I read somewhere a few years back that Babs reflected on this and how nervous Garland seemed perhaps bc her youth/prime was slipping away in contrast to her younger costar. JG was iconic and this has been a fave of mine .. so happy to see your reaction and analysis ❤️
Judy was famous for her loving 🥰 and touching tugs at her fellow perfomer; it bugged the head of CBS but I honestly think 🤔 only endeared her more to US. She was so loving and compassionate-I’ve always had this connection to Judy and I remember as a 3 year-old being told by my mom that she died: we BOTH bawled.
Thank You Brittany for highlighting this MOMENT in showbiz history. It was Herstoric.
I love this clip of these 2 legends performing together. You don't see talent like that anymore. They could sing, dance & act.
I'm pretty sure there is still enough talent out there. I guess the main difference is, that these days the natural fun and feel for music is overshadowed by the need for "perfection". There are still great singers out there, but as much technical perfection as they have, I often feel the lack "heart and soul" in it. It's more about simulation feeling perfectly with technique, than actually feeling it and "letting it out". I don't know if my point comes through, it hard to describe.
@mrtveye6682 Your point comes through perfectly to me. Few singers today know how to sing in the moment. This is one reason Streisand took just one vocal lesson and never went back. She didn't find it natural to have to think about how to form her mouth or control her breath on certain notes. It was more natural for her to just feel the lyric in the moment, which is why she rarely, if ever, sings a song the same way, no matter how many times she may sing it. It's also why so many of the songs she's performed in her movies, like "My Man" and "Evergreen" for example, were done in one take. This is a rarity among today's vocalists. And as Barbra has said herself, "What comes from the heart, goes to the heart." So yes, your point is spot on.
I have yet to hear a singer as talented as these two. They both were naturally gifted and not trained. Unlike today’s singers who you can’t hear without a microphone up to their mouths, Barbra and Judy were singing with a live orchestra! Not only that, but were without autotune and layering of tracks like they do on all of the vocal competition shows. They were also projecting their beautiful and powerful voices while sitting down which is never done with contemporary singers because it’s too darn difficult!! There is no comparison.

Great reaction! Like how you note how they restrain when they need to and complement each other so well.
I hope you do more of Barbara Streisand. ❤ Love it.
WOW
Each of their voices is so different. How did they capture the softness in power. Beyond my ability to describe. Thank you so much Bethany ❤
One of the best duets of all time. If not THE BEST.
Not only a sensational duet, but a lovely moment. I've watched this before and thoroughly enjoyed it every single time.
Judy comes in so smooth. Barbra has a gift where her voice blends so well with others. Duets album is a must have. Barbra’s humming is incomparable. This is one of the best duets ever. People have tried mimic it and don’t capture this calibur of singing. Untouchable.
Judy Garland!!!!
This of course was the original version of this duet. It was featured on Garland’s tv show in 1963. Judy was a huge champion of Barbra and in turn, Barbra to this day cites her gratitude to Judy for the opportunity that it gave her. The idea was Judy’s. She suggested the duet to her musical arranger on the show. She put on Barbra’s record of Happy Days and sang Get Happy in counterpoint. The rest is history. The duet is much imitated but never matched. Two true legends. Thanks for uploading and for you enthusiasm in this iconic moment😊

Well what a trip back down memory lane my late mother loved Barbara therefore us kids learnt to finally appreciate ❤
When I was a teen in the '70s, I read a biography of Barbra that referenced this iconic moment. I was in my 30s before I saw a VHS copy of this episode, and it lived entirely up to its reputation. A thousand years from now, if we haven't destroyed ourselves, this clip will still be getting views. I come back to this clip you reacted to several times a year, just to remind myself how incredible a moment in entertainment history it was.
Acutely well said.
Epic! Unmatched.
The ending is spectacular, the audience knew it, where Judy shows they both have equal power in their voices, yet she held back during the song and let Barbara loose. It took me decades to realize as an adult that these two ladies had killer voices and were superior talents, even in acting on film, musicals, comedy or drama. The one thing Judy had over Barbara was the fact she was a hell of a dancer, could keep up with Gene Kelly...
It's so sweet to see your face watching the duet and how you love it. So do I❤. For me the best performance of theese extraordinary gifted artists.
12:57 That little vocal fry from Barbra on ‘are’ (….clear again) was so unexpected yet so so wonderfully welcome. It’s not something we often hear from Barbra.
Simply beautiful
❤ Judy ❤
I’ve been OBSESSED with Streisand since I was a kid ..I’m also a former Brooklynite as was she ❤️
BROOKLYN!!!!!
I've lived there... Does that count??? #stillwithgarlandalltheway
I was looking for reactions to Barbra and found your channel. 😊
What a delightful reaction to a equally delightful duet 🤩, thank you!
I subscribed and hope to watch more of your videos ❤ Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
I love your joy and your analysis . And yes, these legends do bring me to tears.
The BEAUTY out of these TWO MAGICAL HUMANS' VOCALS: it's so MOVING to hear.... UGH!! TEARED UP!! Thanks for this one!!! Barbra & Celine's duet of TELL HIM does the same thing!! UGH - JUST SO GOOD!!!
Love your comments about their wonderful singing! I think that probably Streisand has the best voice of anyone that I have heard.😀
I've watched this many times but seeing you enjoy it so much makes it feel like the first time for me. They did another medley on the same show where they sing "Wonderful, marvelous..." You should watch it because you'll also be enchanted by it.
Wonderful chapter today really amazing..Thanks a lot Bethany...Greetings from Chile♥️🇨🇱
This Judt Garland & Barbara Streisand performance is a favorite of mine also. I saw it on our black and white TV back in the day. But, I love Barbara just wish I could have seen her live. So,....you must react and critique Rachelle Farrell's America the Beautiful....you will not be disappointed
This, quite simply is lightning in a bottle.
Being a professional singer and vocal coach, I am always amazed at how naturally great their technique is. Neither one had singing lessons! They both do so many correct things that we singing teachers try and try to get out of our students with often times no success. Look at their tongue positions, especially Barbra's! I call it the three F's... Fat, Flat and Forward. And it's also a little raised; a nice naturally curved upward position that also helps to get it out of the back of the throat, especially for higher notes. Both have nice relaxed jaws. Look at their faces. They never look strained! And their intonation... spot on! This was live singing folks! No editing or auto-tune!
You also mentioned what a thrill it is watching and listening to two singers of the same caliber playing and feeding off each other. I'm always blown away with Barbra's performing ability and instinct at such an early age, and with not many years professionally singing before this! She's 21 here (Judy was 20 years old at 41). Barbra started singing in clubs when she was 18 in 1960, and didn't get a record contract until she was 20, in 1962 (a year before this show). It's funny when Judy says she has all Barbra's albums at home, because Barbra only had two studio albums out at that point. Hehe! Although to be fair, Barbra was on two other 1962 show albums as well, "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" and "Pins and Needles."
Anyway, it was a pleasure watching and listening to your reactions to this performance. You got another subscriber!
Judy definitely had a vocal coach at MGM, the composer Roger Edens, and before that, presumably, she was taught by her mother.
@@oliverbrownlow5615 That's true. All the kids at MGM had to take acting, singing and dancing lessons. I guess I was thinking more on the lines of classic one-on-one vocal training. Not operatic of course. But voice lessons with classic technique, like those taught in universities, conservatories and private lessons.
II am a big fan of Barbra Streisand. Love her voice. But I am here to say I think you have
the most beautiful smile.
I love your channel and your insights. In this video you see a great at the end of her career singing with a great at her beginning. Can you imagine them together at their peaks?
Can you do more of Barbra Streisand Please please❤❤❤
Just curious was Judy hanging back harmonizing until the end and when Barbra was just ramping up Judy opened the food gates??????
@@rickfairman5640 Pardon?
I enjoyed your analysis of this incredible performance. I recommend two must see’s. 1. The Battle Hymn of the Republic” .. Judy Garland decided to sing this song after her friend President Kennedy was assassinated. 2. Over the Rainbow / Command Performance.
Absolutely! 💯
My favorite!! Glee rendition Rachel and Kurt!! Rhe best!!
Great performances, wonderful reaction.
To me, their “Down With Love” medley from the same show is much more interesting.
Wait till you hear it!
This is perfection ❤
Funny story. When I was in elementary school, I was in my bedroom and my Mom was listening to the radio in the living room. She called me into the living room to listen to a song that had just come on and she asked me who it sounded like. I said it sounded like Judy Garland. My Mom said that it wasn't but it was a new singer called Barbra Streisand. That was it seemed like ages ago. Billy Boy
This is just one of those absolutely perfect performances. Much like Janis Joplin singing Little Girl Blue on the Tom Jones show..same kind of perfect in every way performance...technique, emoting, authenticity..making the song her own..or in the above case..their own.
I just discovered your channel and it's amazing! Have you ever heard Brazilian singer Elis Regina? She was fantastic, the best Brazilian interpreter that ever existed. You have to listen to it and, perhaps, make an analysis of this extraordinary vocal
Everyone zeroes in on this Garland/Streisand duet, but the other, longer duet of Arlen and Gershwin songs from the same show is way more interesting and more thrilling.
A bygone era. They really sang with confidence. Today there are so many women singing in a light breathy way that just doesn't impress.
You may be interested in singer Dallas Green (City and Colour). His voice is exceptional. He sang an impressive 'Rain When I Die' Alice in Chains tribute cover for Museum of Pop Culture acoustically. Alternatively his concert performance last year on CBC Music live was wonderful. Bow Down To Love shows his range well.
Just discovered your channel. You’re great.
How do you decide what to react to? Do you do polls or take requests…?
Judy Garland had a lot of troubles when she sang that, so when she sings “pack up your troubles,” she really knows what she’s singing about, and one can feel it in her voice.
I don't know why, but people used to have much better quality and this comment applies to all countries.
I have lived in many countries and I look at old and new people coming and going, whether ignorant or intellectual, there is a level.😢
Chris Colfer and lea Michelle from Glee did a great rendition.
UA-cam should have an option to give a double thumb for the very best videos. So, on that scale this would be a triple thumb - thank U!
Amen 🙏🏽🙌🏽
I liked watching your reaction to watching them sing. You had a sort of winsome look, like a little kid. Not being a singer I have a question and truly hope you will see this and answer it. I’ve noticed for years that Streisand does this thing with her voice where she will sound like a trumpet for a small portion at the end of a lyric, like the last part of a word. I’d like to know what that is, what it’s called. I’ve never heard anyone do that before. She does it in this duet when she sings “ the skies above”. Perhaps it’s a common thing and I just don’t listen to the right kind of singers or music to hear it. I’m only familiar with Barbra because my mom played her constantly my entire life so I know and love her. Anyway, any info on this would be appreciated. Thank you and am enjoying your videos.
Check out Jennifer Nettles and all the duets she has done the one with Lady Gaga at an award cheremony plus her version of america on memorial day singing america the beautiful
Good morning enjoy your show. You should check out Jennifer’s version of Hello at the Kennedy awards for Neil diamond and then jumps into a song for Bruce spring steen. On duets she took John Glosson singing How great thou art plus she has done a number of songs with little big town fun to talk!!
Not a big tech guy.
America the beautiful
Life in a northern town.
@bethany try this title song from the movie dangal by daler mehandi... Most powerful throat voice I have ever heard so far from any male singer.
I love the dynamic use of power and emotion in their voices. I don't hear much of that in pop music these days.
Davina Michelle made a cover of P!nk's What about Us? I think you'll enjoy it: ua-cam.com/video/T5ZLdNA_wOc/v-deo.html

Passing the torch......from one gay icon to another.
Would love to see you react to Australian Country singer/ songwriter Kasey Chambers cover Eminem’s Lose Yourself from a concert in Australia in 2022.
The Glee version of this is fabulous too x
Its crazy to think that Barbara was 21 (13 years younger than Taylor Swift) in this video.
Would love to hear what you have to say about Matt Belamy of Muse. Specifically the song Verona from the Will of the People album. Cheers!
Miss Vocalyst , I don't know just how to get your attention but, you have got to check out Rachelle Ferrell singing " AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL" I can not wait to see your reaction.
?????????
And now for something completely different: Pleeeeeeeeease watch DEEP PURPLE : CHILD IN TIME Live 1970
I don’t think Streisand could sing a bad note if she tried.
Great and even historic song by Milt Ager and Jack Yellen-it was FDR’s 1932 campaign song. But the words are no longer political, but universal.
Please react to Oğuz aksaç, Mustafa özarslan - Gece Gelen Konuk. It's one of the best live perfomances you could ever see
Listen to Timi Yuro....."what's the matter baby"

Female 'pop' singers don't sing like this any more.. Probably because they don't have this level of talent.

Putting aside (if in fact you can) the fact that these two are each such incredible artists in their own rights. What impresses me most about this particular duet is that the are both clearly and deliberately leaning into each other’s strengths. Judi is doing her utmost to allow Barbra’s voice to steal the show, and Barbra is passing that right back to Judi. There’s no egos fighting here. Each could be trying to outshine the other, and let’s face it, they could easily be trying to outperform each other, but they aren’t. Both are so restrained right up to the post where they start belting it out. It’s as though each want to perform in a way that pushes the other to perfection, and in doing so, they both win, and so did the audience in 1963, as are we some 60 years later.
This performance never fails to put a smile on my face.

It was worth watching this for the look of delight on your face!
The "holy grail" of duets. Probably one of the very best ever recorded!
two of the best voices ever. She was right saying that they were of the same caliber. It's like seeing Borg and McEnroe play. It doesn't get any better then that.
You just can't beat the golden oldies, beautiful match of Voices, dreamy
Nelson Riddle said Judy was the one who came up with the "mash-up" of the two songs.
Confusing Mel Torme with Nelson Riddle proves what I've known all along. Everyone on these boards is 12.
@@akrenwinkle What a douche comment.
@@akrenwinkle Does it make you feel better to unnecessarily criticize a complete stranger? Instead of saying something like, sorry but I believe it was Mel Torme and not Nelson Riddle" you have to post a snarky comment in order to bolster what must be a fragile ego. You must be a real treat to co-workers or friends, if you have any.
@@sansone12 No, I don't "believe" it was Mel Torme. It was Mel Torme. You stated something wrong as a fact to inform us, so you had it coming.
The pedestrian, unoriginal expression goes "You must be fun at parties." Right now, this very second, someone somewhere is busy telling a random internet stranger that. You could have thrown in "take your meds," and "mother's basement and/or attic" while you were at it.
@@akrenwinkle Feel better about yourself? Keep patting yourself on the back because that must be easier for you than being a decent person.
I love your reaction Coach and thank you for reacting to this phenomenal duet of both legends. I love❤ Barbra Streisand as the world's most gifted and talented singer, actress, songwriter, concert and movie director, concert and movie producer, filmmaker and a book author. I hope you can do more and more reactions to Miss Streisand's singing videos. 😘😘😘
Thanks, I needed that.
I was only 10 yrs old, but I remember this like it was yesterday. My Mom was a huge Judy Garland fan and we watched everything/anything she appeared on tv. We already had Barbra's first album and every recording of Judy's too. This was always one of my Moms favorite duets of either vocalist. What a great thing to live in a time where we can see/hear a performance whenever we please.
I am soooooooo happy to finally see a reaction to this, Judy Garland is my fav singer of all time (imagine loving JG in the 80s when hair metal was king, I was not popular in HS, lol) fantastix to see your reaction
There has never been, and will never be, vocalists of this caliber like these two.
Barbra has three albums filled with duets with some of the greatest singers from every decade since the 60s. No matter how different the voice of her duet partner, from Andrea Bocelli to Willie Nelson, to Kermit The Frog, Barbra never fails to complement each one, and not overpower as she could easily do with most.
Two of the greatest singers, I love them both. And they sing so brilliantly together. Beautiful.
Thank you for that wonderful reaction! Judy and Barbra sang another medley that very same night, one that I love even more. It's called "Hooray for Love" (misspelled on UA-cam as "Horray for Love"). Could you please, please react to that? :)
Thank you, the 2 greatest singers we have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
Wonderful . Fills up your soul. Their resonance is fantastic and the breath control that Barbra has is crazy. It’s amazing that people have natural talent like that, no auto tune , no voice lessons . They just open their mouth and these beautiful voices come out. LOVE it
Like a cello and violin. Extraordinary and timeless
Perfect comparison.
JUDY GARLAND: OVER THE RAINBOW (Command Performance 1943) IMPROVED SOUND
They were very good years.
I cannot express how much I have enjoyed your reaction. Barbra is my idol. Judy is sublime. My two favourites whom I have loved since childhood. I have loved these women for their musicality for most of my life. They’re always on my playlist! Happy tears to see the younger generations discover & enjoy their wonderful music & voices 🌹🙏❤️🥰
We had great variety television in the 60s and 70s, lots of music, great comedy. It was a wonderful time. Judy is my favorite all time female singer. This is an example of two singers with powerfully voices, but who know how to control the dynamic....which makes a great singer.
