I consider him a real brother of our sport and admire him and his accomplishments and his approach in life. He/Jacare/Roger and only few others I never faced in competition. Such motivation watching him !
Dean, in one of your king of the cage matches you went from a triangle to armbar, I watched it and copied that sequence and hit that when my old coach Javi Vasquez was watching it got me my blue belt! Back in 06! Thank you
This is how good MG is. He knew the footlock was there but was willing to play "fair" jiu jitsu with the bigger guy until he got pissed. It was as if he thought, "ok so you want to play dirty." Freaking incredible
Tremendous. With the absolute monsters at Alliance to roll with 50 hours a week, you are ready for any grappler alive. His "bjj strength" is ridiculous. I was surprised on how well Diego did at the time, gas for days. Great compilation once again Riccardo 👏 👌
Man I'm surprised he didn't twist Rico's knee ALL the way off. If a dude slammed me like that and I had a solid heel hook in place after, then said dude is getting every ft/lb of torque I can give. Props to Marcelo for his restraint.
I like Xande Ribeiro, but the claim of "never having the guard passed" is a weak one. The reason being is that, for instance in this case, his guard was basically passed, but he just turtled up and has his back taken instead.
The whole idea of a guard pass is to pass the legs and hip line in order to pin your opponent’s back flat onto the floor. If you pass the legs but unable to pin them down, then it’s a job half done. So if your opponent turtles that means they have successfully escaped from getting pinned, thus your opponent has prevented the guard pass. If however you take their back then you could argue that you’ve achieved the “pin”. So technically isn’t completely wrong but it is a bit silly to brag about it given that turtle is still a positional concession.
Amazing performance by MG in 2005. In addition to his signature xguards, his 2005 game was heavy on armdrags and his passings were still a bit loose as he was primarily hunting for the back, like he did in Adcc 2003. He was still a couple of years away from developing his guillotines and NS chokes. But man, that sneaky wristlock against Popovitch of all people was insane.
A lot of people don't. He basically abandoned grappling once his coaches convinced him he was a striker. Which he could also do, but not at the level he could grapple. It's a shame really, grappling got him to the game and he was just one of those dudes that could basically be baited into a stand up war. And because he was tough as nails he's taken a lot of punishment over the years. 10-20 years from now at the most, and I bet he's gonna need a full time carer....THAT is the sad reality of it.
@@joenobody5913 he had awesome cardio too… imagine what he could have done in the ufc if he focussed on chain wrestling and mat control, like Bryce Mitchell now, or Khabib, or Maia. Very interesting. I just looked at his record, and he was actually undefeated until he fought 2x NCAA Div 1 wrestlers in a row. That had to have impacted his mindset.
Commenting for a 2nd time on this to say it deserves a lot more views. This will always be my favorite Marcelo performance, even though he had less success here in terms of hardware than 2007. I don't know...this one is just special.
Man just think he stopped competing right at the beginning of his prime, he’s the goat in imo and many more but just think of the records he could’ve amassed
😁Smh(with laughter & admiration)...while watching this...I can just imagine/hear all of Marcelo's opponents thinking: "Dude...why so serious, slow down; at least let me get some type of grip, or something, on you?! Gosh!" 🤣😂
That arm drag is a thing of utter beauty, Marcelo Garcia's jiu-jitsu is amazing wish I could've witnessed it live taking out all these monsters also who the heck threw that bottle at the end of his match with Ricco Rodriguez?
Dude that rib injury at 1:06 🫣 I tore a couple ribs off from sternum last summer fighting out of an armbar, I feel for that dude. Hopefully it wasn’t anything major.
I’ve gotta say I was really surprised by Diego Sanchez’s skills. I guess I never really realizes how good he was because I mostly knew him as a cage fighter.
Marcelo lost to Jacare in the absolute semifinal. If I recall correctly, Jacare tapped him with a Kimura. And Roger subbed Jacare in the absolute final with a standing RNC

It's easy to forget how good Diego Sanchez was. Some great escapes.
yeah he was very tough. legit grappler
still hasn't been submitted in mma
The Man, The Myth, THE LEGEND... Marcelo!

ha ha ha yup
My thought exactly. Didn’t even bother going going for the legs until he got pissed off. Once he did east catch
This is one of the greatest highlights I’ve ever seen-had no clue Diego Sanchez was grappling like this outside of the UFC
Marcelinho Garcia representa demais!

Thanks again so much for watching man
Diego proved that straight up heart and spazziness can work at the highest levels.
💪💪💪💪💪
People forget that Diego won state in wrestling and had competed against and beat high level black belts in various grappling competitions
Well he had just gotten slammed by that huge dude right before the Diego match as well
Great job putting this highlight reel together. Marcelo is pound for pound GOAT
Thanks so much for watching yeah he's the man

Not only that someone threw their water bottle at him after the match.
Full on Palhares’d him
Marcelo is a gentleman. That’s why he didn’t do it.
was looking for a comment along the lines of this.
I was fortunate enough to watch this event live, I believed it was the best grappling I had ever seen, then came along ADCC 2019 mind blowing
100% agree!
Marcelo a true gentleman of the sport very humble and respectful of his opponent
Lenda total, Marcelinho e brabo🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

If you can't control your opponent from moving past your hip line, your guard has been passed.
I kinda understand what you're saying, but according to the rules, his guard wasn't passed 🤷🏻♂️
i always thought the same but tecnically if you turtle before the points its not a pass
To pass someone’s guard you’ve got to control the position for three seconds

09.38 refs fucked up hard, its immediate dq
:(
@@RiccardoAmmendoliaBJJ otherwise highlights are great
Was falling backward intentionally when he was taken back position legal in ADCC? The ref just ignored it and let them restart tho😢
Still dont understand why Ricco wasnt DQ'd
Did someone throw a bottle at marcelo after the ricco fight?
Diego saenhez beat Marcelo?
why did they give him bronze in the absolute if he never lost?
He lost to the great Jacare Souza via kimura in the semis. The video skipped that loss and just showed the Bronze Medal match.
Why were people throwin bottles?!
They mad at the Ricco
what happend to that first guy? he was grabbing his ribs
looks like he popped a rib
