One of the, if not 'the' most comprehensive and in depth instruction lectures on how to create and manipulate edges to describe the turning of form. Superb and many thanks.
Excellent in depth video. Worth mentioning why rounded edges appear soft. It's because we have two eyes and the space between them means that each eye focuses at a different point when an edge is curved. In effect we get a double image. The greater the curve the more apart the two images are and the brain blends them together into one slightly blurred image. When painting contours we are just imitating this to create accurate form.
Dear Mr. Waddell, Let me first introduce myself, I am Ybo Houttuin, a 63 years old painter from Amsteram, The Netherlands. As a lucky european i have on short distance acess to the entire art history in many Musea. I like your videos and watch them often. You teach technics in a way everybody can understand and benefit from it. And, off course, the alla prima is what many people like, they want results immidiatly. Its not the workshop off Van Eyck and his brother, they worked 22 years! on the triptiek, you can vistit in the St Bavo in Gent, Belgium. There technic is one where time is the main artist. The start is a drawing and then, very exact, painting in gray. So they made a B/W picture! Over it came the glazing, very thin, glazing for many years, accents on details and glazing on for 22 years.... The only exception is Hans Holbein the Younger, who made a drawing, put one ground layer and finished off with one glazing. Nowerdays, time disapired, people seem to run towards death. Why this story? Considering your knowledge, your skills and experience I just wonder what would you be able to create in this medivial technic. And if you want to see the Boys from Belgium again, I hereby invite you in our house in Amsterdam. Please, excuse my faults in Englisch writing as I hardly do... Ybo Houttuin
Just a comment to say, I so appreciate you sharing your skill woth us, Scott! I feel so lucky to be able to consume your content for free. When I'm in a better financial position I'll be coming over to Patreon.
You are a brilliant artist and a fantastic teacher! At 68 and with 55 years of being a professional artist and teacher I am humbled by your knowledge and excellent teaching.
I follow you here and on Patreon, and i don't know how many people have told you, but for me, you are the best teacher i have found! And i am so happy !! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! God bless and take care! ❤
You are simply amazing. An incredibly skilled and experienced painter, an extremely generous teacher and I don't know you personally, but it appears you are an intrinsically great human. Thank you for all of it 😊
U sir are not only a great painter/ teacher, but also a Great time saver. For years I struggled with these scenarios and in less than an hour you solved many hours of frustrating nights. Thanks so much for your contributions to this community. I also like ur sense of humor bcuz I’m a firm believer that if u ain’t laughing u ain’t living 😂😂😂
I use a small truck lettering brush to do crisp & slightly blended edges. One long line, brush loaded. But the oils have to be thinned to enamal consistency. Overlap first stroke & back over, spaced outward a bit so theres a slight mix. With quality oils, they can be really thinned to flow through long brushes, & still be opaque. The width of paint is all a uniform thickness covering really well. Working in thicker paint may leave transparent spots, but a soft brush & light touch will take care of that. I use them for any long edge. The brush length takes out any wiggles, a nice smooth line.
Hi Scott, You are such a phenomenal art teacher. Your teachings a worth more than money can buy. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful gift you have. I've been painting for 8 years (novice) and battle through paintings and then I found you .... GOD BLESS YOU, from the bottom of my heart. Nicky South Africa
I really appreciate the quality of your painting. It shows me that when I paint a portrait I really only take it to 75 percent completion. I will try to incorporate your lessons. Thanks again.
Great full demo on edges applied to a face, but works with nearly any solid form. It would be interesting to see you apply the same principals to other subjects.
So glad I found you! Excellent, detailed, precise ..... Learning a lot! Im not a classical artist but do love to paint portraits. Love the dry humour. Love the technical stuff.... Keep it up, Carole (South Africa)
I really enjoyed your explanation there is a lot of important information that's necessary to end up with very satisfactory outcomes for your work thank you.❤
Thank you Scott! I truly needed to understand and learn this secret! I feel so frustrated when a subject looks pasted on. Probably an unintegrated background 1:13 lighting issue more than i realized. I love the color blending trick for an edge that will now continue to turn back and not stop hard. I just got a lot out of this!! Thanks again!.
Thank You for sharing your talent and skills. Learning so much from your amazing skills and clear teaching. “Humor only” that you had unfinished edges on your wall pass through. Added a touch of an Easter egg to your edges video . 🤩.
I'm learning so much from the way you, I'm finally understand what's going on regarding lighting and how it affects surfaces. It's really challenging how I'm thinking about rendering forms.
I love it when I see you have a new video out but this one is the best yet. Your talent and knowledge is a pleasure to watch! You have helped me so much, thank you 😊
Always nice tips! Edge quality is the most common “error” i see with beginners. Im now used to keep soft edges on the go and just make them a bit sharp in zones i want contrast
This is the first time I've watched one of your videos. I'm always looking for more information on how to improve my painting. I'll be following yours and try finding you on Patreon. This was very informative and well done. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this wonderful video. It helps me a lot. It teaches me to be patient with my projects and to focused more on the shape of things. You are a great teacher. God bless you.
I just found you on You Tube and so glad I did. I take a painting class but have learned so much more from you that is extremely helpful and I love your teaching style - it is very relatable. I have a question about your colors - what about green? I always have problems knowing which green to use.
Ok, so I've watched everything and need new content while I'm painting. I stayed for the excellent visuals and descriptive advise and have grown to spot and enjoy the pessimistic sarcasm. Comon Scott get to it mate.
Hi Scott..this was such a useful video for me ..!Thank you so much..!I learn a lot from you..I must also say that you got me a bit curious..👀 about what you were looking over your shoulder for..🤔but that is just me…😃..Greetings from Croatia..love your work !👋
Thank you for these excellent tips, helps a lot; one other thing that I would be informed about is 'the colour(reflection) in the shadows': do i have to apply these first in the underlayer and background? Thank you.
Tks a lot. Is it possible to paint like this in acrylic? I am allergic to oils and wanna make a portrait of my granddaughter! Your classses are incredible! Cheers from Brazil!
Hey Scott, love your work. I have problems getting the right pink tint. Please could you tell me exactly the red colour you are using and is the Orange a Cadmium or Cadmium Hue? Thank you
Per favore ,potresti mettere la traduzione.Nn so bene l inglese,ma penso che la tua pittura è bellissima!, e mi piacerebbe veramente capire il contesto di tutti i tuoi video❤
I like the way he constantly glances back over his shoulder as if he's giving us that 'inside tip' that he could really get in trouble for having it disclosed.
