Why would anyone use this Cubase Feature?
In today’s video, we’re looking at a hidden gem in Cubase… The Project Logical Editor.
I know, the name doesn’t really sound that fun… or tell you anything about what this tool does, but you need to know!
I’ll show you how I use this to speed up some time-consuming tasks using a combination of presets and key commands.
This just might blow your mind!

Always appreciate your UA-cam video content! Every time I learn stuff I can apply straight away to Cubase :)
Logical editor is great for quick MIDI drum editing too. I have a preset to apply random velocities within a range. Makes it easy to make snare or kick hits powerful but not all the same.
You're right! While I do use the MIDI Logical Editor, I have never even looked at the Project Logical Editor. So thanks for this video. I can't wait to check it out!
interesting demo Chris, thanks for your expert guidance on Cubase, cheers Bruce
This IS a very useful tool! Thanks!
Thanks for such a great informative video. What's a difference between this and creating your own macro doing the same? Thank you for clarification
Thank you for your effort in this video. Let me speak frankly. I see this feature in cubes as complicated, while in (Reaper DAW) it is very easy.
Thanks. Best wishes!
Awsome video Chris! I love your videos. I have a question... how do you get your own presets that you have made in seperate folders in Project Logical Editor? Like 'your name', and all the presets you make will be in that folder..?
Keep going Chris! good job!
Logical Editor is a real weapon in Cubase ! highly recommend.... ❤👍
Hello, dear sir. Beautiful explanation, long live the hands. I have a question in Logical Editor
How to enter more than one value for each existing control within the selected list
Like if i add CC7 and CC10 and CC11 and I want CC7=70 and CC10=64 and CC11=100 at the same time
Yeah, great feature, like it a lot. Thanks for sharing your own presets.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
because it's awesome, made a bunch of PLE presets, combined in a single macro to automatically route, recolor and clear up names all audio tracks I imported into my mix template bases on the tracknames. Import, run macro, mix.
Salut Chris, is it possible to add to your macro "loading a specific drum VST" when you create your drum track?
This is going to be very useful. Thanks for posting 👍
Glad it was helpful!
I've set mine up like this, but I've also added the command to set up the output for the new channels to be routed to the appropriate busses.
Good idea, love it!
Thanks, Chris. Good teaching, as always. I had to uninstall Cubase 12 because of incompatibility with my old BIOS, and Windows 11 doesn’t seem to have the choices that you show in the Logical Editor. True?
I made some presets shown in video but fixed colour doesn't show. It always shows random colour ...
Nice. But how do you CREATE the user preset before editing it?
Another great video. As a funny side note... I happened to have captions on and it interpreted your name as "Crystal Limb" 🤣
Hi chris, thanx for your great efforts,
Can you plz make us for cubase ,
à template of the Michael brauer multicomp bus Master.
May I ask what the wide screen you have is ? what brand and model ?
Hi Chris, many thanks for this tutorial on the PLE. : ) I now know how to create a command to show/hide individual Folders, and show/hide individual Tracks, but I still don't know how to create a command to include both. For example, an individual Folder called 'Drums' and an individual Track called 'Organ', which is inside a different Folder. I've tried many variations, but I'm still drawing a blank. All I want is to be able to mix up what I see on screen, e.g., specific Folders and specific Tracks. Please can you help as I'm sure I'm missing something simple. : ) Many thanks, Darren (Wales, UK).
Hi there, has this feature improved in Cubase Pro 12?
For some reason I can't get this to work... Do I have to create a macro? It creates the track but I have to apply again the preset in order to get the colour. At first it is created gray, the default colour
Hi Chris, thanks for the video. I have a question. Faders controls only the volume. It is possible, using the logical editor (f.e. with a transformer, I think), to create a fader that can control other ccs, just as cc1, cc11, etc. in a midi track? I tried many times but at the end the fader still control only the volume. I use Cubase 13 Pro with several orchestral libraries. Many thanks. 😊
Hi Chris, I do almost the same. When I'm producing I create tracks, Midi Audio GRP etc.I have a tablet where I can press a button and the selected channels will for instance get the drum color and also fixes the routing to the drum buss. The only thing it can't do is move them to the existing drum folder already in the project.
Cool stuff, Stephan! These features are so useful!
Hey Stephan, would you be so kind as to post a list of your commands if that’s easy for you to do please?
@@kdcyp i'd second KD that one
Really helpful 🔥
Glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
What if you don’t deal with recordings only Samples via Media bay…how can I import a batch and speed the process of colour code and even assign them all to a certain group…for example I added some hi hat samples and I want to both colour code them to blue and add to an HI hat group in a folder… can that also be done?
I have made a macro that duplicates the track and the deletes event, but it sometimes also deletes events on the page that I have selected beforehand. Would be better if I could insert an "unselect all events" command at the start of that macro.
Maybe combining your Macro with Logical Editor would work, who knows :)
Hi great videos as always, just wondering if there was a way to colour all your stem tracks how you want (example drums-blue, bass grey, percussion yellow etc…) with one click using the logical editor ?
At the moment, when importing various stems for a project, they come in grey or random colours(I understand you can set it up for Cubase to automatically give every stem colours from your colour pallet) but I need to Manually select the track and colour them according to my colour code every time...
I also understand as of now, with the logical editor you can do it 1 by 1, as in drums, then guitars, then bases etc, just wish where was a way Toi do it with one click.
White thinking of the solution, I can only think for the logical editor to be able to trigger already made custom/ factory presets, so you would make all the track colour commands 1 by 1 and have the logical editor be able to trigger them all 1 by 1 automatically
I sometimes use it, but I'm always afraid I'm going to do something wrong in my project. I'd like Cubase to add some AI, where I'd tell it what I want to achieve and it will generate the script for me. At the moment, I mostly use the presets, some of them are very useful in v12.
These features are very useful, but yes, not that easy to learn, but it's worth to take the time to experiment :-)
Or..you can use HI (human intelligence) and read the manual like Chris does! Everyone has their way of learning and I love the technology..but you can’t learn and grow if it’s all done for you! Just a thought
@@odditeemusic6016 I see what you mean. But I prefer using my "human intelligence" creating music instead of losing my time with a tool that is at the same time really powerful but also truly confusing and inintuitive. I spend a lot of time improving my skills on Cubase (including watching all Chris' videos 🙂) , but if AI can help me being more productive, I'm all in.
@@ErixSamson One million percent. This is Cubase's way of saying "Hey, we're too lazy to add more features. You want more features? Add them yourself... using our puzzling Illogical Editor"
@@mistercrayle This is why I don't use Reaper. Sure it's incredibly powerful, but I'm a musician, not a coder. I want to spend my time composing and playing and prefer not to muck around with features that aren't clear.
nice
Hey Chris! Have you done a video on how to transfer your key commands to your new computer? Especially when you are changing from Windows to Mac or the other way around? I’ve wondered about this since I’m considering getting a new laptop.
I'm not Chris but to transfer your key commands and other prefernces just (on Windows) select the windows logo and navigate to the Cubase (12 or whatever version you have) )program, click on the folder and another one called user settings data folder will show up, click on that and scroll to keyboard commands. Copy it and then just paste it into the same place on the new computer, remebering to delete the keyboard commands in the new computer before you paste .
@@DS-wn4dx Thank you for taking the time to answer. I am currently on a Mac but I was able to navigate my way to the same place from your instructions. Have a great day!
@@pstephens__ You're more than welcome
great CS...i've always wanted to get moving on this ..especially with setting up add tracks and mapping etc from within cb12 pro midi map....this vid would i hope be a big help....from the outset though...nowhere inside my logical editor can i see Add....neither in apply preset or set up....under tracks it simply gives me the option of delete....is something missing from my 'out of the box cb12' or is there a behind the scenes check box i've got to check?
Hey Steve in your set up window of logical editor make your changes and then press the drop down arrow on the preset box now it will give you a save changes option.
@@rkr9768 thanks on that ...i've been scouring some and have gotten some information to fill in some gaps that i wasn't 'quite getting'....greg ondo's tutorial helped me along the way...as well as dom sigalas...i'll now go back to this tutorial to fully understand....thanks for taking the time out to reply.
@@rkr9768 just to confirm...got it to roll...insane ...i'd heard about PLeditor...but not really been inside of it ...projects are getting very large while working on an album,...wasted time all over the place...this just helps so much...both the ondo n' sigalas contributions are great.....
Seems to take more time to setup logical presets than just doing everything manually...
So complicataed to go through everything in the lgoical editor and getting to know hwo wevrything works......
Maybe im just too stupid
what about binge ?
I am waiting for "AI midi Quantize"! Now its pain in the ass to Quantize midi fast and good
This looks terrifying. I record drums on my Korg Nanopad 2. I then quantize them. I record mostly rock by myself since I'm just a home hobbyist. I have what might be a template that I use that has all my tracks ready to go for bass, electric guitars, acoustic guitar, vocals and synths. I don't use any macros. I don't know what they are or why I would want to. Any help would be greatly appreciated from anybody. I have enough trouble just getting things to work let alone trying to use things that I don't understand.
Hey, so many times when I am trying your tips, I click on the Video, and nothing happens . laugh
I've done that too!🤣 A real wtf? moment haha
Why would anyone use Cubase is the question
Indeed, using the most feature-packed DAW is just ridiculous.
@@LondonSteveLee The most feature-packed DAW where you can't even copy MIDI notes freely without being forced to turn Snap off. So feature-packed where you can only copy and move up/down Drum Editor notes ONLY if it's in a single line and not multiple notes that are in various lanes. So feature-packed that Sends are automatically OFF when created and there's no way of changing that. So feature-packed that you can't even create flam chords in the MIDI Editor without assigning a beyond lame LoGiCaL EdItOr command. Cubase is straight up GARBAGE.
@@mistercrayle All DAWs have their weaknesses - Cubase is still by far the most complete DAW.
Ableton is the only DAW. Sans of course the forced industry use of PT. Cubase is for clueless old hasbeens stuck in the past, there's nothing it can do that others can't for practically all users. The live performance ability and modern elements make Cubase look like a worthless fossil. Which it is.
