- Hey ho! Welcome to part eight of the 1/48 MPC Space: 1999 22-inch Eagle Transporter build! In this episode I realise that RUBBISH OCTOBER WEATHER means I can't rely on rattle-can painting and have to spend a few days slaving over a hot airbrush to get the model primed, base-coloured, glossed and be-decalled. Also, the minute I finished all that, the weather went warm and sunny. DAMMIT.

This is still the definitive 1/48th Eagle build on UA-cam, it's entertaining to watch and it's full of pertinent tips.
It's also a beautiful finished model.
Why, thank you :)
'Misty Coats' sounds like a 60s Bond Girl.
ROFL :D
Besutiful
Thank you :)
The title sequence made me die!! Brilliant! 😂😂
ha ha glad you liked it :)
One of my favorite shows and love the models - glad I found this...great skill - thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it ^_^
Love the singing...lol 👍😎
Looks outstanding!!! I got the standard kit am having to paint the gray squares . Look forward to the next video.
Ah yes, thankfully I was able to avoid that ^_^
good health to you my emglishe friend. let me pass you up, all of you fellow. sorry my english is a little crazy. do not stress, not even a little! i think you make a very nice job to this model, you have much skill. i like space 1999 show so very nice, it is full of action and excite! here in estonia, show is call 'modern space action'. i do not know why this should be.
Ha ha, we would call it "science fiction", or, because it is an old show and a bit silly compared to modern shows, "old and cheesy science fiction" ^_^
Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it :)
Really nice build sir. Love your enthusiasm for the build. I might get the kit from emodels next time I put in me order. Merry Christmas to all at emodels and the treehouse. And a happy new year. Sorry, I suffer from premature celabrations.
Welcome to 2020!
What, too early?
It's worth picking up, it is a lovely kit. Of course, only the Special Edition comes with all the panelling decals, so you'll have a choice there as to which kit to go for )the kit itself is the same IIRC) ^_^
Good day, MMG! What an amazing series of videos!! An absolute master class, and utterly invaluable for someone exactly like me!!
I was gifted this set and have (after MANY years) decided to try my hand at doing a model, so I'm very grateful to have such a comprehensive, informative guide. I'm now watching the whole series for a second time, and (since I'm starting from, essentially zero) trying to extract a shopping list.
Most of the order (tool kit, sanding supplies, brushes and hand paints) will come from eModels. (I contacted their customer service, and promptly heard back from James, who seems awesome!)
Quick noob question about primer -- all the black primer I see for sale on a local site (I'm in Kyiv, and eModels can't ship explosive aerosols) is gloss finish. The black primer you've used looks matte to my (admittedly untrained) eye.
I can quite easily buy 400 ml rattle cans of Vallejo white primer. Is that a good idea, or should I try to track down cans of matte black primer or go big and buy an airbrush / compressor so I can use the exact same primer as you've done (which I can find on eModels and order)?
Hi Bob! I think for such a big, expensive kit it might be worth splurging on an airbrush set up - that way you can get an awesome paint finish and copy my method of spraying a tan colour under the white (that's the vital step - not doing that and spraying white directly over black will leave your whites looking blue, and whites over a white primer just look too stark and bright). And finding a tan rattle can will be even harder than just a black primer rattlecan! You will also need an airbrush anyway to spray on any fine grimes and dust colours for subtle weathering and shading at the end.
However, yes, the primer is matte on the majority of the model -I never use gloss primers unless they are specifically needed i.e. for metallics like on the thruster bells where I used the UMP gloss black )so get some of that too if they have it).
BTW if you cannotr find a UMP product on the eModels site, you can get them direct from the UMP website: www.umpretail.com/
In terms of rattlecans. if you wanted to go that way, as Tamiya don't do a black primer (which is a pain in the ass because their primers are really nice) you can always see if you can snag some Citadel black primer (which is also very nice) directly through the Games Workshop website or though a local retailer or online store or Amazon, perhaps. Sadly I think your nearest actual Warhammer bricks and mortar store is in Poland lol. I don't recommend automotive rattle-cans as they are not always actual primers and are not designed with preserving fine detail in mind. Downside of rattlecanning it is like I said, you would also then need to find a warm neutral tan colour rattlecan AND a white rattlecan so you have just multiplied the problem by three times lol. And if you sprayed a white primer, not only would you have no way to do any pre-shading or dust weathering and post-shading if you wanted to (those require an airbrush), but also you might have trouble telling which white bits are primer and which white bits are paint, lol.
@@gurufoxx Awesome!
Lots to think about. Thank you so much for the quick, detailed response.
It's so fantastic that experts like yourself are willing to offer guidance to those of us just starting out.
As a teacher (I work at an international school) I have to say, your videos are phenomenal lessons -- packed with excellent info, relevant insight, and a generous helping of humour as well. Clearly, you're not just passionate about modelling, but about building a community.
I'll digest what you've said here, and let you know what I come up with. I priced airbrush setups, and -- while they're not insanely expensive -- the cost is a bit of a stop-and-think sign. I just got a line on a couple of local hobby shops, and will see if I can make contact through the language barrier and with the current lockdown process under way.
Again, thanks so much for the time, care and attention.
@@bobhume2087 No worries, any time, and good luck ^_^
Hello,
Another question, when you put the white paint Tamiya XF2 on the Tamiya XF-55 on the entire model, let you appear a little of the Tamiya XF-55 or not. What proportion do you put between the Tamiya paint and its thinner. Thank you again for your answer. I love what you do, too bad that my English is null.
When you thin a paint for airbrushing, don't worry about exact ratios of paint to thinner because it can be different from one paint to another - judge everything by eye. You want to make sure the paint is about as thick as skimmed milk, that should allow it ti spray nicely :)
Hey Foxx, love your videos, just about to begin my Bandai PG Millennium Falcon & found your video series on this model unbelievably helpful. Now back to the Space 1999 : Transporter, I've just purchased this exact kit myself & just wanted to ask why did you use black primer? Why not white primer? I missed a part of your video edition 8 & wondered why go to the trouble of using Tamiya XF55 then XF2.......... keep up the awesome work.
Hi Paul! Two reason really - firstly spraying white paint over white primers makes it impossible to see where you have missed - as it is all white! Secondly, having a warm colour underneath the white (the tan colour) meant that the white paint would inherit a warmer hue - painting white over white (or over black) can leave you with a cold, blue-tinted white, and I did not want that. You could just use a primer that is already a warm colour like a tan, but I only had black and white primers so had to add that extra tan layer between the primer and the paint :)
@@gurufoxx Thanks Foxx for your reply, very informative as always. Looking forward to receiving my Space 1999 : Eagle Transporter kit however, after watching your shenanigans with the spine & all the rods, so funny to watch, I'm not looking forward to that part of the build ha ha ha. Have a great weekend. Paul 😎
Thanks very much for this series, as a novice modeller about to embark on this model, it's proving invaluable! It seems the much touted Pledge Floor Care Finish (2x more shiiiiine) is no more, is there a contemporary equivalent?
Don't panic, it changes name ALL THE DAMN TIME (it is very frustrating) and also has different names in different countries. I think the latest name was Pledge Revive It, but the only way to tell you have the right product is to check the formula number on the label (often on the inside) - it should show formula number #35*3597 - this has never changed in the past no matter how many new names the product gets :)
@@gurufoxx Ahaaaa! That's enormously helpful, thanks very much!
Sisyphus: my, my, we can all learn from Greek Mythology
^_^
Why do you keep reuploading videos? I see it in my list and think 'Yay, new video.' Then it turns out to be one I've already watched...
I'm guessing you're seeing one on his channel and one on eModels channel...
They go up first on emodels.
The videos are made for emodels, so it goes up first on their channel for a few days and then goes up on mine, so I can get the benefit of the video too :)
Must be a UA-cam derp then, it's not surprising. These videos only show up as being on this channel for me for some reason.
WAIT WHAT something on UA-cam not working prroperly? GASP! NURSE! THE SCREENS! ;)
