@@Jrenglehorn theyre freely in the drum, but his Sound Comes also from his REALLY low tuning and he hits his Floor tom harder because you Need to move more air if ist a bigger drum to get the same volume as smaller drums
You can get a really rich, deep booming thud from a 16" floor tom if you put an Evans EMAD bass drum head on it. use the smaller of the two damping rings supplied and away you go. Of course it will also need a new resonant head - a G1 is probably the best idea, but you could try a G2. I put a little fluffy toy in mine and it has the same effect as cotton balls, but with added wackiness. Mine is a rabbit, but that's just because I found it lying around. You could use any small very fluffy toy. P.S. While you're changing your heads, make sure the bearing edges are super-smooth. If they feel at all rough, then lightly smooth them down with some extra-fine sandpaper - like emery paper - and rub some candle-wax into them. Do all this and your floor tom will sound like a monster!
It's a demonstration of a tuning trick where the the 3 lugs closest to you are left loose while the rest of the lugs are tightened high. The result is by tuning the 3 loose lugs you can easily change from a fat low end sound to a high pitched funk sound very quickly. There's a few videos about it out there.
