Beautiful streams in wild Wyoming. New subscriber. Also new to fly fishing, What is the small marker a few feet above the fly? Is it where the line attaches to the leader.
There really are! I believe you're referring to what most call a strike indicator. In this case, it was yarn that basically lets me know when a fish takes the fly. I have a video in my channel that goes through the types of indicators I use and why. Might be worth a watch but feel free to email me or ask any questions you have. Don't have all the answers but will share anything I've learned.
What type of indicator are you using? Great channel and videos. I've been following you on instagram for a while but didnt know you had a youtube until recently.
Dorsey yarn! Got a video in my tips section that covers all the indicators I use and why. Yea, only been serious about YT for about a year but I dig it!
Thank you. Not that often really. Just was warned from a guy living in the area that there were some really big ones in he area. He said the moose were the real animals to be weary of!
Thats good. I encountered my first in the smokies this past weekend. It was worth it though. Had nearly a 100 fish day chasing brookies. I agree on the moose. Have had several encounters growing up in northern Michigan.
Very cool...I do like seeing the rattle snakes from a distance. Just not on uneven ground where I could be off balance. Never considered the moose really, but have heard similar stories about their unpredictable behavior. Had a buddy meet me for a few days and we unknowingly, walk up within 25 yds of a big bull, fortunately it went the other direction....but those hooves clicking on the rocks was creepy!
I hear ya. My snake encounter was on very steep terrain. If i wasn't paying attention it probably could've been bad. That is a very close encounter with the moose. Crazy how much bigger they look up close.
Do you find that you feel the takes when nymphing before seeing the strike indicator or vice versa? I've never really used one. I use a braided loop connector that's a different color than the line so I kinda watch that but I usually feel the takes first if I'm keeping the slack out of the line. I guess I'm just not sold on a bobber on a fly line...
Sorry man I don't share stream names....never know who will see it. Just general areas...figure the person willing to do a little research won't burn it!
thanks for sharing Drew. a friend and me fished MT last year and had a great time. There is nothing like nice fish in small water. @@drc1883 no worries. Definitely had my attention so I double checked to be safe. Always concerned with trespassing in new areas so I try my best to educate myself before going!
IMHO, my thoughts are mostly yes...but there might be that one time it doesn't work and I'm forced to fend off a predatory attack. Especially with a black bear! Grizz...spray would absolutely be my first choice. Difference being w/ a handgun, you probably just need to hurt a black bear to deter the attack. Grizz...you're going to have to kill it and that would be super challenging with a handgun. Actually saw a black bear on this trip and the speed that he left the trail and climbed over the ridge was amazing...he was gone in 20secs. It would have taken me 20 mins to climb that ridge....I reached for the spray as my first option and would do it again.
What a cool adventure and beautiful scenery!

Dorsey yarn! Got a video in my tips section that covers all the indicators I use and why. Yea, only been serious about YT for about a year but I dig it!
Great video! You fish some amazing places. How often do you encounter rattle snakes out there?
Yes, they are enormous!
No, usually have slack thrown in to get a natural drift so I rely on watching the indi move!
Drew, what kind of indicator is that? It looks like a piece of yarn? Is it?
Way more successful in WY than I was. Though I taught myself fly fishing while I was there for a few days so that probably had a bit to do with it.
Haha, no question...those are wild fish. Imo, way easier to learn with stocked trout. But Wyoming is a pretty great place to give it a go!
Do u ever cook a few?...it would b hard for me not too but respect catch & release 100%
Nah, never do...don't have anything against it....just fish till dark eat a quick meal and drink a beer or two.
I fished Wyoming but i can't help to think that Idaho has way more Westslope cuttys, bull trout and brookies
I don't doubt it and plan to get there soon but Wyoming is 22 hrs drive which was all I wanted this year lol!
@@LooknFishy ok
Hell I live here and there SO many places I haven't fished yet...
Nice, I go to this river every year but don’t know that spot. Would you be open to sharing the location ?
Which river is that?
What stream are you fishing Drew? Those are some nice trout.
Sorry man I don't share stream names....never know who will see it. Just general areas...figure the person willing to do a little research won't burn it!
@@LooknFishy I understand. Thanks for the video & your time.
You may have mentioned it before, but what map app are you using? Base Maps
No apps on my phone. Aside from googlemaps at home, atlases and forest svc maps. My cell can barely keep up with instagram!
Thanks dude. You were slaying with nymph and indicator
Haha...I get lots of practice!
thanks for sharing Drew. a friend and me fished MT last year and had a great time. There is nothing like nice fish in small water. We are going to be doing a trip later this year in MT/WY and will most likely be non-camping and not going to far in the backcountry. Are there opportunities near Sheridan and Dubois or other places in the Bighorns where you can drive and hike in a little and have some great fishing? If you want you can PM me. thanks a lot !
Awesome but the vid kept distorting?
Think that might be your connection, but I'm definitely not an expert.
hey! have you fished northeastern illinois or southern wisconsin?
Wisconsin yes, never fished in Illinois.
As usual, nice video. Those were definitely some chunkier fish in your bigger water. Bows and cut bows? or was there a brown or two in there?
Thanks Kevin, good eye...mostly cutts, cut bows and rainbows. One brookie that I didn't show but no browns. Heard they were in the system but I never found one.
It’s been about a year now since I’ve asked but can you please give maybe a hint as to where the second stream is or even the first :) please
Sorry man, still not mine to share. Some of those streams were a gift!
@@LooknFishy you brake my heart
@@coleb5188 haha, I apologize!
So beautiful. But please for us beginners, identify different species. Thanks
Will do more. Thank u for the feedback.
Those Bighorn sheep were moving for you like domesticated sheep.
I don't know how you see that indicator in fast water
Can be a challenge at times...bright green helps on sunny days@
Do you take any bear protection with you? If so, what would it be? Spray? Rifle? Handgun? If the latter, which caliber?
Do indeed...spray on my left side. Spare can in my truck. 357 on my right side. Loaded with buffalobore 180g. Spray is my first pull!
@@LooknFishy thanks so much for the response! I'm making plans for a trip and this is one of the main topics. You're inspiring me to take the trips I've been dreaming of.
@@ccmusic2249 definitely have enjoyed my trips. None, have been wo drama but every one was an adventure. Plan and prepare, after that enjoy it!
Rod length? Rod weight? What fly you're fishing? I know what I personally would use, but if you're there why not tell us?
I have...check out the newest video. This was just early on before I knew what you guys wanted to hear. 10ft 4wt, perdigons, caddis and gche's were all productive!
did you go through a gate onto private property?
No, it was public. Had a sign that said, "please close gate." Plus, I asked a ranger before to double check.
@@LooknFishy Great, thanks. I asked because I just spent two months in NW Montana fishing and I know about those types of gates. Enjoy your videos.
@@drc1883 no worries. Definitely had my attention so I double checked to be safe. Always concerned with trespassing in new areas so I try my best to educate myself before going!
What wt are you using?
10ft 4wt...my go to nymphing set up!
Was that a handgun on your right hip? Do you normally carry, or is that for bears?
Yes, just for bears. Also have bear spray which would be my first option
Interesting. I back-country fly fish in Idaho all the time, and always wondered if my bear spray would be enough.
Can you catch fish for the pan.
Each stream has it's own regulations but in general, yes. Probably throw some brookies in a pan during my 2 month summer road trip in June!
