i love how he shows the intensity in which the moves might actually work. so many tutorials show the move too slow and with not enough resistance. I like the sharpness and explosiveness he always implements
Who else remembers that classic elbow push escape video from years ago!!? That was one of the first bjj videos that really helped me through my initial stages as a white belt getting trapped under people! I remember I hit that escape on a purple belt in a different country, and he smiled and said “ah, you’ve watched that Marcelo Garcia escape video” and we both had a chuckle.
Just started training again and having a ridiculous hard time to escape side control. It's so frustrating, when im on top, ppl just roll me around, bench me up, do whatever they want, it's like im a feather. When im on the bottom, its like a building is on top of me and i have no strength to create any space with any of the arms. Their arm pits are stronger than my fucking legs so i cant create hip space either. Its a boomer man
Bruno Soares Rodrigues I like to use a philosophy I call strong point philosophy. I’m like 140 lbs but when big guys pass my guard, this just means that you analyze and figure out what grips or limbs are the ones giving the opponent the strength to close distance or the base so they don’t get rolled over. A pyramid will always fall if at least two sides get knocked down, humans are like that in the sense we have four limbs. Just go for the points/grips of strength or points that allows them to keep a base and remove them using leverage, be creative and keep putting yourself in those bad positions. It might take some time to develop the sequence of moves but eventually you’ll start seeing them sooner and being more deceiving with them and should be able to get out of these positions. I’ve been able to do so now with guys near the 240lbs weight on me, it wasn’t always the case and more so if they move to different positions, but one day at a time brother. Hope this was of some help, good luck in your journey!
Thank you for this ! I really struggle with side control especially bigger opponents that I face ..but the rocking back and forth I think is a game changer for me and I have you to thank for that ❤
@@AV9000x LOL!!! I once rolled with a big blue belt who said he felt he could pin Marcelo Garcia forever in side control because he was strong and he never saw Marcelo play a lot of half guard from being in side control. The blue belt was admittedly big and strong, but only weightlifting strong, not grappling strong. It seems he could never develop the connection to use all that muscle towards grappling techniques. So I choked his bitch ass with my feeble 150lbs.
Whenever I get into a bad position like being mounted, back taken, pinned and face a opponent with the same skill level I find it impossible to apply any techniques to reduce the risk of submition any body else feel the same?
I found that I was panicking when being mounted and pressure being put on my chest and my face smothered a bit. So I picked the biggest guys and when put in mount during a roll I concentrate on getting used to tight spaces with not much air or room to move. I find now I am more relaxed to work my moves.
when you get to the end move, when you are behind him like at 4:20, maybe getting up on your feet and one arm around the waist and wrestle him down would be better?
Im picking up jiujitsu really fast as a former wrestler but my worst position is side control. I can frame, hip escape and explode up but I want to focus on recovering guard and not exposing my back.
I think you should of explained the importance of transitioning your hand/forearm from his back to under his chin better than just saying "it needs to be strong infront of his face" - the guys head and body weight will be stronger than your forearm. One suggestion that my black belt coach taught me was to bridge towards the guy to create a small gap to transition your hands/forearm from the back to under his throat. Otherwise you run the risk of getting americana'd, especially if the guy is in a static position, quick and putting alot of pressure on you. However, good video nonetheless, the single leg is actually one of my favourite escapes.
I think Marcelo knows what does and doesn't work under pressure lol. He's won matches at world championships against much larger opponents and BJJ legends like Andre Galvao, Robert Drysdale, and Alexandre Ribiero

So, need to take a moment and say... THANK YOU MARCELO! You don’t know me and probably will never meet me, but you’ve helped my game so much!
That's a great story. Bjj is great

I got my back taken many times as a white belt doing that escape wrong. 🤣🤣🤣
I appreciate that he's not using the Gi. So this works for No Gi as well.
Most escapes don't involve the gi.
i left gi jiu jitsu for no gi...its more effective and practical...
@Brendan Clune Why would they? I'd love to know..
@@M.Kamraan In gi and no gi you will develop different type of skills, if possible you should train both.
@@guilhermemrdeath Will look into it... Thanks for the Tip👍🏼
I haven't done jiu-jitsu in 8 years, but I still love to watch the Marcelo explain all the details of jiu-jitsu techniques!!
What an awesome teacher!
get back in there! your jj friends miss you
Why did you stop?
Go back dude. I just started after 4 years of not doing it. It’s the best!
Go back pal
Marcelo will go down as one of the greatest of all time

Never seen a coach’s belt come off demonstrating a technique. Awesome stuff.
You can tell Marcelo's brain is working way faster than he can explain

thank you so much for this Professor. I'm really new to BJJ and I felt that there's so much details about the fundamentals that I need to learn
great info. As a white belt, I am always finding myself having to figure things out from the bottom. Will be putting this to use asap!
There is a 110 kg guy in my gym, that I test all these escape on. Sometimes it works , sometimes I get crushed but I'm still perfecting.
These escapes are terrible inefficient. Switch to something that works, always.
@@k9prtrWhat escape would do you consider efficient? Marcelo was a high level competitor so I doubt he would want to waste energy for no reason.
This was a good reply lol.
Remember, it's not his fault he's 110kg and he pays to go that gym too.
Every few weeks I'll remember how dumb that guys comment is and have a good laugh@@michaelmeissner9371
As a whit belt, this video has helped my game SO MUCH.
I'll take this little bit of information to today's class-wish me luck!!
So funny, that’s what I always say and then forget it in first second of rolling and then need to go back and watch video another 20 times..

Amazing 💯
1 stripe blue belt here and and I still feel so uncomfortable in bottom side control. Thank you Professor, I will try this in class tomorrow.
Being in side control sucks. For everyone.
If side control didn't suck it wouldn't be considered a dominant position.
@The Tide Rises up to a point, sure.
Excellent detail!
Excellent!

Professor, could you please explain exits when the opponent lowers the hip?
when you get to the end move, when you are behind him like at 4:20, maybe getting up on your feet and one arm around the waist and wrestle him down would be better?
Extra movement. Letting the action come all the way up, just to get back down. But I guess if you really trust your wrestling, that might be the move.

This exposes you to arm attacks way too much and is terribly inefficient. Danaher's v-shape elbow escape is much superior.
