Just wanted to say I came across your channel back in 2019 and it has done so many wonders in informing my approach to various aspects of drumming. I find your video style and personality very entertaining and engaging! Love seeing how your channel and your credentials as an instructor have progressed over the years. Keep up the good work 💪💥
The most unique thing about Keith Carlock is his way of triplet-feel swinging so funky over four. Also how he switches between half-timing and double-timing the grooves and filles without people completely noticing. He often just cuts or speeds up the subdivisions in perfect spots just forcing the stank face so hard. Amazing player.
Keith is great but I’ve been totally enamored with Gavin’s playing for years. It’s everything with him; his sound, creative grooves, impeccably tasty fills and chops…. The dude is just awesome
I'm not a great fan of Keith Carlock, but I never really listened to him. Gavin Harrison comes from the future. His drumming on Nineteen days is phenomenal.
Gary Novak plays a lot of similar ideas, especially in the Chick Corea Time Warp era. Gary does these ideas on the ride too mixed in with his time keeping. No one plays this idea like Keith though. He's got it at every tempo possible, which adds a wrinkle to the complexity. Its unbelievable, his mastery of this phrase ❤
The video looks really good. Nice depth of field, the background is not distracting, and the talking head shot is clean and sharp. It helps emphasize the message. And the kitchen in the distance with a balanced minimalist background is a great choice. 👍
Play that paradiddle diddle into a full roll and go around the kit. He usually just starts the lick with the paradiddle diddle and goes into a full roll. I obsessed until I got it down it’s difficult to keep the roll smooth as silk like Keith’s and come back in wherever ya want to within bar line or groove. Love the Meem loop examples of the licks adding or taking beats out like chopping beats .
F-stop “up” to 1. “Opening up” lens to wide aperatures creates shallow depth of field. “Boca” is the word to describe the pleasant areas in background and foreground that are out of focus “soft”. Appreciate all the drum knowledge and technique you offer, I gobble it up.
I do believe there is a video out there of Gavin discussing these type of fills and mentioning that they were inspired by a Billy Cobham show he saw in London at a young age.
Pretty sure Keith has admitted he got this vocab/concept from Elvin, and wouldn't be surprised at all if Gavin did too. I was looking to see if anyone mentioned Elvin in the comments, good call
Gavin! So amazing to hear from you. Flattered. Would you ever consider coming on my podcast? Here's a recent episode I did with Richard Spaven - ua-cam.com/video/1p3B9kbINYE/v-deo.html
Remember that Gavin is a self confessed jazz drummer fundamentally ... That's why there's the similarity you see ... I never made this connection, really good observation ...
Also if ya want to get ahold of Keith I think a good way is going on his wife’s UA-cam page and adding a comment cus she always responds she’s a big a fan of his as we are etc.
I''ve seen Steve Smith doing something similar, which I've stolen. Lol I like that, when up to tempo, the tom strikes almost become a flam. Nice sticking breakdown Nate... 👍😗
This is real. Concise and comprehensive. Thank you! But I do suffer every time you have to reach onto that small tom :D Oh well, to each their own ergonomics.
@@8020drummer I just keep seeing you having to reach up to your tom. If it suits you, fine. I myself have returned to more of an angle on the front tom/s, and am loving every minute of it. But maybe it's just me. More Al Foster, less "drum manufacturer's beauty shots". Still love your stuff, tho.
What IS similar too.. they play an agressiv drumming .both. and paradidle or not , they are mixing Tom and snare with a brutal sound . That what Phil collins did ..
I’ve been trying to get that Keith lick to sound good for YEARS and I can’t get the feel even CLOSE lolooolol Like, since he wore the iPhone shirt, that’s how long lololol
I dont think they have much in common, its easy to hear some bursting chops and say they sound alike, if they match tonal colors, its more or less a match. The additude Keith has in his playing/technique/legato/stacatto is much more intense or at least very different, while gavin has sublime finesse and seems like a great studio drummer.
I think Keith Carlock pushed that paradiddle based 32nd phrase way before Gavin Harrison even used with his own style. I remember having seen Carlock do that thing back in 2004 or 2005. No one can match Keith orchestration of this signature gimmick fill. Masterpiece. No matter of common DNA in my opinion. However the approach you had in going through both drummer styles is quite interesting. Personnaly, I prefer Carlock's open sound.
LOVE Keith. Smoothest drummer out there. His doubles are god level.
Nobody double-strokes like Keith. He's second to none in that category at least.
Very True!!
100% correct - that's the first thing I thought when I heard him.
Gary Novak begs to differ!!
Dave Weckl maybe ? ;-)
@@RogerBiwandu you may have a point there!

Gavin is the tastiest of drummer out there.
I saw Steely Dan last year - had never heard of Kieth Carlock...TOTAL beast! One of my favorite drummer now! Those doubles - is anyone better?
Good analysis. I never thought of Harrison and Carlock in these terms but it's true...
Two of my favorite drummers for the last 15+ years, subbed :D
The bells are bells from crash cymbals he cut out from broken crash cymbals.
Carlock would probably do your podcast if he got the invite. He does lots of different shows, lesser known hosts also.
Great video. Thank you
Any chance you’ve got a contact? 😳😳😀

These are the only kind of things i`m interested about in a drum channel, like abbdrums type of content. Great video!
This will be part of my daily routine for the next month. Great! Thanks

Woooo Brandon Scott learnings immediately apparent. What a journey in that regard😆
50mm lens with f stop down to 1 is the cheat code

What about my small Tom in particular? I’m actually having an ergo expert on the pod

I was wondering if you can deconstruct the grove from Vic firth spotlight, it’s so solid
While Carlock gets a lot of strikes in, and it seems ‘fancy’, it is Gavin Harrison that does it best.
Have you seen the drumeo video "Gavin Harrison's favourite sticking"?
haven't. does it shed light on my quandary from bonnie the cat?
@@8020drummer the whole video is about this fill haha
Anyone know what the song was playing when Gavin was shown at the beginning?
Would you play this in a bebop context? if so, how would you adapt it?
Elvin Jones ,the original source for this pattern😉
Did you get new cameras? Production quality has gone up
Gary Novak does this fill a lot too
Could’ve sworn this would be about hihat splashing
dude, did you leave NYC?
💪💪

Kuhbloosh......technical pronunciation provided by Todd Sucherman.
I enjoyed the video, but no, you’re just crazy. Bonus points this week for using a kit that doesn’t look like it was found in a dumpster dive 😂

Knowing I’d get comments like this was the reason I went in depth and explained the actual licks note by note ;)
Don’t think we don’t notice your new fancy lighting
All thanks to Brandon Scott and my editor for the lighting and lens advice
Garrison is not even half of the drummer Keith is and yes, you are right about being crazy.
