Around 15 years ago, took a stab at the theory of "L is Real 2401" that went more into context of the game. After a little "artistic rendition" of the text, I came to the conclusion that it was likely the grave (or memorial) of Peach's father (or possibly parents) which was defaced by Bowser OR heavily worn for some reason. The text would have originally read "Toadstool 1981"... which would also provide SOME CONTEXT for the Boo's hiding out there (ghosts would likely hang out around where they died or around other dead entities). It may not be perfectly accurate, but it would fit reasonably well within the game lore & could potentially be part of the canon with Peach & the castle. That's just my 0.02 MB on this.
I have always wondered if it could possibly be a memorial for Peach's parents!! I mean, "Eternal Star" makes a lot of sense considering it's a star statue, but "Toadstool 1981" certainly isn't far fetched, either.

I just want to bring up real quick that in the recent Super Mario 64 source code leak, Luigi has been found in the files. It’s been 24 years and 1 month between the release Mario 64, and the source code leak. 2401. That is such a funny coincidence I gotta say.
Considering it says eternal star and it is obviously a statue of a star that wouldn't make any sense. Only an idiot would look at the statue of a star and read the inscription on it as L is real and a number.

I think is japanese writing. I tried to replicate the characters and it says: Over the castle roof. maybe it is, maybe not, but to think that Yoshi is on top of the castle, waiting for the player... As a kid, I always thought that the plaque was scratched
I don't think that was ever a rumor that a sizeable amount of people believed in or even knew about. At that point in time, people had started disassembling games as soon as they came out.
Eddie when I was much younger I was curious about it, and I tried some pretty elaborate things to unlock Waluigi. Maybe I’ve distorted this memory but I vaguely recall seeing someone with the game that had Waluigi and peach unlocked far before I played the game myself. Maybe these things are possible through hacking, but I know first hand that it’s impossible to achieve that through standard game play. I’ve basically done everything short of game breaking or glitches with SM64DS, so I don’t really play it anymore.
Since I'm here early, I'd like to point out a tidbit about the plaque I've always loved since reading it over a decade back. "When the great one's remains see red, a new path will be revealed" The appearance of the sign in Dodongo's Cavern, with a bit of imagination, can actually match a potential meaning with Mario 64's version. The connection comes from the Big Boo in the courtyard and the giant dead Dodongo in Dodongo's cavern. To progress from either, you must defeat the Big Boo and bomb the Dodongo skull's eyes respectively. Obviously, the exceptionally large dead creature remains (with some in-tact spirit) is obvious, but the real kicker to me is the "sees red" connection. When bombs explode in the Dodongo skull's eyes, it shows red as a symbol that something was activated. When the Big Boo in the courtyard sees Mario, the player gets a glimpse of a unique object that turns out to be a level entrance as the Boo tries to hid by turning invisible. Thus, the quote I put at the beginning of the comment to clickbait people. Iunno, I thought it was neat as a kid. Also some people interpret the second line as "In Paper M" and suggest that the 2 4 0 1/2 0 1 4 are original release dates for Mario Story/Paper Mario, but that theory probably has a ton of holes. Anyway, good video as usual, even if it was only a really light romp.
I remember one time a friend at school said “if you collect 64 coins then restart the whole game. Stand in front of the star for 24 hours you will get luigi” I tried it and was so pissed because I had to leave the game on for 24 hours without being able to play anything else,
I'm pretty sure it's just the regular text font in 64? But the quality on the sign is so horrible that it's hard to tell. At 4:32 A lot of the ''letters'' in L is for real start to look different, for example, the L in real starts to look more like an apostrophe. The L at the beginning also begins to look like the perpendicular sign.
That would have been awesome! You could have had to fly or blast up there and, true to classic Mario form, rescue the princess and bring her out of the dungeon. Nice!
I love how, despite not having social media, or even internet access, ALL of us as kids had the same story. It's crazy how just one person talking to someone can spread like wildfire.
N The evidence is that L is real was some bullshit rumor some playground children made up and it spread like wildfire. The text is actually placeholder Japanese. It reads something along the lines of ‘Upper text, bottom text’.
I got baited into this rumor when I was young playing the DS version of Mario 64. I knew Luigi was real in that game, however I thought the whole "L is Real" stuff was the way to unlock him.
I have really proplems watching your videos because the orange frame. I feel uneasy and have a strange claustrophobic feeling, never ever had something like this.
@@thethrashyone Don't forget "unlock Koopa in Super Smash Bros." I swear I used to get on a cheat website that ended up merging with GamesRadar, but I can't remember what it was called.
My experience with "L is real:" I never looked at that statue for even a moment. And the thought of anyone stopping to do that when there are a bunch of ghosts flying around baffles me.
I used it when I was little to find the gang of kids hiding in majoras mask. I literally heard the lady flipping through pages to tell me where to find the kids in the game of hide and seek.
luigi never made it into Super Mario 64, he was removed entirely from the game so the game had more power for complex landscapes etc. it was talked about this in the beta of super mario 64 of Beta 64
This was the ultimate game to get immersed in because it contained so little and so much at the same time... it was a sandbox where you had to make up your own fun like this since it wasn't big on story. I mean, I don't take the '98 letter as closure in any way... we still want to know what it says, so there is good potential this will never be solved, but who knows; Miyamoto did confirm recently that Mario 3 is a play, so there is the chance. Your channel rocks.
I'd still like an explanation for why that black square hole on the castle in the cover was there. Even if it was just cut content, what did it do? Where did it lead?
Years later, in Super Mario Odyssey, you could play as not only Mario and Luigi, but literally everything from a goomba to a rock. Nintendo has finally given us what we wanted.
Luigi is in the source code's files. They were recently dumped today, meaning that, yes, L is real (2401.) The statue does say "Eternal Star" from my guess, and is nothing related to the myth. People are piecing him together as I type.
My experience is I walked up to the star statue and when I clicked RB + LB 10 times really quick you won’t believe what happened 😱😱😱🍆 Absolutely nothing
Another mystery is Waluigi in the Super Mario 64 remake on the DS. You can play as Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario. In the minigame room, you can see different colors on the floor resembling the characters and the purple color was added there. Red for Mario, Yellow for Wario, Green for Luigi/Yoshi. And Purple?! Waluigi obviously! Yet he was never in the game! I used to try everything thinking he can somehow secretly be unlocked. Gotten all stars, searched the castle+outside for hours, etc. Nothing. Not to mention the mysterious ghost door in the same room as the character selection! I used to try getting in constantly. Thought "Oh maybe this is how you unlock Waluigi?" or maybe through Luigi's casino minigames?! I tried everything lol
I was playing once I knew about this theory at the time, i was 8. I was going to the statue. I tried to read the message but I then I turned around and I swear I saw something that was maybe related to Luigi. It was an extra shadow, there was actually no Boos around do it couldn't have been them. I screamed and showed my younger cousin. Then he saw it too. That's what we saw and we are still talking about it.
And make dramatic essays about it.cant wait to develope my first game have a scribble of text on a random floor tile and in 30 years some guy I gonna hype it up
Since the message is on a star statue, and some people read it as “eternal star” I feel like it was supposed to say that, but people got confused when the “e” in eternal was too far away from the rest of the word. The Nintendo employee that answered the question might have been lying in some way or another to keep people playing the game and trying things to unlock Luigi, but what do I know?
I remember this. As a little kid, I didnt think it had any significance. I just thought it was a cool little courtyard with some Boo's in it. I miss those early days of gaming
It would make more sense as Eternal Star since it's a STAR STATUE but being that in ocarina its also there and there's no star it could be just a jumble of text Edit: I looked back at the slightly higher res version in OOT and it definitely says Eternal Star
I remember trying to figure out how to unlock Waluigi in the NDS version of Mario 64 since you could play as Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi. So many rumors about that one as well. And most of them related to the Eternal Star too.
The message looks like Kana. The last "word" on the first line appears to start with the Katakana characters "ko do", which is transliterated from the English word "code".
Imagine being the texture artist who just scribbled some shit onto a marble plaque and seeing all this happen
"Alright, Well, here you go. My 240x80 plaque for the star statue"
"Woah woah? Where did you get those 0s? There must've been a miscommunication"

Interesting.
Eternal Star. Not any of this L is real nonsense.

Assuming the plaque does have English text on it, knowing which font was used would be helpful.

Another thing, why was Peach’s painting on the front of the castle not a secret level accessible by using the canon after getting 120 stars?
That was Peach’s way of friend zoning Mario real hard. 🤣
That would have been so cool.
Presumably its because it is where she was actually sealed. I guess similar to the Sages in ALBW.
That would have been awesome! You could have had to fly or blast up there and, true to classic Mario form, rescue the princess and bring her out of the dungeon. Nice!
I think it's suppose to be painted glass

Uhh you didn't actually mention any new evidence to solving the mystery like you said in the description...
N The evidence is that L is real was some bullshit rumor some playground children made up and it spread like wildfire. The text is actually placeholder Japanese. It reads something along the lines of ‘Upper text, bottom text’.

HOLY SHIT
O
The only thing i know since i was a kid , i finished the game with FULL STARS and i unlocked YOSHI at the top of the castle.
Your channel rocks.
everytime i look at the "L is Real" statue, i always read it as "L fmf reel"
Same thing for me but with the DS version and Waluigi.

THE L IS REAL TWENTY FOUR YEARS AND ONE MONTH LATER 2401
Personally, I was obsessed with waluigi in super Mario 64 DS
I'd still like an explanation for why that black square hole on the castle in the cover was there. Even if it was just cut content, what did it do? Where did it lead?
GASP!!! A CLUE
(Yeah, I thought so too)
The plaque actually says Eternal Star referring to the star statue.
Damn, are you having the same feed as mine or what??
No, it's a referrence to the final stage of Mario Party 1
imagine there was a way to unlock luigi but nintendo forgot how so they added "l is real" so people can try to find it
Lol
If they forgot then in its up to us! To find the Way! Lol
And so he was found.
This and the running man were the two biggest mysteries for me when I was a kid.
The source code for mario 64 has been leaked, luigis model has been found.
L IS REAL 2401
Well, well, well.
L IS REAL!!!!!
Years later, in Super Mario Odyssey, you could play as not only Mario and Luigi, but literally everything from a goomba to a rock.
Nintendo has finally given us what we wanted.
But you can't play as Luigi in Odyssey unless you mod the game. You can wear his outfit, but it's not the same
I just wanted Waluigi on Mario 64 DS. lmao, the statue didn't concern me.
The letter: L isnt real, its just a joke
Luigi: *say sike right now*
Luigi is in the source code's files. They were recently dumped today, meaning that, yes, L is real (2401.) The statue does say "Eternal Star" from my guess, and is nothing related to the myth. People are piecing him together as I type.
My experience is I walked up to the star statue and when I clicked RB + LB 10 times really quick you won’t believe what happened 😱😱😱🍆
Absolutely nothing
That's why luigi does not exist
He's doing absolutely nothing to get in.
Luigy is a myth. Me :Laughs at 2020
Another mystery is Waluigi in the Super Mario 64 remake on the DS.
*Swanky:* This would never be replicated.
*Later...*

BRO L IS FRICKING REAL
Against all odds, L was real 24 years and 1 month later
Nintendo's greatest mystery!!!!
Developers used a spare sprite as decoration and fans looked too deep into it.
That's what we do :)
It’s been a year later, and L has been found. 24 years and 1 month later after initial release
L WAS Real 2401

SwankyBox Sentence Structure:
Blah blah blah, blah blah bleeeehhhhh.
That's really rude to the youtuber.
It would make more sense as Eternal Star since it's a STAR STATUE but being that in ocarina its also there and there's no star it could be just a jumble of text
Edit: I looked back at the slightly higher res version in OOT and it definitely says Eternal Star
Some people said it says “upper text, bottom text” or something in Japanese or Korean.
I didn’t have to worry about is L real cuz I played Mario 64 DS lmao
But what about that giant rumor with Waluigi and the Purple Prizes?
I remember trying to figure out how to unlock Waluigi in the NDS version of Mario 64 since you could play as Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi. So many rumors about that one as well. And most of them related to the Eternal Star too.
They did it, The absolute madlads did it. They found Luigi 24 years and 1 month after SM64's release date. L is real 2401
The message looks like Kana. The last "word" on the first line appears to start with the Katakana characters "ko do", which is transliterated from the English word "code".
