From what I understand, Darkside started as a percussionist, specifically a xylophone/marimba player. As someone who grew up doing this in most of my school years, I can agree. It takes a certain level of precision to do what he's doing, and could also explain his preference for using bigger sticks. Those look like straight up marching band sticks, 0's specifically. Dude is fucking fantastic.

@@dukecehli that was indeed me on bass. The three tracks we recorded for that split were the first songs that I ever recorded professionally

Great video, cool to hear your perspective. If you haven’t listened to anything by The Locust, id check them out. Their drummer is crazy

Saw them 2 years ago and they were great. His heavy cymbal use was definitely very distinctive.

Some say it's boring...but it's a wall of sound, with almost hypnotic patterns...played perfectly. I say it's amazing when you are in the mood :)

You dont have to be in the mood per say, you get into it when you start getting it (at least for myself) and you are right… the layers are immaculate

Sorry mate know this wasn't a big hitter of a request, but you nailed the reaction. I was just very impressed by the cymbal work which was a little unusual and i totally agree he's way ahead of the rest of the band. I do think the overall droning sound creates a hypnotic vibe, like a metal chill out song haha. Anyway ill do better next request !!

Haha feel free to request whatever you want, I spent a few years playing in a black metal band myself so it wasn't a problem. Plus the drummer was very impressive so that helped

Great pick. MGLA is spectacular, and the droning, hypnotic nature of the music really lets the drumming shine. It helps that it's extremely musical as well.

I was gonna suggest Blood Incantation - Obliquity of the Ecliptic, but they just released some new material, but eh, may as well check out Obliquity anyway.

BTW: He is university level ambidextrous xylophonist.

Very cool song, I remember them having a popular (in metal circles) release a couple of years ago. Must have been their latest.. I still prefer Exercises in Futility though.
