L is Real 2401 is a gaming mystery many of us will never forget. It was by far the biggest conundrum in Super Mario 64... Could Luigi be unlocked? And if so, how? Due to no further information, this mystery perpetuated for years... But back in 1996 there was actually one piece of documentation that would have stopped the hunt immediately. Unfortunately for us, it was inaccessible. This is the full story of Luigi's disappearance from Super Mario 64...

One of the reasons why I think it took so long for these translations to come about is simply that the original guidebooks were essentially lost in time. They are still out there, but TONS of versions have been released in Japanese. Some official, some not. So if anyone was looking up a guidebook to get now, and if Japanese isn't your primary language, you wouldn't know which one to grab. So the two original versions containing these interviews were buried among all the new versions that came out once the game exploded in popularity. These interviews were not included in the versions we got in the USA... Which would have stopped L is Real 2401 immediately. Although I've stated we were trapped in a bubble - a close circle of friends at school to circulate rumors, the truth is, the USA was in its own giant bubble and we had no idea.
I must say.... Mario kicked Luigi out so Luigi did the same with Mario XD and they couldn't put Luigi in because Nintendo can't handle his power ;D

@@krisskrosssss There was a huge leak of Nintendo data. In the data was original Mario 64 source code and assets. Within those, Luigi's model and textures were found, meaning he was actually in the game all along, albeit not playable.
@@DannyB587 Not in the final game. The assets are from a proto, not the final as otherwise they would have already been found. We already knew Luigi is in a proto. It's still an interesting new discovery (though of all the things found Luigi is probably the least interesting), but it doesn't reveal anything about Luigi's presence in the game we didn't know about before.

I remember the time when this rumour of Luigi was a hot topic. I didn't expect him to actually be a part of Mario 64 even if it has only been during the development phase. Even though they stated the split screen mode was removed due to hardware there should have at least been a way to unlock him and play instead of Mario. I'm really curious if beta Luigi would have played different than his brother.

@@notyepdranel961 If you're referring to 4:45, Mario Bros. is the game where Mario and Luigi compete/work together to defeat crabs, bugs, and turtles in a sewer. If you mean SMB1, it's the one where Luigi is an alternate skin of Mario. Luigi didn't really become slippery until SMB2 (Doki Doki Panic in Japan).

It's very interesting how parallel Super Mario 64 and Luigi's Mansion are with the Rumors of playable characters.

Both games seemed at one point or another intended to have a Co-op mode that never came to be until modders starting digging.

The original was a bit too old for me, but I remember trying all sorts of crazy things to unlock Waluigi in the DS version.

dean Actually. Something I noticed in a video of the beta for Mario 64 Ds (you know, Super Mario 64 X4) when Mario is running around the castle, the 2D Black Box is present IN GAME on the side of the castle. Idk, seems very suspicious to me.
The square box was probably an entrance to a scrapped level. There were enough fake pictures online to make me believe that's how you unlocked Waluigi, though.

This video and the events and discoveries it covers really seal up all the L is Real rumors and theories. Just knowing that a second player would’ve been present as the code shows, and how the idea was scrapped just 4 months before release gives me some mixed feelings.
It shows that we were indeed all sort of correct about the whole L is Real thing, but it’s also sad that we were so close to actually getting Luigi.

When I was very young playing this game, this mystery made me go on the internet and search for how to unlock Luigi. Unfortunately, the video I chose to watch walked you through meaningless steps then ended with a jumpscare of a green zombie man. I was scared away from the game for a while. These videos sure do bring back good memories!

So Nintendo were like 'we couldn't get Yoshi to work, but we didn't want to remove him as we put a bunch of work into him, so we repurposed him' but also 'we had Luigi in the game all the way up until several months before release, but couldn't get 2 player mode to work so we destroyed 99.9% of all evidence of him'
Also, is this to say that Luigi was in the Spaceworld Demo ROM? I really hope it surfaces soon so we can find out (plus many more mysteries)
This my main issue. If a model for Mario in the original Luigi’s Mansion could be dug up from the game files from when he was supposed to be playable then why do we not have a model for Luigi in the game files of SM64 especially since he was IN the game and just removed 4 months prior to release?! It makes no sense for there to be no character model for Luigi in the games code for SM64. I just want to see how he was supposed to look in the original SM64. But sadly we'll probably never know
The thing is, Mario 64 was among the very first N64 games ever made. Fresh from SNES, which had VERY limited cartridge space. They may have done some test dumps to cartridges during production, and were worried about space being an issue, so a quick way to alleviate the worry would be to delete unused objects and code.
Only early EP-ROMs from those tests may contain more Luigi code in them, but that'd be a miracle, as I'm sure Nintendo would be watching all property with their flagship mascot like a hawk.
But yeah, leaving unused data on N64 cartridges, and later on future technology, likely happened more later, when the programmers felt more sure about how much space they could spare. It just stands to reason that with early creations, especially since the hardware was still being developed alongside the software... that they would be a lot more conservative of file sizes.

@@marksmithwas12 , the N64 had already gone through a lot of release date shuffles, if I learned right, so they might have had a change necessitating the launch titles be hurried out the door with it.
And even whether that was a factor or not, Luigi's entire system (commands, camera code, running the split screen, memory management, implementation, etc), would have taken a HECK of a lot more space than just some models and motion cycles.

I mean maybe? All I can think of is code for a separate HUD, the possibility of L and M icons for who collected what star on the file stats screen, interaction data between Mario & Luigi, cutscene control independent for each character (as well as the models, animations and textures for Luigi). But I'd imagine that would've been more hassle than it was worth to remove that? Oh yeah, I suppose voices would have been a bit excessive too

When I was a kid I didn't know about the "L is real thing" but for some reason I still associated that statue with Luigi. I remember making up stupid stuff when playing games with my sisters or cousins watching. Because there were Boos back there I told my family members who watched me play that it was Luigi's grave 😂 and that the ghost who waits in the hallway was Luigi haunting me.

If/When Nintendo decides to do a N64 style of playing the NES/SNES games on Switch, they should re-incorporate Luigi as a playable character for SM64, whether it be for online play or local co-op. I think that would be the closest thing fans could get for Luigi existing in Mario 64.

Man, the whole "L is Real" saga is one of the most beautiful game myths ever. Especially with the information we got about Luigi's planned inclusion. I don't know how to describe it, all the various aspects, the mystery, just make it this beautiful little thing, and I don't think it can be truly replicated. I'm mostly curious about the single-camera version.
I always think back to Toejam & Earl 3 - and how it would literally split the screen in 2 if you got too far away from one another, but if you came close, the cameras recombined into one.
That sort of camera would be amazing for this game.
