    ive had this washer since last march 2021 and its had countless loads put through it. Keep up on the maintenance, don't overload it and something like this will last a good while. Another added bonus is that your clothes will actually be clean

    My family owned what must have been the residential version of this machine. The control knob is the only difference I see. Same agitator, same washing cycle, same sound. It brings back good memories. That washer was one of few appliances my mom ever bought brand new and she was so happy to be able to do that. As for the machine itself, it was a good performer. Clothes got clean. No issues except a belt replacement I did myself. The machine spent its entire life with us, over 10 years, on an outside covered porch exposed to heat and cold and freezing and kept on ticking.

    I had an old GE set from the 80's that would recycle the water from the tub through a top plastic mesh filter that would sit on top of the agitator. But it still would fill almost completely with water, I felt I could fill swimming pools with the water it used. Now I have a modern LG front loader I'm really happy with, and it continues to amaze me how effective it is, getting laundry perfectly clean with what seems like a teaspoon of water.

    • @harlequintheserpent7016
      @harlequintheserpent7016 Рік тому +1

      I've got an LG front loader in my own apartments and dealt with it's siblings numerously.
      And have a thing to share: there is a whole Bosch lineup that LG is strikingly similar to: the same knob-o-matic mode selector, mostly similar programs, same separate settings buttons.
      But there's a catch: for some reason LG's 60 minutes intensive doesn't fit well for washing towels.
      Every LG machine I've happened to use just didn't clean them good enough - so they could get foul smell just by drying too long.
      Bosch machines, however, do towels at 60 minutes program perfectly fine, with results comparable to LG's regular wash cycle with 90C.
      However, here comes the thing which I hate most about LGs - their "smart time estimation"!
      It had always been absolutely unpredictable and chaotic thing, a marketing bs ruining a mostly decent product.
      Minimal time it takes LG to pull off a wash at max temp is somewhere around an hour and a half. Which is already considerably longer than 60 minutes of Bosch fixed program.
      But as soon as you put at least a single item into the drum - the machine would most likely "weight" you a 2:48 or straight 4:40 wash! And as the device ages - bearings go bad, the "phantom load" increases, and you're basically locked out into the fixed time programs - or rediculously long washes.
      There are some more oddly stupid LG quirks that ruin the day - such as their unwillingness to open the door some 5 minutes after there had been any water in them and absolute lack of any backup door eject mechanism in modern models.
      Also, their total forgetfulness about the plans in case of a power interruption longer than a blink - end even when it's short enough... There's no difference as the machine would just restore itself into a paused mode and wait for you to come and restart it. Without any audible indication. And after five minutes in this mode it will happily shut itself down - just for you to hear it and go to set it up all over again instead of pressing a single button. So that means an interrupted wash will catch you later - no matter, if you've been at home, or sleeping, or outdoors - in the exact state it was interrupted at.
      Might be a good safety feature 0.01% ot fhe time, a constant source of frustration 99.99% other.
      So just think twice when looking at an LG washer... It's carefully thought out to piss you off, and it will metodically!

      I have the Whirlpool Duet Sport (2008 I believe) and its heavy duty cycle has been great for me. I play a lot of sports and my synthetic workout clothes get pretty stinky. But the washer gets them back to smelling fresh with no residual hint of BO. Using Tide powder detergent and Oxiclean. No previous washer of mine has done this, I used to run two cycles.
      Ditto for stained loads after yardwork and DIY projects, all stains gone. I'll be sad when this machine finally gives up on me.

Have 3/4" water copper water service & 3/4" copper to where it T's off to feed laundry sink & washer.Talked to another older timer and he said our entire block had low water pressure from the first day. Now have a great top load energy star LG washer that reduced my water bill by at least $10 a month and does not use much detergent. A nit-pick about the energy usage: This washing cycle used 150 watt-hours (0.15 kilowatt-hours) of electrical energy, not 150 watts. The watt (joule per second) is a unit of power (the amount of energy transferred over time). The watt-hour is a unit of energy. They are not the same thing. The joule is a really small unit of energy so we use watt-hours (3600 joules) and kW-h (3,600,000 joules) since they are more convenient for measuring household energy usage.

    I have a problem with the way things are being made today. We went to an appliance store and asked the Owner if he had any washer with mechanical timers. He said the speed queen he sells all have a PC board of some kind basically the same on all of the series of speed queen he has from the TR5 Serie and DR5 series. The TR7 series has a digital panel that looks like the Apollo 13 mission control computer panel. It has all sort of features and he mentions the control boards are made in SPAIN. Well, dont care where they are made cause the parts are all from China. I had to fix several of my neighbors front loader machine due to surges in power during a storm, replaced the PCB that cost them $700 - $900 dollars. To spend that kind of money you be better off buying a laptop computer and connect it to the washing machine via a USB and NOW you have a real computer controlling your washer. I find it ridiculous that these simple boards are so expensive, I know they are Designed to fail on purpose over time. It sad we have to screw each other for money.

I'm used to them filling up practically to the top when I put a large load in.... the new Whirlpool we got barely covers the clothes in the first wash cycle - how do they get clean? • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  Рік тому +4

      Generally, toploads that don't fill well will struggle. The wash plate agitates a little better (more surface area to wash at the bottom), but not by much in low-water situations. If you are forced to not use much water, the real answer is a front load, honestly. Because those baffles do a great job at moving and mixing the clothes.

At some big box stores you can ask if they have MVWP575GW model number available (Maytag site does list some big box stores). Everything is exactly the same except the warranty. Maytag specifically has MVWP575GW on their website as having the 5 year warranty. I don't know why some stores do this, I'm guessing they want a model with a shorter warranty so they can sell their own extended warranty.

      I don't think most people should go out of their way to buy an new old-style machine because of energy consumption (electricity + hot water + heat needed to dry damper clothes). The running cost would often out-way any benefit. If you happen to get ahold of one of these machines used and/or cheaply, it could be argued that it can be economic and environmentally friendly to use a machine that has already been made. Maybe a suggestion for this channel is to measure the weight of a test load before and after washing.

    Doesn't Consumer Reports state that front-loaders generally clean better than top- and use less water and energy? Top-loaders are v rare in Europe. I have a heat pump dryer; here in UK a conventional one would now be unaffordable to run; electric is approaching 40+ cents per kwh here (35 pence), having doubled in price in a year, meaning a conventional dryer used a few times a week would cost some $300/yr to run. I find the HP dryer does a perfectly good job with less than half the electric.

    • @bensappliancesandjunk

      Generally yes. There's a big divide in the US now because top loaders with flat wash plates use less water more effectively, but don't wash super great. The ones with agitators work better IF they can use a ton of water. But they can't without cheater switches so it's a real mess.

      @@bensappliancesandjunk Thanks, Ben. A further issue with T/Ls is they can't spin at the typical rate of F/Ls (1350 rpm) and so don't get load as dry, thus requiring longer (costlier) tumble. There are pros and cons, I appreciate, but it seems that T/Ls are rather more resource-intensive to run. They may be more robust - what's your experience? - as a typical fail point on F/Ls is the bearings, which I *think* sustain more force than T/Ls'. Many otherwise perfectly good F/Ls are scrapped because the bearings are 'shot' and are irreplaceable as manufactures use sealed drums (which is appalling), although it's a big job in any case. T/Ls seems easier to service. In US, where elec is much cheaper than Europe the resource issue isn't so important to consumers, but here the suspected running cost of 'old tech' dryers and T/L washers (all that water to heat) would put most off. Water isn't conspicuously expensive in UK but elec and gas is extremely so.

      Look after your front loader and it will wash better and won’t smell, don’t do cold washes either, it’s these cycles that make machines stink and then get mouldy, would you shower in cold water, would you do your dishes in cold water, or just dunk them in the sink and take them out again to be quick, You need heat to wash properly,just like the shower and the dishwasher and the dish water in the sink, then you clean up after, you don’t leave water and soap in the sink to go mouldy or in the shower, so why do it with a washing machine, leave the door open, clean the soap drawer, wipe round the door rubber, just like you would wipe out and clean the shower. So many people do T know how to look after front loaders even here in the uk where it’s all you can buy, they use quick wash because they think it’s cheaper, it’s not, it’s really not, more water usage and more electricity in the European front loaders ( because of the built in heaters ) CBA to go into why quick isn’t cheaper but it’s to do with heating the water

      58 gallons is a ridiculous amount of water to use to clean clothes. When you eventually get a new washer and consider a front loader, make sure it has a built in heating element for scalding hot washes and some sort of extra water button. You can check if it has an energy consumption table in the documentation, it should have at least one intensive program with a higher water level and extra rinses. It should also be a longer wash cycle since the detergent needs some time to penetrate through all of the stains.
