Barbra Streisand is a true vocal legend. The development in all her registers is incredible. Her low notes are beautiful, her belts are ringing, and her head voice has an opera quality to it. Her longevity is also incredible, she's 81 years now and she's still slaying vocals. And she's a great actor too. WOW. Barbra is guaranteed to blow away people who don't know her before, and even after you do know her she still surprises you!
I'd love to hear your professional thoughts on "I Never Has* Seen Snow" from 1973 TV Special "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments". It seems to be a master class in singing-- from someone who had a total of 1/2 a singing lesson in her life. It's an amazing performance that seems organic, yet technically perfect at the same time. That's the best this nonprofessional can explain it. 😊 Thank you! (*Yes...Has. From the musical "A House of Flowers". Lyrics by Truman Capote, composed by Harold Arlen .)
Barbra is 82 and just released a new song which is the theme for a new TV series on cable which she was never done before. She is the best there ever was! Her new auto biography is truly amazing!
She is over 70 here. Her voice for decades was just hard to beat. During this concert, it wasn't perfect but still great. I have noticed that her way of singing has changed in the last years. You can see it here (if you compare it to her concerts from the time she was 60). One of the biggest talents in music. It's funny (in a positive way) to see people analyzing her vocal technique while she never took singing lessons. She said once that when someone wants any tips from her, she says: don't take lessons, just think about what you are singing about. BTW - her mother liked to sing but was a school secretary, not a singing teacher.
Barbra is a great performer that knows her high and low note sounds and is enduring to listen and see.. Thanks for your reaction. More of Babs reactions please.
She has been my favorite singer ever since the first time I heard her I was 13 it was 29 years ago. I listened to her most days of my life and I’m still just so much in awe.💗💖💗

New to your channel and really enjoyed this. I've been a fan of this amazing artist since 1962 when I first heard her on a 45rpm of "My Coloring Book," and for nearly 62 years now, she has never disappointed me... not only as a vocalist, actor, writer, producer, director, and author, but also as a human being who is a genuine humanitarian. Imo, there's no other singer who can move me, as I see she does you, the way she does. The late great lyracist, Marilyn Bergman, once said, "Barbra Streisand, the best singer that any lyric writer could ever have singing their song." I like to say... hearing this immaculate voice is why God invented ears. Look forward to more Barbra reactions. Maybe one of my favorites... the in-studio video recording of "If I Loved You," short by sublime.
@ZoeStibiVocalCoach I recently finished her long-awaited autobiography, "My Name Is Barbra," in audiobook format... all 48 hours. When I first heard it was going to be that long, I thought "Oh my!" But as it was nearing the end I was wanting more. She speaks her life like she sings a song, coming from a place of truth and like it's just to you, and she's right there in the room with you. I highly recommend it to even the casual or newly-interested Streisand fan. Oh, and btw, she was 74 in this video.
Name another singer that can sing & perform like this at the age of 75….I’ll wait…..she is absolutely in a class of her own. She is the actress who sings & makes you feel every note. There’s no one better!! 🎶❤️
Hi Coach, maybe you can check out barbra' s " i never has seen snow" and " crying time" from her TV special - Streisand and other musical instruments. Both live performances 🙏🤩
I just wrote the same recommendation...then read other comments and saw yours. 😊 So yeah..."ditto"! I hadn't (yet) mentioned the duet with Ray Charles, but "ditto" on "Crying Time", too! 👍
Indeed! Her voice was beyond amazing in the 60s, then in the 70s it's as if all those amazing qualities became turbocharged. I guess part of it was just the change from a girl of 18 when she started to a woman of 28 at the start of the 70s. I also think it was her crossover from standards and Broadway to pop-rock in 1970. The latter provided her with less opportunity for belting and extended notes, so she punched harder. ("Starting Here, Starting Now" vs "Woman In The Moon" for example.) To borrow a phrase from that time, she went from "float like a butterfly" to "sting like a bee".
Streisand's mother was not a singing teacher, and not a professional singer. She was a mother who sang around the house. Yes, Streisand has claimed she never had a singing lesson. She may have once, years ago, claimed she never warms up. But this is Streisand manufacturing her own myth, which is one of her other great talents. She clearly rehearses, since they schedule weeks of rehearsal with musicians and technical staff before any concert or tour. There's abundant behind the scenes footage of these rehearsals. There's also film and audio of her warming up. And in recent years she's talked a bit about her warm-up exercises, and somewhat dropped the "I never do anything" pretence. She's also seen vocal coaches for voice problems, and has talked about those incidents in some interviews. So, sure, she has a natural talent. But the notion that she doesn't do anything to maintain or prepare her voice is really just part of the act., It's showbiz, folks!
That is very true. In fact, she did try vocal training once, but never went back after one session because she said it felt unnatural. Barbra was once asked how she manages to hold a note for so long, to which she replied, "Because I want to." That's how Barbra rolls.
This performance was 2016 when Barbra Streisand was 65! I became a fan when I first heard her on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1962 singing "My Coloring Book"! This performance was as good as it was first released in 1985!

Another thought…..please forgive me! Can you do the original recording of hers of “Being Alive” from The Broadway Album?! It is one of the most powerful performances I have ever heard….it will cause chills that you simply cannot recover from unless you change the subject immediately! Sublime! That song and “You and I” from Lazy Afternoon in ‘75 are two recordings that will blow you away! Lazy Afternoon is second after Guilty that are her greatest recordings ever! 😊❤😊
Without taking away any of your analysis, which is quite interesting indeed, I think you may be over-analyzing her technique a bit. Barbra has publicly stated that she sings as an extension of her speaking voice. She rarely gets into the technical aspects of her singing because she's never had a real lesson, can't read music and goes almost entirely on her instinct when it comes to 'acting' a song. That's not to say that she doesn't pay attention to mouth shape, when and where to breath and using her brilliant vocal control to push like a trumpet or hold back like a flute. She's certainly aware of her vocal power and its limits (especially lately). I saw her in August 2019 in Chicago and she trouble hearing the small orchestra (she doesn't wear earbuds) and it resulted in some notes that were either flat or sharp. I think she retired from live performing at the right time.
I agree with you there that she herself seems to instinctively make these shapes! However this is for people who are trying to make those sounds themselves. The belt set up is what so many people struggle with and don't manage to achieve the right mouth shape (something so simple yet the only way to really belt properly). ☺️ thank you for your comment I always appreciate constructive discussion.
