Great demo! Amazing how little blobs actually turn into cars - bravo! Love the yellow-purple contrast that emerges too. Thanks for sharing your process!
I really liked this one!! I do this occasionally with my pastel paintings. It's a great exercise in filtering out the non-essentials and focusing on the important shapes, colors and values. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing
Michael, there's something really appealing about pieces like this. You know, the kind that you see across the room at a gallery and it's easy to see what it is, but it's just begging for you to look at it closer, and then it blows you away with its simplicity. That's skill. As you're creating it, it emerges much like a sculpture would, (I think you mentioned that once in one of your videos way back). Hmmm, an 8" x 8" with a #8. Coincidence? Yup, that's what a coincidence is.
Wow....awesome self challenge!! In the last few seconds the red really defined the cars in the foreground. You're videos have really taught me a lot, and given me a few laughs as well.
This was really fun to watch Mike. "Will he make it, won't he make it ?" Lol. I love this approach and I'm going to give it a try this afternoon. Simplifying is key, and you have a great talent for eliminating the unnecessary, and allowing the viewer to fill in the detail. A great exercise. Thanks Mike.
Happy to see you do this one. The detail on the sides of the building kills me (when I try) but seeing you do it make me think of another approach. Thanks again Michael. This is a good one!
Staying with those large shapes for as long as you can really helps this painting. You’ve done it again. Thanks so much for all you share. Have a great New Year 🍷 Tallahassee
Super helpful! I find it so hard to simplify and "get rid of the noise", so to speak. Learning what to focus on and what to eliminate is definitely a learned skill. Thanks 👍
Bravo Mike, for what is worth these kind of videos help me a lot because I always overdo, and watching you simplifying that complicated photograph into that cool fast painting is very valuable for me. It's not like I'll go in that direction but it's extremely useful to know how to work out simple shapes.
Nice quick work, it would have taken me 20 minutes for the composition. Come out to northwest Indiana, bring a tube of titanium white, it snowing like crazy.
Just wow, I wish maybe one day with more experience be like u, who knows. But actually in my opinion this is such a masterpiece especially when you consider the time frame 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Hi Michael, I just wanted to say that you're an huge inspiration and I'm always excited to watch your vlogs. It would be really cool if you could film some food related stuff or books you recommend :) Greetings from Switzerland! Tiffany
Another Awesome instructional video Michael. You really are generous to do these! You empower the viewer/artist to say "yes, I can do this!" by breaking it down for us. I hope your fan base of viewers will show appreciation by becoming PATREON supporters! The cost is a fraction of online classes and incredible value! Thanks
Hey Michael! I'm currently working on a large commission piece of a building. Lots of geometric shape, and I'm used to working more organically with nature scenes. Would you say its imperative to use a ruler to ensure straight lines? Do you think I could apply this same technique you use on a larger scale? My style is a bit more refined than the way you paint, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are. Maybe too ambiguous of a question, but I suppose what I'm really wondering is if you apply this same blocking technique to your larger scale pieces?
-( Michael- I like that particular shade of blue for sky, like shades of that blue alot, the green shade , like it also, conveys pleasant feelings ""to me"" dont know why, into the city see the "" black predator cat, panther'head is in Silhouette 2-3 stories up on left building face,(hope you can see it), across street on opposite building see a "shadow of dove wings, " near, more near 1 story up, hints of red,( blood), hinted at. Also ,, some black "weaves "left and toward foreground of painting, up in the buildings, "" The Hunting Panther"", to me, (michael , I dont look at what you paint from, I feel, perceive what your CREATIVITY makes me see, I Loved this so much.
I loved this demo, and all in 20 min. I was skeptical of the shades of purple, but they were perfect. Amazing and brilliant work.
Thanks!
I love this. I wish you would do a similar one but use a full 30 minutes to get a little more detail.
Great demo! Amazing how little blobs actually turn into cars - bravo! Love the yellow-purple contrast that emerges too. Thanks for sharing your process!
Just amazing. I love how quickly those blobs turned into cars with just a few strokes. I need to start giving myself a time limit to really loosen up

Wow! Well done…in 20 minutes! That was so much fun to watch you truly simplify…and it worked! I was holding my breath for you. Thanks for sharing.😊
This is so simple & beautiful !! Really want to try this
i like committng to the large brush as I am notorious for slipping into detail too early! thankyou!!

Thanks Matthew! When we simplify and suggest the viewer fills in the details better than we ever could!
Thanks for posting this. I found breaking down complex cityscape so hard.

Thanks Michael! Often a few details at the end can really bring a painting together. So glad you’re enjoying my videos.

Thanks Lorraine! I didn't know if I would make it either! 😂
Suspenseful painting, maybe it's the new hashtag... :)
The way he moves his brushes is very professional. He is my mentor and inspiration. I started painting by watching bob ross and him.
😊
Yeah! Michael you did it!!! Routing for you every minute! Just like one minute gesture drawings in school!
Thanks Barbara!

This was so therapeutic! Thank you 😊
Nicely done. I was hoping you’d find your little brush and put hints of windows in the far building to lead the eye deep into the distance. Great job!
Thanks Luis!
