A very amusing screwball comedy well acted by the three main characters. I liked the scene where Douglas and MacMurray shared their athletic skill of jumping over stuffed chairs. I agree that My Favorite Wife had a better story, but Too Many Husbands was much better in one respect: the close friendship between the competing husbands, and equally loved by the one wife, while the second wife in My Favorite Wife had a really raw deal.
Two months later My Favorite Wife came out with Cary Grant and Irene Dunn. She was missing and presumed dead for 7 years. This seems to happen a lot in Hollywood-a plot theme getting made in two or versions at different studios. Think Friends with Benefits, Big, etc.

Fred MacMurray looks and behaves so much ahead of his time. His looks and mannerism are that of a person from the early 1960s rather than the early 1940s. HAHA two roosters in the hen house in a nutshell What a goofy, corny, movie! Doctor Mead was even in it. Loved every minute of it. Thanks so much for this! Where has this been all my life?
Great film..thanks. This came out the same year as "My Favorite Wife" with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne...where Dunne, the 1st wife was lost at sea, presumed dead, and then comes back to find her husband re-married. That film premise was remade in the 60's as "Move Over Darling" with Doris Day and James Garner. "Something's Got To Give"..same premise was in pre-production, with Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin in the 1950's, when Monroe was fired, just before she died.
Melvin Douglas? Who could say “no” to him ?! He and William Powell were always my secret crushes. I thought I was born in the wrong generation, until just recently. Now I think God doesn’t make mistakes !
This type of story has been told in many ways & various combinations, two husbands, two wives every decade or so. Somehow someone always ends up on a deserted island.
"Hi, Y'all ! What a sweet film. Please watch closely from around 45 min's , to see Fred do some amazing jumps. And his smug expression, to irritate Henry is very good. And Jean's anxiety about them both trying to outdo each other, she's going " Oh, Oh, ....Oh ! " . So well done throughout.
I love the suit that Jean Arthur is wearing when this movie starts. But the credits don't say who designed it or the other great clothes she wears. Sigh.
The film is one of the many variations that there will be under the name of "My Favorite Wife", "Move Over Darling", and in France "Aux Deux Colombes" or "La Cuisine au Beurre". Once it's the woman we thought dead who comes back, the other time it's the husband ... It's always a funny, very funny situation, thanks above all to old Harry Davenport. When we adore Jane Arthur, and her little girlish voice, as I do, we complain her for having to choose between Melvyn Leroy and Fred McMurray. Talk about a duo of seducers ! But it's a matter of taste, entirely personnal, of course. Anyway, thanks for sharing this film in a really good copy. It was a great time,.
I totally this!!! But I did see a sad disturbing film starting my 3 son's fave, McMurray. It was titled " pushover ". With Kim Novak & an old female star of the old "Peyton place". It showed much versatility of McMurray. He was the bad cop and went dirty and died for it! Still a shocker to me, however emulates true actin. I too also agree, I would Haven given one to the secretary and kept the one of my choice !!!!!!!!
Katherine Hogan Thank you for the interesting and surprising information about the movie in which Murray played a bad guy, and even died! At the time, little did anyone know the importance of that role. It would be one of the (I think) few movies that portrayed him in what would turn out to be an untypecast role. Have you seen him in, "Double Indemnity," with Barbara Stanwick? He was absolutely fantastic! It, too, showed his character as a man who was passionate and caring in some parts and a ruthless killer in the others. He began as a run-of-the-mill life insurance salesman, and shockinbly, changed into a man who was anything but, run-of-the-mill. I don't want to tell you anything more about the movie, in case you haven't seen it. If not, I highly recommend seeing it. I'm sure you'd find it engrossing. It might be on UA-cam. It's a true classic, so maybe it will be easy to find somewhere. At any rate, Fred McMurray filled my childhood, (I was born in 1957), with many humorous and memorable movies, and television shows. He was unique, talented, and amazing! (Pretty good-looking, too! 😉). I will see if "Pushover" is on UA-cam. I don't remember having seen it. Take care. 😀
A very amusing screwball comedy well acted by the three main characters. One of the supporting actors was Edgar Buchanan who starred on "Petticoat Junction" with Bea Benedere. I loved the "athletic scene" where both Douglas and McMurray were jumping over the stuffed chairs. This reminded me of Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes climbing over the couch just to answer the door in The Red Headed League. 🔎🔍
Melvin Douglas was more of a dramatic actor this was a few times he did comedy. Fred McMurray can do both very well. In most of his movies he did comedy mainly. They both had long careers. Melvin Douglas was the quintessential actor winning the triple crown of acting. Winning the academy award and nominated several times for the academy award. He did many Broadway plays and television with accolades.
@@flyteoffancy yeah he was fantastic in that great movie. In my opinion he was great doing comedies too. He did another really good with Rosalind Russell (this thing called love)
This was a fluff comedy with good actors. It made money and entertained the viewing public. Remember, this is 1940...almost 80 years ago. No TV, not long after the Great Depression, not alot of money... relatively cheap entertainment and barely an hour and a half. It's FUN and not to be taken seriously. It lifted peoples spirits. Most of today's movies are not fun...too expensive to make and to see and in many cases BORING. Even the credits take too long to run...anybody ever sit through them at the end. I have...just to see all the people listed.. right down to the people who proved the food on the shoot. And the movies are too long and boring. I've got better things to do with my time than get fanny fatigue.
Three married couples under one roof. Each behaving like children. Love is the common factor, and there's no room for a dividend. This is so-o-o good! A wholesome and proper classic...love it! 🎥💋

Well .I hope those two people had met someone to make happy and to make them hay.

Vive l'amour.
I know how the secretary feels , I've been in love with Jean Arthur forever! When I saw her husband in The Barber chair I thought it was Saturday Night Live sketch. In a way they were the greatest actors of all times. It's not that they don't make movies like this anymore, it's they can't make movies like this anymore. I still love my black and white movies, can't wait till they come to the new drive-in theaters?!
They were all charming films
Too bad they aren’t made with that class anymore
@@kathyh4804 - They are fun films for sure, but many great movies continue to be made. Get yourself to the theater more often!
Melvin Douglas?
Who could say “no” to him ?!
He and William Powell were always my secret crushes. I thought I was born in the wrong generation, until just recently. Now I think God doesn’t make mistakes !
Too good. Loved it!
Edgar Buchanan_ just one of my favorite guys.
This type of story has been told in many ways & various combinations, two husbands, two wives every decade or so. Somehow someone always ends up on a deserted island.
Reminds me of "Move Over Darling" with James Garner and Doris Day. She came back on his wedding day.
Doris Day is a favorite too. Thanks for reminding me.
The lady is a very good actress
I love Jean Arthur.
sweet 9 stars thank you for the movie⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐have a great day keep it up
Swell and fun, love these types, nice humor
"Hi, Y'all ! What a sweet film.
Please watch closely from around 45 min's , to see Fred do some amazing jumps. And his smug expression, to irritate Henry is very good.
And Jean's anxiety about them both trying to outdo each other, she's going " Oh, Oh, ....Oh ! " . So well done throughout.
Yes...it's hilarious
Great film. Don't know how l missed this...
I would have picked my first husband, and gave the second one to the secretary.😌
I would give the 2nd husband away too
@@JaneFrieman Brett was a walking piece of art; such a joy to watch.
He was so fantastic in Ninotchka with Garbo, superb comedy!
@@flyteoffancy yeah he was fantastic in that great movie. In my opinion he was great doing comedies too. He did another really good with Rosalind Russell (this thing called love)
Oh my goodness. That sly, little vixen. 🦊🦊🦊
the film was great, i loved the house & i wish the film was in colour
Good Lord no! B & W is the way it was, and has great character.
@@tek6423 Color for me thanks! 😊
Did you get your wish? No. Learn to luxuriate in film's natural medium, the interplay of light and shadow: glorious black and white!
This movie is better than 85% of what is produced these days.
Maugham s stories and characters are such that you can identify them in your daily life. This was his genius. He observed people very well.
What a lovely movie!!
Wonderful entertainment. Thanks!!
Wonderful thank you so much❤
Three married couples under one roof. Each behaving like children. Love is the common factor, and there's no room for a dividend. This is so-o-o good! A wholesome and proper classic...love it! 🎥💋
That must be a different movie. Here there were not 3 married couples.
NYC movie...the jumping scene was most amusing !!!
Omg i was looking for this since 6Years
This is a really good movie!
Who could resist Fred McMurray in a Tux!?
☺️
Love these old movies what a wonderful escape from the craziness going on in the world rn.Watch The Crystal Ball...The Strange Woman and Back Street...what great movies.🥰
1:08:53 Uncle Joe from "Petticoat Junction" :D
Thanks for posting.
I just now recognize Uncle Joe from p. Junction. And the father role of Ms. Arthur, played by the white haired man started as the father in "my little Margie". I recall seeing it with my grandfather. To think I was but only 8 yrs.., when Fred McMurray played my 3 sons. Melvin Douglas so funny with Loretta Young and Carey Grant in "Mr. Blandings". Jean Arthur always so regal in the airport scene and looking at River with Fred. Thanks for these wonderful films !!!!!🤣
@@katherinehogan578 I still watch My Three Sons in the morning , love that show and Fred MacMurray was really a cute guy back in his heyday. just recorded mr. Blandings builds his dream house that's one of my all-time favorites of Cary Grant's well all of his are my favorites cuz I can't get enough of him, Dead or Alive gay straight bisexual whatever the hell he was he will always be the man of my dreams yummy 💓💓💓💞💕💗and Jean Arthur always great
Her father played on Gone With The Wind. He played the Dr.
@@katherinehogan578: I think in "Mr. Balding builds a house" Melvyn Douglas was with Myrna Loy and Cary Grant, not with Loretta Young and Cary Grant
I love it!
In the end SHE got what she wanted... attention from both husbands, and she herself didn't have to make the decision so no hard feelings.
Don't be a spoiler, please, to other viewers. Thank you!
