It's so cool watching him play. His grip makes him appear to have like no control, because of how relaxed and open his grip is, but he has the MOST insane control. So articulate. Amazing.
I've watched this a 1000 times, and will watch again. Porcaro, Gadd, Bonham, ....and IMHO Carlock is in that group.... Freakin guy is sick.... just sick
Me too! It's one of the craziest grooves ever. You're right, he is amongst the elite. The thing about this groove that has really melted my mind is his high-hat and how he uses it as such an integral part of the performance. I tried to figure out where it was landing within the other parts, but it just seems so random...blows me away!...and that bass drum sound...oof...forget about it.
I’m a drummer of 30ish years. Weckl, Novak, Rich, Chambers, you name it. I know music. Why did I just accidentally stumble on this guy a week ago? I was watching a bass cover of a Wayne Krantz song, checked out Wayne a little bit, then came across KC. I’ve been rejuvenated! I didn’t know I could have that new feeling of discovery like when you first hear the greats. This guys is on my short list of faves. Technical + creativity 🥰🥰
This is probably the best drum videos I've ever seen. He is...ridiculous, really. The swing on the ride togheter with that snare and bass drum groove is amazing. It seems he deeply respect the drum set
I always get the feeling I'm watching someone 'paint' a solo when I watch Keith play. His unique approach to the instrument is so refreshing in a world saturated with drummers that play more or less the same way - even if they are still incredibly talented.
I’m not a drummer, I’m not even a musician but I sure do appreciate something done well and that was something special. Had to watch it three times and yes I’ll be back for more, soooo good!
The momentum around 5:30 when he's playing those doubles and is bringing the sticks about 3 feet off of the drum head! The velocity created with that much "swing" / "throw" of the sticks is something to consider. Whew!
I'm rarely moved by drummers, I've seen many great, great drummers - and sometimes kid myself I've seen it all....... and then I witness something else, something so fresh, so right, yet also so 'obvious'. Still it blows me away. Even if you're not a drummer that solo will still touch you - because it's *musical*. For me, I still can't get over how HIGH he lifts his drumsticks during play. Simply amazing, and another to master to follow.
nobody fills like carlock. his groove his like the water, and his fills are like water boiling over and then simmering down again. this is what total mastery sounds like.
Always worth another watch. I love Keith’s left hand 1/16 notes on the snare, such a great groove going on. Style, skill, dynamics…he’s a master of his instrument.
My new warm up exercise! Man, this kid smokes! Who the hell would give this a thumbs down...Ed Soph must be so freakin' proud of this lad. LOVE the ruffs at the end.
Being a huge Steely Dan fan, I must say that when I listen to Keith playing with them I think of a great quarterback who can always lead his team to victory. He is an absolute beast with an awesome touch to go along with all the other great elements that make him a complete master of his craft.
Simply amazing! Keith has such amazing technique and unique phrasing. Truly one of the next generation of great drummers! Thanks for all of the inspiration, Keith!
Holy Cow. This is now one of my most favorite solos. Keith is the most amazing groove specialist. How he kept that 8th note Ostinato feel all the way through this performance even with all of those unreal fills was fantastic and the dynamics were incredible. I can only hope that one day I can try to attempt this level of play. Rock On Keith Carlock
You know, I actually like it when I see these fantastic drummers totally owning the kit in ways I never imagined. Keeps me humble and willing to learn more, instead of boosting my ego at the pathetic chops I pull off!
how are the rolls so loud? I mean I take pride in my double stroke rolls but his are very different and am confused about what is going on...I mean I get that they are in different subdivisions of time but still they are soooo spaced but also very much in time and very loud i will study more
First of the technical 'new guard' that does it for me, so refreshing to hear some feel alas well as technique..gives me a similar feeling as when listening to Gadd
Didn't even finish viewing, and had 2 share with a fellow drummer, very famous drummer too! Love this Keith Funk/ Jazz percussive Style!! In my top 10 buddy boy!!!!
He’s an incredible musician and I’m sure human being too. I haven’t had the fortune of meeting Keith yet but hopefully one of these days I will. He’s certainly a show you don’t want to miss, especially with Steely Dan…
I saw Keith and Steely Dan Wednesday night in Raleigh, NC and let me say, this cat takes it to another level when it's live!! He is one smoking drummer. I don't think you can have a conversation about today's great drummers and not include Keith Carlock in that chat.
Okay, so, neither I nor most people here will have the need to have this kind of technique when playing with other people, but MAH GAWD. I am as in awe of this as I have been in anything by Buddy Rich. Absolutely phenomenal skill and chops.
I think the one thing I appreciate most with this guy is his use of the hi-hat. It's just as much of a voice in his grooves as his snare, kick, or ride.
Cross-handed drummers and open-handed drummers. 1. Keith is by far one of my favorite cross-handed drummers. 2. Carter Beauford is one of my favorite open-handed drummers.
I'm getting the suspicion that I and 200 other people watched this a thausand times each. It's just.. perfect. Learning this technique drove me on the brink of sanity. Not that I'm done with learning from him..
What makes Keith stand out is that he's constantly got a steady grove going, no matter what else he throws in between..Couple that with a unique sound unheard of with today''s contemporary drummers, and you get superb drumming done by a technically proficient, pocket grooving,drummer..
Wow wow w o w just f@cking W O W .. unbelievable control, rhythm, melody, dynamics, texture, wow by far one of the if not the best drum video I've seen.. wish i could be in that room to feel the vibrations of it.. bravo carlock bravo
He is so... unique! The absolute control he has in his left hand grip (reminds my of early Dave Weckle), and that almost comical pinch grip he uses to "pling" the cymbals with his right hand - it's addictive because it's so refreshingly different from anyone else out there. And the grooves! So meaty and tight... Amazing!
It's so cool watching him play. His grip makes him appear to have like no control, because of how relaxed and open his grip is, but he has the MOST insane control. So articulate. Amazing.
Best description of his technique. It used to puzzle me but it makes sense now!
10 years later and this video is still VERY relevant of what the sauce is all about.
the bassdrum sounds so amazing!
I've watched this a 1000 times, and will watch again. Porcaro, Gadd, Bonham, ....and IMHO Carlock is in that group.... Freakin guy is sick.... just sick
Watch it at 3/4 speed now ;-)
I know John. It's all about the hi hat. That's where you see the talent...Bass drum kills bro
I'm up to 6 times!
He's like Dave Weckl but with a lighter touch
I’m a drummer of 30ish years. Weckl, Novak, Rich, Chambers, you name it. I know music.
Why did I just accidentally stumble on this guy a week ago? I was watching a bass cover of a Wayne Krantz song, checked out Wayne a little bit, then came across KC.
I’ve been rejuvenated! I didn’t know I could have that new feeling of discovery like when you first hear the greats.
This guys is on my short list of faves. Technical + creativity 🥰🥰
Check out Louis Cole, Keith is a big influence on him.
There’s so many cats out there nowadays. Some are not to my liking, but absolutely skillful. I’m blown away just like you are!
same! what a monster this guy is - and that kick sound
We've just had a drum festival at my town with Weckl, Chambers and Keith playing day by day. 🤯
Just found this video. I think feel, groove and a touch like this is what every drummer hopes to achieve. Phenomenal
Such tasteful feel. So musical.
Now THAT was a performance worth spotlighting! Jesus, that man ripped it!
Carlock kills it, and that bass drum sound is to die for.
Drummers like these make listeners like me appreciate the subtle sounds of drumming. He hits with such certainty and feel.
As a guitar player I’ve been down the UA-cam drums rabbit hole, this man is a monster, absolute beast on the drum kit
Nice! U picked up a pair of sticks b4?
unbelievably melodic and dynamic for an improvised drum solo...one of the absolute greats
Such a fidgety style. Didn't know of him until I saw him with Steely Dan. I'm a fan for life.
Steely Dan has always been the best at talent scouting.
One of my favourite and most inspirational video.
Such stick control, wow.
Going to see him May 2nd at Drum Center of Portsmouth NH. Can't wait!
This is probably the best drum videos I've ever seen. He is...ridiculous, really. The swing on the ride togheter with that snare and bass drum groove is amazing. It seems he deeply respect the drum set
Mind blown
The groove is beyond words!! I could listen to his solos all day!!!...and that's the nastiest way to "tune" drums!
Probally the best drumming discovery i see in 10 years !
I always get the feeling I'm watching someone 'paint' a solo when I watch Keith play. His unique approach to the instrument is so refreshing in a world saturated with drummers that play more or less the same way - even if they are still incredibly talented.
Awesome left hand stick control and what a great groove.
THAT KICK DRUM SOUNDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHH
SO FUNKYYYYYY
LOVE IT
The perfect combination of jazz and rock drumming with a unique touch...Great, great drummer
I’m not a drummer, I’m not even a musician but I sure do appreciate something done well and that was something special. Had to watch it three times and yes I’ll be back for more, soooo good!
His doubles are so amazing. It would be a blessing if I could just sit down with him for 10 min.
Simply amazing, and another to master to follow.
Wow,less is more!can watch him all night!
I just got a sub-woofer... that kick is MEATY as hell . Grooves are wicked too.
I saw him in a live clinic yesterday. He doesn't port his resonant head so it sounds even meatier in person. Fantastic performer!
He always has the holy grail kick drum sound.
.....wow....... practice paid off..... thank you... really.
inspiring.
nobody fills like carlock. his groove his like the water, and his fills are like water boiling over and then simmering down again. this is what total mastery sounds like.
Always worth another watch. I love Keith’s left hand 1/16 notes on the snare, such a great groove going on. Style, skill, dynamics…he’s a master of his instrument.
Absolute legend. Saw him live yesterday and was immediately blown away, along with my friends.
My new warm up exercise! Man, this kid smokes! Who the hell would give this a thumbs down...Ed Soph must be so freakin' proud of this lad. LOVE the ruffs at the end.
Who the hell would give this a thumbs down...Lars Ulrich fans
so good you don't even need other musicians wow !
Favorite drummer of all time.
Being a huge Steely Dan fan, I must say that when I listen to Keith playing with them I think of a great quarterback who can always lead his team to victory. He is an absolute beast with an awesome touch to go along with all the other great elements that make him a complete master of his craft.
its a crime id never heard of this dude - i have now and i love it,great touch/feel/sound.mucho respect.
Incredible TIME and Execution... so FLUID Effortless Command of the Set. Best of the Best of his Generation
Simply amazing! Keith has such amazing technique and unique phrasing. Truly one of the next generation of great drummers! Thanks for all of the inspiration, Keith!
His style is just so.... intriguing.... So loose and flamboyant...
Holy Cow. This is now one of my most favorite solos. Keith is the most amazing groove specialist. I can only hope that one day I can try to attempt this level of play. Rock On Keith Carlock
Time, feel, groove, creatively, chops.. dudes got it all
Great chops Keith.
Could easily watch or listen to this on a loop. Amazing
You know, I actually like it when I see these fantastic drummers totally owning the kit in ways I never imagined. Keeps me humble and willing to learn more, instead of boosting my ego at the pathetic chops I pull off!
This is Music!!!! I really enjoy listening to Keith Carlock, he really makes it swing!!!!
Absolutely amazing. New favourite drummer right there.
Check out Benny Greb; I'm assuming you haven't
Love the 32nd note rolls and hi-hat offbeats - Brilliant stuff...
those legato doubles around the kit. my word. fantastic. Enjoyed this
beautiful musicality and sound
this sounds so nicely fresh and clean..awsome..
If I were ever going to break into a bank I'd have this playing in my headphones while I did it.
he is so creative with his left foot in these grooves
This guy has Steve Gadd levels of groove
so good!
One of the BEST drum solos of this era.
Dear Lord, those open rolls...
how are the rolls so loud? I mean I take pride in my double stroke rolls but his are very different and am confused about what is going on...I mean I get that they are in different subdivisions of time but still they are soooo spaced but also very much in time and very loud i will study more
you are probably not using enough finger, using too much wrist in the doubles causes them to sound choked, and therefore not as loud or defined
Outstanding, Mateo--thanks for that tidbit.
They’re not double stroke rolls, there paradiddle diddles
First of the technical 'new guard' that does it for me, so refreshing to hear some feel alas well as technique..gives me a similar feeling as when listening to Gadd
This is just fantastic.
He's one of those drummers that has such a pocket you could pick up a guitar and just play along and he'll make you sound 10x's better.
Matthew Parsons JHHHHHGGYYYYY
Matthew Parsons One of the few guys alive today that you can instantly recognize! Dude’s amazing!
And when you see him play with Brent mason or robben Ford it will blow you away
very well said
@@DrMbutu with steely dan in bonn 2007/heavy rollers tour. great performance
Didn't even finish viewing, and had 2 share with a fellow drummer, very famous drummer too! Love this Keith Funk/ Jazz percussive Style!! In my top 10 buddy boy!!!!

Great googly moogly, another inspirational jaw dropping solo.. Keith's fills absolutely bloom..
what a BEAST. If I had access to the matrix, its the Keith Carlock drum programme that I would run first.
Just blows me away every time
I watch this everyday and everyday I want to give up the drums.
+Matthew Lujan No you don't. Why would you keep watching then?! Don't give up man!
You have to realize that he probably practices like 6 hours a day man. That's what it takes to get there.
@@mikesmith6129 i think not…. Maybe back then for about 10-15 years. Even Jojo mayer says that he don’t have time for practice.
Music is not a competition.
I think the one thing I appreciate most with this guy is his use of the hi-hat. It's just as much of a voice in his grooves as his snare, kick, or ride.
Beautifully animated, unorthodox playing. What a groove!
Well I don't know about unorthodox playing...pretty damm orthodoxic if I say so myself...
Oh my, I've not seen or heard many folk play like
Keith Carlock and the best name in entertainment.. Tasty!
He has such an impressive a satisfying sound.
Sounds like teen town with that timpani like bass drum. Superb playing!
Cross-handed drummers and open-handed drummers.
1. Keith is by far one of my favorite cross-handed drummers.
2. Carter Beauford is one of my favorite open-handed drummers.
Greek Pasta Salad sput has got to be my favourite open hand drummer. And one of my of my favourite cross stick as well!!
This is amazing in more ways than I could ever count
Watched it one time and recognized my self in the music.
my fav drummer all time, just amazing man.
I'm getting the suspicion that I and 200 other people watched this a thausand times each. It's just.. perfect.
Learning this technique drove me on the brink of sanity. Not that I'm done with learning from him..
Wow.
Now I know who was drumming for Steely Dan last week in Manchester.
Amazing.
Just wow...

Jesús Christ!🔥🔥🔥🔥 y’all shleeping on my mans! He’s got mad chops and is so musical.
I can't stop watching this solo!
Wow wow w o w just f@cking W O W .. unbelievable control, rhythm, melody, dynamics, texture, wow by far one of the if not the best drum video I've seen.. wish i could be in that room to feel the vibrations of it.. bravo carlock bravo
Such an amazing speed and precision its crazy !
A natural born drummer who's perfected the art of the groove.
353k views but probably 353 drummers have watched this a thousand times lol
Love coming back to this. This certainly my best style of drumming
How great is this!!!!
Absolutely Awesome !
I'd call this the WALL OF GROOVE. :-)
He is so... unique! The absolute control he has in his left hand grip (reminds my of early Dave Weckle), and that almost comical pinch grip he uses to "pling" the cymbals with his right hand - it's addictive because it's so refreshingly different from anyone else out there. hi keith ... what a performance ... what a musician ... thx a lot ... it makes so fun to look at this video ... thx!!!!!
I love how Keith has the chops for monster drum solos. But he holds the ego and just grooves.
+10 respect points.
Those flames at 540 was amazing. ...man I wish I could do that.
BRILLIANT
no need for melody when you flow your groove like this. unbelievable!
It's melody too, his phrases are melodic
groove monster
