεύρι για ψωμί

    Ωσάν την πέρδικα
    χάμω θα κοιμηθούμε

    Και σαν το μπεκατσίνι
    ο ήλιος σα σηκώνεται θα φύγουμε γι αλλού

    Ετούτο το τραγούδι μου εδώθε τελειώνει
    και όποιος δύναται και ξέρει, καλώς να συνεχίσει
    Η μετάφραση έγινε από την αντίστοιχη γαλλική.
    Ένα χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα της μουσικής παράδοσης της κελτικής Βρετάνης. Περιοχή που μαζί με τη Γαλικία και τις Αστούριες των βόρειων ακτών της Ισπανίας, μέρος της παράκτιας Βαλλονίας, την Ουαλία, τη Σκωτία και την Ιρλανδία απαρτίζουν το τόξο των χωρών των Κελτών, όπως διαμορφώθηκε τους τελευταίους αιώνες
    Με τον ιδιότυπο πολιτισμό τους που χάνεται στα βάθη του χρόνου και τη μουσική τους που έχει δώσει μοναδικά δείγματα σκοπών και μουσικών "τρόπων", οι οποίοι μέχρι σήμερα μας καθηλώνουν. Με τόσους καταπληκτικούς "μουσικανθρώπους" όπως ο σύγχρονος Yann Tiersen και η Nolwenn Leroy.
    Το παραπάνω τραγούδι ιστορεί το παρελθόν μετανάστευσης απ' τα φτωχά μέρη των Κελτών στις ανατολικές ακτές της Αμερικανικής ηπείρου, όπως η Νέα Γη του Καναδά.

      Breton (Brezhoneg) is a Celtic language more closely related to Welsh than Irish or Scots Gaelic. It, was like the, the British Celtic languages, treated with contempt until recently but is now undergoing to a revival.

      Fat majority of people who speak Breton probably speak French more often, so I'm guessing they don't speak it with the "pure" accent.

      @nicolettileo Рік тому +4

      Breton is closer to Welsh, since the Bretons moved from romanized Britain during the collapse of the Roman empire, fleeing the Anglo-saxon invasions. Unfortunately, apart from a specific touch on the romance French language, the old Gaulish language is completely extinct.

    Are Brenton and French two separate languages and people?

    • @michaelhalsall5684
      @michaelhalsall5684 3 роки тому +14

      The Bretons are descendants of British Celts who migrated to France in the early Middle Age, hence "Brittany" Breton is a Celtic language and French is a Romance (Latin derived) language, quite different from each other. Brittany is a region of France nowadays and most Bretons can speak French.
