Easily one of the finestly crafted comedies of that era. The dialigue frequently amazes for its sharpnes and cutting truth as to the mystery of marriage. The acting is shrewdly calculated to keep out of the way of the inevitable. This gem should be near the top of anyone's list!!!
Film Noir is my favorite genre of old movies but I am so glad I decided on this wonderful old "screwball comedy". Melvin Douglas and Claudette Colbert were great in this and some of the lines made me laugh out loud! Thank you, CineClips!!😊
Jean Dixon was a good nemesis for Claudette! 😅 Melvyn Douglas was such a pleasure to watch. Katherine Alexander was a very accomplished actress. She cld do drama or comedy with ease .
Recall hearing about a New York cabby that knew Claudette Colbert, who when driving by as she was walking down the sidewalk, would call out to her "hey Claudette". She's one of my favorites.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Wish today's had some of the ingredients this one had. Wasn't sure how I would take this cause sometimes there's some I've been disappointed in, but this one was outstanding!
Great message from this movie. Married couples are so special and should try to understand each other. Three cord union with Christ in the center brings victory. Ending was odd.
Good possibilities with the actors and story plot but never once did I think that he actually loved her. He went from being tied to his work to being stupid, no scene where he confessed to really loving her and wanting to make a real marriage.
The movie was good until the end. Julia went from being competent and strong to becoming wreckless and careless. Although the movie had some real shining qualities, the ending kind of flopped 😔. The method she used to get her husband back was somewhat disappointing.
I haven't seen this movie in about 8 yrs and while I could remember the beginning and middle, I couldn't for the life of me remember the end. That's why: it's weak and doesn't retain the marvelous character of the rest of the film.
Yes, but you must remember...this is from 1935 and they could only do so much. She had loved him for 6 years. And I think she loved him for "being him." And the ending is somewhat silly, but then again, this is not a serious movie! Just love it for what it is!!
I thought jumping from Douglas visiting Colbert in her apartment to suddenly they're married in the next scene the next morning with nothing in between was a strange editing or directing choice.
Very enjoyable romcom. Great cast. If its Claudette Colbert, its going to be good. Loved Jean Dixon as an Eve Arden with sharp claws. 🙂 Edith Fellows does a goo mean girl too. Thanks CC
Some of the best films were these screwball comedies. Add the adorable Claudette Colbert, Melvin Douglas & a fun ensemble of talented actors & here's your gem!!!😊 Thanks heaps.
I love that little girl Annabelle who is acting up her quips are so funny. Then she receives a good spanking and her voice is heard yelling and the man of the house says "this is the first music i've heard in this house for months." This is hilarious. Pure innocent healthy comedy where has it gone today ?
3rd time watching this wonderful movie. I love this brilliant song at 54:40 and I see it nowhere on the internet listed in the credits of this movie, even on IMDB. It deserves to be noticed and remembered. Maybe someone else can find it. It's so cute.: "Gwendolyn the rabbit, went walking up a hill They walked and walked and walked and walked, in fact they’re walking still I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun I saw snails with great big horns and bonnets on their heads They lived in shells and in their shells they slept in feather beds I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun Mary stole a little lamb from little Miss Bo Peep Cause Mary couldn’t sleep last night unless she counted sheep I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun Once there was a goldfish that went walking in the rain He lost his own umbrella and got water on the brain I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun Once there was an elephant who danced upon his toes He wore his feet out dancing now he’s walking on his nose I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun"
Dads uncle married his secretary long ago. Happy marriage lasting decades with him a wealthy entertainment attorney for actors like Edward G. Robinson who came to our family Christmas dinners.
I loved it, but this one had a strange progression. I get it (the point they were making), but why end it that way? I can think of 10 better ways to end it and make the same point... beautifully, all while keeping the same fun-loving, strong, and witty tone!
That ending (starting from when they got drunk) is complete nonsense. Last 30 minutes was like they switched from the original writers, or ran out of time and had to rush the script. Or even changed directors.
That was such good fun movie. Melvyn Douglas was sure a dish. I never cared for Claudette, they usually would cast her as some sort of beauty everyone fall for, while she wasn't a beauty, but it was good fit in this movie.

Amen! I couldn’t have said it better. This along with Ninotchka are some of my favorites of that era.
Paris is gone. It's now a Africa colony. Friendly, but not parision.
U shld be A movie critique 👏🏽⚡️✨
Melvyn Douglas was a really fine and charming actor and, of course, Claudette Colbert was among the best.
Melvyn Douglas was a handsome man,and a good actor. This was a good movie loved the ending
Herbert Marshall 's voice is so wonderful and caring. He was a leading man on screen and off, though he had lost a leg in the war .
Beautiful! More wonderful than I could possibly have imagined!

Good clean fun...🌷🌷🌷
Melvin Douglas was always superb! Claudette Colbert is one of my favorite actresses of the golden age age of Hollywood.

This movie is an absolute delight from beginning to end. What a treat it is to watch such a classic for the first time.
Usually not my genre, but I absolutely LOVE this movie!!!! Sweet, fun and thoughtful!! Thank you for sharing it with us!!!

Really great movie, great actors and terrific writing.
Delightful! Colbert is a marvel.
Great old movie with lots of candid commentary on life. Great fun with a wide collection of fine actors.
It was unique to see Melvyn Douglas as the straight man. I never knew he was such a fabulous, diversified actor! Great movie!
Wonderful,wonderful,wonderful......!!!!!
Beautifully restored film. Very entertaining.
I wonder if this was originally written for the stage because the dialogue was crisp, and witty.
Very nicely done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Wish today's had some of the ingredients this one had. Wasn't sure how I would take this cause sometimes there's some I've been disappointed in, but this one was outstanding!
Michael Bartlett as Lennie Rogers was good , like his dimples and smile

It was Hollywood's take on marriage. Unfortunately it was adopted by most of their Audience right-up to the present day.
Everything about this film is unrealistic and ludicrous
If only it were this simple, but sometimes it is.
Awe, William. Did someone break your heart, or did you find a romance??
Delightful! Thank you for showing this!😂
The movie was good until the end. Julia went from being competent and strong to becoming wreckless and careless. Although the movie had some real shining qualities, the ending kind of flopped 😔. The method she used to get her husband back was somewhat disappointing.
So they drowned?

Went to Paris
Just subscribed! Wonderful old movie better than most done today! Thanks for sharing!
Love Douglas
“HUD” his best role. Tough old guy.
Very enjoyable romcom. Great cast. If its Claudette Colbert, its going to be good. Loved Jean Dixon as an Eve Arden with sharp claws. 🙂 Edith Fellows does a goo mean girl too. Thanks CC
Funny movie. Thanks for posting.
Oh boy it was about time to have fun! 🤭🤭🤭
Good movie until it got really stupid, two of my favorite actors must have lost their good sense!
I loved this movie!!! Fluffy had me lol.
The script is genius.
Great movie 😊
Loved the movie
Great movie!
I don't know who played the daughter, Annabelle, but she was s fine actress
Edith Fellows played Annabel.Barclay
Very good!!!!
Lange nicht mehr so gelacht!❤
What a great movie! They sure do not make them like that anymore!
Love this movie
That was a lame ending to an otherwise so-so movie. I'm disappointed. 😕
FABILOUS MOVIE FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY

The costumes were wonderful, especially Julia's. But I can't imagine wearing them around the house.

Nice movie
Cute movie 🍿

"Gwendolyn the rabbit, went walking up a hill
They walked and walked and walked and walked, in fact they’re walking still
I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun
I saw snails with great big horns and bonnets on their heads
They lived in shells and in their shells they slept in feather beds
I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun
Mary stole a little lamb from little Miss Bo Peep
Cause Mary couldn’t sleep last night unless she counted sheep
I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun
Once there was a goldfish that went walking in the rain
He lost his own umbrella and got water on the brain
I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun
Once there was an elephant who danced upon his toes
He wore his feet out dancing now he’s walking on his nose
I don’t want to go to bed I’m having too much fun"
A great little addition to the movie...thanks for the lyrics!
Dads uncle married his secretary long ago. Happy marriage lasting decades with him a wealthy entertainment attorney for actors like Edward G. Robinson who came to our family Christmas dinners.
Gosh, Edith Fellows (Annabelle) was stunning!
old school comedy top notch writing don't make 'em like that any longer.
I loved it, but this one had a strange progression. I get it (the point they were making), but why end it that way? I can think of 10 better ways to end it and make the same point... beautifully, all while keeping the same fun-loving, strong, and witty tone!
yes its funny but i know what its like to be in a loveless marriage
could you add night in paradise 1946, gallant blade 1948, little egypt 1951
Why are they using the theme from IT Happened One Night? LOL
That ending (starting from when they got drunk) is complete nonsense. Last 30 minutes was like they switched from the original writers, or ran out of time and had to rush the script. Or even changed directors.
I love Claudette's beautiful, French Canadian face, and of course Melvyn Douglas is one of my favourites! Claudette's clothes are gorgeous.
French Canadian face? CC was born outside Paris, then she and her family moved to NYC. Nothing Canadian.
@@tia904 I read that she was Canadian, she certainly looks like many of the women in Quebec.
Good movie, but it really stupid.Ending was very disappointed in the ending of thismoothie it made no sense
A good movie but I didn't like the ending.
Claudette Colbert is awesome in this film!
"why they tolerate females in business I'll never know.."
That was such good fun movie. Melvyn Douglas was sure a dish. I never cared for Claudette, they usually would cast her as some sort of beauty everyone fall for, while she wasn't a beauty, but it was good fit in this movie.
I happen to find her very beautiful ❤️❤️.
@@christopherTYJEveryone's taste is different.
Delight move...
I dont think thats a real Shakespeare quote
Glad seat belts were invented.
Where Is Paramount costumes?
Geee! When Americans could speak English!😮
Imagine that?
Wow! It’s like, it’s like language EVOLVES as the generations go by and doesn’t stay stagnant! Nice observation skills margarita.
To many ads
He kinda looks like Rob Schneider 😂
How insulting!!! Omg
@@poorthing It wasn't meant to be an insult...
Wonderful actors; terrible story!
Sorry this was only so so. The biggest issue is Julia deserves so much better than Mr. Barclay.
Not a bad film, had to turn it off halfway through though, greed for advert money spoiled it !
The ending????
The whole movie was pretty good til…
Too much of a beating on the daughter. Not good.
INTERESTING ACTRESS, THE LITTLE GIRL I THIS, BY CHANCE, COULD BE JANE POWELL?
Edith Fellows. I looked it up.
💙
Forever list culture…😢😢😢
1935
👍🏼...Directed by Gregory La Cava...
Paris is overrated.
You saw the Eiffel tower, and a couple tourist spots, and you think you know it?
