    Nobody double-strokes like Keith. He's second to none in that category at least.

    Just wanted to say I came across your channel back in 2019 and it has done so many wonders in informing my approach to various aspects of drumming. I find your video style and personality very entertaining and engaging! Love seeing how your channel and your credentials as an instructor have progressed over the years. Keep up the good work 💪💥

    The most unique thing about Keith Carlock is his way of triplet-feel swinging so funky over four. Also how he switches between half-timing and double-timing the grooves and filles without people completely noticing. He often just cuts or speeds up the subdivisions in perfect spots just forcing the stank face so hard. Amazing player.

    Gary Novak plays a lot of similar ideas, especially in the Chick Corea Time Warp era. Gary does these ideas on the ride too mixed in with his time keeping.
    No one plays this idea like Keith though. He's got it at every tempo possible, which adds a wrinkle to the complexity. Its unbelievable, his mastery of this phrase ❤

    The video looks really good. Nice depth of field, the background is not distracting, and the talking head shot is clean and sharp. It helps emphasize the message. And the kitchen in the distance with a balanced minimalist background is a great choice. 👍

    Play that paradiddle diddle into a full roll and go around the kit. He usually just starts the lick with the paradiddle diddle and goes into a full roll. I obsessed until I got it down it’s difficult to keep the roll smooth as silk like Keith’s and come back in wherever ya want to within bar line or groove. Love the Meem loop examples of the licks adding or taking beats out like chopping beats .

      50mm lens with f stop down to 1 is the cheat code

    • @latentsea
      @latentsea 9 місяців тому

      F-stop “up” to 1. “Opening up” lens to wide aperatures creates shallow depth of field. “Boca” is the word to describe the pleasant areas in background and foreground that are out of focus “soft”.
      Appreciate all the drum knowledge and technique you offer, I gobble it up.

    I dont think they have much in common, its easy to hear some bursting chops and say they sound alike, if they match tonal colors, its more or less a match. The additude Keith has in his playing/technique/legato/stacatto is much more intense or at least very different, while gavin has sublime finesse and seems like a great studio drummer.

    I think Keith Carlock pushed that paradiddle based 32nd phrase way before Gavin Harrison even used with his own style.
    I remember having seen Carlock do that thing back in 2004 or 2005.
    No one can match Keith orchestration of this signature gimmick fill. Masterpiece.
    No matter of common DNA in my opinion.
    However the approach you had in going through both drummer styles is quite interesting.
    Personnaly, I prefer Carlock's open sound.
