  • I show you my plein air process of painting buildings in an urban setting in this video.The key is to watch your proportions to achieve realistic effects. Also...don't apply color too thick too fast. Keep it somewhat thin in the beginning stages until you get the average colors and the proportions of shapes correctly established.
    Thank you for watching the video.

    Bruce, thank you so much. For me, a new painter, i always struggle with fussing over trying to be too exact. You are so clear in teaching us to relax about the composition and that it’s ok to eliminate aspects of what we see, and to focus on elements that we want to keep! Great lesson!

      Thanks Kat. We have to always keep in mind that our subject does not always present itself in a perfect manner. Therefore, we have to arrange things on occasion to make it work. Find the focal point that attracted you to the scene and build around that. Our eyes see everything...every little nuance, so we have to be careful not to fill every area with detail.....more around our focal point.

    Very nice Bruce. I really like the way you turn somewhat desolate urban scenes into excellent art. Thanks again for posting your videos. They are much appreciated.

    Thank you for sharing. I love (and agree with) your painting methods. Value is really the key to a great composition, and then you can have fun with color. Much love...

    Nice demo! I have a preexisting tripod - do you have a suggestion for plein air accessories you showed? Paint pallet tray specifically that clips on? Also favorite umbrella?

    I enjoyed watching. At 8.35 a bird flies past and I wondered if you had caught it and were going to drop it in the picture. Just a funny thing you catch watching on UA-cam as opposed to being on-site. Have you ever had occasion to paint something or someone transient to a scene and rendered it when painting plein air? Thank you once more for your help and tips!

      Hi - Thanks for checking out the video. Sorry for the late reply....issues with my YT notifications. I have not added anyone or thing to the plein air on site. I have taken out elements that were just too disruptive to the painting goal I had in mind.

    Enjoyed and learned from this Plein air session. Thanks. How do you like your Plein air set up. I am physically challenged walking with arm canes so I need to find a affordable oil painting Plein air setup that I can set up easily and must break down to backpack on my back. Do you recommend your setup for my needs or do you recommend another?

      Hi - Thanks for watching the video. If you are painting no larger than 9 x 12,as an example, then I would suggest the Guerrilla Painter 9 x 12 ver. 2.0 box (check out their website) The box is only about 10 x 13 x 3 and holds your paints, brushes (if you cut the ends to size to fit box length), and your painting panels. A medium size backpack should fit that and have room for water, paper towels, tripod, etc. It also depends how much you think you can pack on back. I don't think the above mentioned would be over 20 lbs.max.

    What's the ruler called and where did you get it. I like the idea of the grip.

    • @habowskistudio2724
      @habowskistudio2724  5 років тому

      Hi Kathy - There is no "name" for the ruler. It's just a ruler that has a small plastic tubular bar molded onto it. I work at Staples part time and during the "back to school" season is when I found it in our promo products. Most stores are setting their promo season now, so I would start there...or any place that does a back to school promo. Places like WalMart, Kmart, Etc.

    Hi Bruce. You appear to have changed the color of the building from a cool grey-green to a warmer umberish color but you made no mention of it. Did you just not like the local color?

    • @habowskistudio2724
      @habowskistudio2724  5 років тому

      Hi Rich - The main thing that attracts me with these urban pieces is the contrast......the pieces of shapes catching sunlight...that's the initial draw ( though this thumbnail was taken when the sun wasn't out on the building....clouds were in and out). I wasn't concerned with the local color on the building because it was pretty drab and boring...so I provided some life. I would never go too crazy with turning up the color/saturation in a situation like this, as I don't want the scene to become a caricature/cartoon of itself. I still want some realistic believability.

    if its one thing I can take away from this is that you don't have to add every detail of the subject you can take away things using your own judgement

      Hi - Thanks for watching my video. To me, the scene is a jumping off point. I try to focus on what made me stop my car or caught my attention when walking around. Everything else needs to be put through a filter to determine if it reinforces what caught your attention originally.
