This it made me cry, I've worked in care with people like Gabe, and when you are able to make contact on a level that they feel safe with, it is the best. I think Gabe should get a guitar for two reasons. 1. He loves music. 2. You can see him playing around with the blue ribbon, and theirs times where he would kinda strum it like guitar strings.
The strumming motion you see is random stimming that is a calming mechanism or communication outlet. I think they might have tried instruments at one point but it doesn’t signify that he would enjoy it just because he does that. He could not enjoy it because of the noise and the feel of the strings.
When I got a job at a local paper I was slightly overwhelmed because I never went to school. I spent years watching Chris though and began watching him closer and I think I really learned how to be a decent interviewer because of him. He and his partner and this channel is such a treasure to have online, for soOOo many reasons
One thing though - when you're talking to an autistic person, don't look at them continuously, like Chris did. Look away from time to time., (this video is great, it's just a minor thing, but don't put someone with autism under continuing eye contact. It can feel challenging)
I'm constantly amazed at what I see on this channel it's hard to put into words, it's pure feeling in a way that I don't experience very often any other way (and I rarely feel moved to express a sentiment anything remotely like this).
Such a sweet boy, I have a autistic grandson, and he is nonverbal, but he tries to communicate with us with his hands, he is 16, yrs old and I love him very much, god bless you for being his friend.
As a autistic person it’s nice to finally see parents who don’t try to “fix” or “cure” anything. They don’t think he is less than and they don’t think that he is incapable of communication. It’s unfortunately pretty rare to see
I dont think its rare to see it depends what lense you are looking through one of internilsed abilism tht makes u mad at most things parents of autistic kids do that are just trying the best with no manual or if your looking at the non intenilisef abilism lense cuz theres alot of them out there dude im autistic too
Oh wow, when Chris played 'Melancholy Blues' and Gabe turned to sit facing Chris, it gave me happy chills! The way he started making more eye contact with Chris....oh, my heart just warmed...
This is why, as a verbal autistic person, I enjoy nonverbal communication like that. Nonverbal communication has a much greater capacity to induce strong positive feelings in other people than verbal communication(at least in my personal experience).
Gabe is so lucky to have Nikki & Caroline, two moms who are 100% committed to make his life the best as it can be. Thank you (again), Chris, for introducing the world to another amazing kid with an outstanding family!
The moment where Gabe touched your arm and smiled seems so special. Because you said "I enjoy listening to music with you." And it's almost like he reached out to say "Hey, me too!" Maybe almost like a reassurance, because people sometimes can't tell or even just an underlining of something he says through his eyes or his smile otherwise.
I am a person with low support needs autism, and no one understands how much music means to me, how much I hear in the music the notes I can pick up and replicate with ease and no one ever wants to just enjoy music with me. That would mean a lot to me too and I am so glad Gabe got to enjoy that moment!
Thank you for sharing your personal insight. It's interesting considering we can all be sitting in the same room listening to a song together, but each one of us hears it differently. I've never thought about that before. I would gladly sit quietly and listen to music with you. 🥰 When I was younger, I really listened to music and noticed all the details and individual instruments. I loved and appreciated music so much. But as I've gotten older, music gradually became just background noise to ignore while trying to get work done or something to fill the silence while driving or performing some task. It's been a very long time since I've just sat and listened to music without distractions.
@@joroc ideally it would be nice to be called a person with autism rather than 'an autistic' it just sounds nicer. I'm a massively social person with autism I have a large group of friends I go to gatherings and parties. We're normal human beings with a brain that just works a little differently so just like there are "normal" people who enjoy being social and some who don't that applies to people with autism as well. I think the confusion can lie in the fact some people with autism have issues identifying social queues. I have no issue identifying social queues and responding to them but it's a constant active effort and it can be honestly exhausting pretending to be the same as a non autistic person.
@@Heather_Morgan I often use the UA-cam algorithm to just listen to new music, it's amazing at offering things you enjoy. If I'm having a difficult day that's often how I'll spend an evening.
I love it how Gabe's body language changes from the moment Chris puts on the music. You can see how much more comfortable, interactive and smiley he gets as time goes by. It’s lovely to watch his confidence bloom and his beautiful smile. 🥰
Autistic people can have enhanced pitch processing and ability to identify emotional information in music, which is of course interesting because they do not comprehend emotional information that comes from body language or speaking tone well at all. I'm autistic so I have my theories on why all that is the way it is, but suffices to say that in therapy music is a good tool for autistic people to vent/channel emotions and process them. As long as it's music they like. In essence, guy puts on music Gabe also likes, to him it's like a huge amount of information they can pass back and forth through the experience of listening to the song and knowing they are both having a good experience from the same thing. Neither person has to say anything.
@@Velereonicstrue I'm on the spectrum and I feel more emotion from music than normies. Also I like to send songs to people with lyrics or melody in that communicate how I feel.
My daughter has nonverbal autism. To communicate she instead he uses her eyes and body gestures much like this young man here. I have three other children, none of them who have autism and she is probably the funniest of all of them. Once you get to know what they're trying to tell you, in their own way, they actually can have sense of humor just like anyone else. It's been such a joy having my little girl. Really glad to see this video. It made my day. Thank you
I bet he could speak if he wanted to, but why not just let the adults around him make the effort to figure him out instead? If I carried a child all of its life would it ever learn to walk? If I solved a kid's problems every time they met a challenge, would they ever learn to think for themself?
@@Kathy-pr4wu You're partially correct, but there's more to it. There is definitely a difference between these individuals and us .. but HOW and WHY that difference originates remains a mystery to science. There is (stastistically and scientifically speaking) a higher likelihood that it results from very early conditioning, than any kind of genetics or accident of birth. We know that from the huge amount of research carried out in the 20thC. For reasons we don't fully understand, this early conditioning (what used to be called 'orphan syndrome') seems to coincide with either limited intelligence, or hyper intelligence. We may never understand the mechanism, but it's crucially important that we keep studying this phenomenon - without impediment from obstructive politico-social ideologies.
@@Kathy-pr4wu I also wanted to say that those who would condemn your words, are the obstructors I refer to. Ask yourself whose interests it's in to demonise this very important research. How on earth does it help these kids, to refuse to consider ALL possibilities? It doesn't. It never will. This obstruction is purely for the comfort of the 'healthy' individuals in the autist's orbit. They don't like what it may be saying about their role in the person's condition. Always look for the motive behind the anti-science, and if there's even a trace of self-interest in it, you know it's both unsound, and unkind.
I love that Caroline called herself Gabe's "bonus mom" and how even Nikki at the end discussed the crossover lenses of being a widow, a mother of a child with autism, and being queer were all things that caused her once to shrink, and now... How do you know he doesn't have these things? It's impossible they didn't think of this since you, a casual stranger briefly watching him enjoy music, could deduce that this might be a good idea. They see him loving music, dancing to it 24/7/365.
i cried so hard while watching this idk why. its just that his family is so sweet, he seems to be such a lovely boy, that just needs to be understood (like everyone does, we all!!). also, the way you sat together and listened to some good music was so so sweet. he liked it, he starter to really enjoyed it with time, and it was adorable to see. so lovely. people really deserve to be seen and loved. i love it!!
His eyes are SO expressive, it's incredible. It's close to telepathic. He is very ethereal. I wonder if he has synesthesia or something too when he looks around and listens to music.
Yo he was like "Yeah everyone knows Another One Bites The Dust, cool." But you hit him with that melancholy blues and and it really seemed to strike a chord.

I LOVE this. Gabe wasn't very sure about this new connection at first. But then he started making direct eye contact, and you can see him really trying to connect here. Beautiful. ❤
This is important with people with autism as even if they aren’t showing it it’s important to give them time to get used to you and trust you just like meeting others for the first time and not going all out and overwhelming them
Dude, she said "I like to think he's saying I love you" then he looks at her so lovingly, I think she got that one right. So beautiful when he touched your arm and started smiling. Looked like he wanted to tell you he feels the same way about whatever you said.

As someone on the spectrum who plays guitar and listens to music almost 24/7, this was very wholesome. I think I might understand Gabe a little, I smiled a lot as well, thanks for introducing Gabe and his parents. :3

I love this channel dearly. My mom with cerebal palsy introduced me to it, and I fell in LOVE. Every time I watch these videos, I'm reminded of how being kind can make a big difference. You've changed a lot of people in a good way.
The eye contact that Gabe gives the people around him is the purest form of communication and understanding from someone who is nonverbal like him, it shows that he is aware of what’s going on around him and he is acknowledging who’s there and what’s going on 😊 When he reached out to Chris at 6:52, he just looked so happy to sit down and listen to music with a friend
I have a whole bunch of synthesizers in my home and the first thing I think, when I see Gabe, is how much fun it would be to introduce him to synthesizers. Just a whole bunch of keys, knobs, and buttons to manipulate, twist, turn, press, and interact with to create new sounds. I imagine how insanely fun it would be to listen to Gabe discover his power over sound. So, yeah! If you (Gabes parents) ever read this, have a look into the world of synthesis. Not all of them cost insane amounts of money, and all of them are an endless amount of sonic exploration. Anyhow, Gabe is a very sweet kid and it seems to me that he has lots of loving support from some amazing people in his life. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
I have a dj friend with a nonverbal son and he LOVES synths. He samples sounds from the neighborhood and from videos he watches throughout the day. It totally occupies him and he is creating something great!!!
There was a documentary I watched about a girl that was autistic and nonverbal and one day she found a computer and she was able to type out her feelings and thoughts. She was like "I'm a 14 year old girl I want to talk about boys and I'm tired of people treating me like I'm a child". I think she's a writer or reporter now. I'm happy they treat him like he's a 13 year old and they have a system of communication. I love how they were just hanging out vibing through music 🎶
He might, though if he has speech apraxia he may have other types of apraxia that would make it hard to do the fine motor movements required for guitar. There may be other instruments that don’t require that though
During one of the music bonding clips I actually thought “I wonder if Chris can play guitar? Imagine if he whipped one out and tried to teach Gabe a few of the easy chords like Em, C, D, G, A.” (Standard chords for learners
I love that Gabe found a family that loves him and accepts him. At the same time, as a speech therapist I can't help but wonder where's his AAC system?? He could express so much more with the right tools, it could be life changing for him and his family!
he has one they just didnt give it to him for the video he mostly just asks for food with it, he also has spoken a few words and sang from what ive seen on instagram
I thought the same thing as an ex SPED teacher, opportunity for Gabe to express himself, but then I thought, I'm sure they tried 1000's of times, 1000's of ways.
I love how you bond with each kid. It's really special. Gabe is so awesome, and so are his moms. I hope Gabe meets new friends who see and appreciate how cool he is, and I hope his future is full of happiness, music, and dancing.
I enjoy how Gabe is making you work for it with your one on one couch sitting. He's not going to just open up all the way with you at first. Like any teenage boy he's just playing it chill
It's that childlike joy you lose once you become a teenager, yet he still has it, I actually envy him. I wish I could be his friend, trying to see the things he enjoys and doing them with him is something all of us could use every now and then,
I work in a school for specific purposes as a social worker where students are non verbal, this interview made me cry seeing the quiet way chris just accepted Gabe and hung out with him. So much emphasis is put onto verbal conversation but connection between humans is so much more than words, its acceptance. Thanks for this video :)
Gabe reminds me of my son so much . His tallness , His eye gazing to connect , angelic look , love for music , hair , the way he dances on his moms page ❤. How they wish he could talk when he isn't feeling well makes me sad 😢. My son has alot of auto immune disease and it steals his joy.
i love how SBSK starts off all of their videos by getting to know the person before introducing the details of their condition - it makes it much more like an interview and much less like a case study

I'd say it's less of a stereotype and more of a symptom of autism. though it is a symptom of autism, some outliers that don't exhibit this symptom, such as Gabe, exist. Just like some people who have autism are non-verbal, but others are verbal.
@@isaacvoorheis8158Exactly, as I’m someone who has high-functioning autism, I can say that I have a hard time maintaining secure eye contact when communicating with different groups of people. People forget that’s called a “spectrum” for a reason.
@iamlabyrinthh I remember being young and having extreme problems with holding eye contact with people. I don't know if I'm autistic or not. I learned to force the eye contact and deal with the feelings I got. The feelings have subsided after decades of doing this. But, now people tell me that my gaze is absolutely piercing. Coworkers comment to me that my heavy, sustained eye contact is almost too uncomfortable for them sometimes. I usually say "well, now you know how I felt as a kid."
My friends have a mostly Non Verbal Autistic son, and last week for thr first time (he is 8) he gave me a.massive hug and kiss and didn't want me to leave side. I was amazing! I really felt we had a connection.

I've recently decided on a total career change into music therapy, and videos like this confirm that it's the right path for me. Seeing how music transforms the way people can communicate is truly magical.

Gabe speaks a lot. People don’t understand how he talks different. He is very talkative in his mind. I would enjoy talking with him. In that moment listening to the song he’s asking you about the song.
How did you know that ? Stop giving someone else identity in your head and try to project it to others as if it was them, stop misjudging people. Just accept what and who they are, no need of 'oh he must be this, he must be that'
As an Autistic person myself, I kinda agree. In my experience, Autistic communication, even with ourselves, is all about exactness, bluntness, exchange of relevant facts, and explicitly communicating every “implicit” nuance. If there is ANY room for speculation or storytelling on your part, we have not managed to convey what we really need you to know. Nonverbal cues alone cannot come near meeting this standard- it often cannot even be discerned 100% if a given action IS communicative in intent, let alone what it means. Situations where I cannot spare the mental energy necessary to use language are frustrating and infuriating as all get out for me. Hope Gabe minds this less than I would!

But since watching channel I treat them like i would anyone else . Just last week 2 people at a store were looking around . The girl told me “OH OH omg I love your bag so much ! We’re huge dísney fans. Jon look at her bag” I turned to thank them and noticed Jon was in a wheel chair with a screen as his voice . I felt years ago I would smiled and said thanks and walked away. But this time I made sure to walk over to him closer as the way he was sitting he couldn’t see my bag well. I asked them if they both love Disney and told them thanks again and told both to have a great day ! I loved how Chris kept his eyes on Gabe, paying attention and noticing any visual signs of communication. Also wanting to make sure that he was enjoying himself. I'd like to see more of this. Congratulations on this step.
I will never NOT have music playing when I'm hanging out with a friend. For someone who can be terribly anxious in social situations (even with my best friends and family), filling a bit of that silence with music is a mood saver for me. Thanks for having Gabe and his family on this episode!
I would encourage you to try and get out of your comfort zone! I have experience with that and calming the anxiety will only make it better temporarily and worse long term. Not everywhere you go can you turn background music on to talk to people. I strongly suggest getting out of your comfort zone and working slowly to ease out of it. Maybe first just turn the music down some and then to where you can barely hear it and eventually not at all. Takes dedication and will be uncomfortable but it’s all worth it.

I honestly got teary eyed 😢
It's also possible that Gabe had no idea what he said.
When I was younger, I really listened to music and noticed all the details and individual instruments. I loved and appreciated music so much. But as I've gotten older, music gradually became just background noise to ignore while trying to get work done or something to fill the silence while driving or performing some task. It's been a very long time since I've just sat and listened to music without distractions.
I didn't know austists had interest in social
If I'm having a difficult day that's often how I'll spend an evening.
i would listen to music with you anytime
I love it how Gabe's body language changes from the moment Chris puts on the music. You can see how much more comfortable, interactive and smiley he gets as time goes by. It’s lovely to watch his confidence bloom and his beautiful smile. 🥰
Autistic people can have enhanced pitch processing and ability to identify emotional information in music, which is of course interesting because they do not
comprehend emotional information that comes from body language or speaking tone well at all.
Wonder if he like Heavy Metal.....😁

@@Kathy-pr4wu I don't think autism works that simple

I think people in the comments mean it more like, the way he communicates and interacts is so different. They aren't saying he's not a person. That's what I like to think.
@@TopOfAllWorlds agreed. I don't think anyone is trying to be mean or anything but he just gives off that vibe.
100% people are totally missing the point
@@TopOfAllWorldsthey’re still missing the point
I love how aware Gabe is even if he is nonverbal. HE’S SO CUTE😩
He's a teen
@@anonymouse2059she's probably a teen too..
proof looks matter more than personality lol.
He’s nonverbal, not brain damaged!
@@paulcox2447nope if he turned out having a bad personality, no one would like him. It is a complete turn off from romantic attraction
The world loves Gabe…. Such a gentle soul.❤
Очень красивый мальчик, похож на принца 😊❤
I've recently decided on a total career change into music therapy, and videos like this confirm that it's the right path for me. Seeing how music transforms the way people can communicate is truly magical.
i wish you the best of luck with this career!
17 years as a music therapist, and I can tell you the magic never fades!
As an autistic person who listens to music 24/7, it completely dictates how I feel and the way I go about my day depending on what it is that I’m listening to. Extremely powerful stuff. Good luck with your career
Good luck! You're gonna do great!
As a nurse, this work is so needed! Not only so much research to back up quality of life improvements but I’ve seen it so many times either with dementia patients or children with autism, so many people need music and who better than someone trained! I do my best finding their favorites
That smile he gave Chris when they were listening to Melancholy Blues just melted my heart. Such a wholesome and kind video.
My great grandson is autistic I totally agree with using music. From the time he was a few months old singing lullabies to him had such a calming effect. Continued then with music videos and at age 6 he began uttering words in a sing song voice.
Yes !
GREAT GRANDSON😳😳
I am autistic, but verbal. I would love to see him watch someone play queen on the guitar. Music is what made me come out of my shell.
@@digitalpickles1277 Bless you. Music is the universal language. You wanting someone to play Queen made me almost fall off my char because my great grandson loves to listen to We Will Rock You. ❤
As an autist, I'm glad he gets so much love and support.
from ages 5-10 year’s old i had a non verbal classmate, it was amazing to see how all of our class were so accepting and and didn’t avoid them because they communicated differently. they loved listening to stories and gaining little smiles and signs of joy from them bring me joy as well. loved this video a lot
Gabe speaks a lot. People don’t understand how he talks different. He is very talkative in his mind. I would enjoy talking with him. In that moment listening to the song he’s asking you about the song.
Hello Beverly how are you doing today?... hope my message found you in a pleasant way?
Get this dude a bass!!! Gabe loves music and can clearly keep a good rhythm, I think he'd be sick on an instrument.
I was also thinking drums, but maybe start with frame drum
At the end of their listening party he made a strumming gesture
he definitely gives off some bassist vibes
He needs mirrors around to help with his self awareness
I was about to comment that. Give my man a bass and get him a good teacher and he would be insane
Thank you with all my heart for doing these visits and sharing with all of us. ❤
When you were listening to music and he reached out to you , moved his mouth.........What a beautiful sharing of two perfect souls ! Thank you
"I feel like life became more beautiful, actually" so clearly present in their love for each other. What a blessed and wonderful family.
Can I just thank this channel for every day teaching me something new . Years ago I would have been awkward trying to talk to someone non verbal. And I’m so embarrassed to even admit that . But since watching channel I treat them like i would anyone else . Just last week 2 people at a store were looking around . The girl told me “OH OH omg I love your bag so much ! We’re huge dísney fans. Jon look at her bag”
I turned to thank them and noticed Jon was in a wheel chair with a screen as his voice . I felt years ago I would smiled and said thanks and walked away. But this time I made sure to walk over to him closer as the way he was sitting he couldn’t see my bag well. I asked them if they both love Disney and told them thanks again and told both to have a great day !
It’s silly how simple it was and normal but I have NO idea why Years ago I wouldn’t have been able to.
So thank you !
This is so wholesome ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t take my eyes off of this young man. There’s something otherworldly about him. Perhaps ethereal is a better term. Just beautiful.
I felt exactly the same, he's such a beautiful person and I was so entranced watching him ❤️❤️
@@chiaisannoying Thank you! I sat there for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out what exactly I was trying to convey lol. Ethereal was the closest I could come to saying what I meant. Haha
@@sp-1973 I was also entranced watching him. What is this sorcery he seems to be in possession of? Just wow!

I look at him and started to cry. I felt as if i was at one with him. I'm an empath and feel his energy. Its so pure. He is in direct connection with the source. Much like the movie 'Powder(1995)' if you've ever seen it. Same energy.
The way he was making eye contact at points when you guys were listening to music ❤ and his taps. So heartwarming and beautiful to see diff ways of communication. Talking is truly overrated. What a beautiful family

My brother is so similar with Gabe. The body type, the way he plays with that strap, they both love music, he teases by pulling back what you want. They do understand a lot. We just assume that they don't cause they don't talk but they are indeed angels. ❤️
My brother is also very similar!! Greetings from Italy! 🥰🇮🇹
Have you read the reason I jump? It’s about a non verbal autistic boy, very revealing.
This was one of my favorites. I think because it was unique. Chris interacting with him was fascinating. I loved how Chris kept his eyes on Gabe, paying attention and noticing any visual signs of communication. Also wanting to make sure that he was enjoying himself. I'd like to see more of this. Congratulations on this step.
Oh gosh, at around 7 minutes when he looks up at you and smiles and he's very clearly telling you he likes the song and he's happy 🥺
Gabe is a blessing to the world. He is so fortunate to have two moms that love him unconditionally! ❤️
Hello Genevieve, Can I ask you a question?
Michael Jackson would LOVE him!
:)
I will never NOT have music playing when I'm hanging out with a friend. For someone who can be terribly anxious in social situations (even with my best friends and family), filling a bit of that silence with music is a mood saver for me. Thanks for having Gabe and his family on this episode!
This isn’t about you
I would encourage you to try and get out of your comfort zone!
