WOW…. The scenery is just off the hook. Myself being a bachelor I live on Montreal steak seasoning. Putting meals on the grill is about as fancy as I get. Watching you crack a beer after a day of fishing made me want to head for the woods. Keep the videos coming I look forward to them after work.
Loved how you palmed the reel to take up slack. I never thought of that. You are a fish machine, especially on the smaller creeks where your line control, and ability to sniff out fishy water is second to none.
When I was a backcountry ranger with the AK parks dept I said "Hey Bear" so much walking into brush it felt like I had someone I was always talking too😂
Yeah, that view. Priceless! I practice same thing, retired so I let those who still work have my spots on weekends. Such limited access on East Coast so...yeah, Kudos!
Wow drew! I guess you could say you found the perfect stream, you landed some big fish from that stream. Big fish, excellent scenery for dinner, just can't beat that. Oh yeah I can smell dinner cooking. 👍👍👍👍enjoyed the video.
Might be my favorite video of the series yet! Epic and beautiful fishery and scenery. These coordinates are worth far north of $1m, ha! Just got back from my 4mo trip out West this summer as well. Now living vicariously through your videos and cool to see how both of us could spend about the same time out there and fish 1, maybe 2 of the same bodies of water. Keep em comin and tight lines!
Hey Drew.... I betchya didn't notice you caught the same rainbow twice out of that pool at @ 7:35 and 9:55 in the video! You can tell by the lack of fight put up the second time around.. (And compare the spots on the cheek) I had some similar experiences recently in very similar pools which is what brought it to my attention.
Haha, I did. Left it in jic someone questioned the long release after I caught it at the beginning of the sequence. When it just kinda came it the second time I questioned what was up lol!
Great video! You are an amazing fly fisherman and a OK cook Ha Ha. Safe Travels and agree with others when they say keep these places a secret. Let others have to put in work and discover for themselves.
Haha, I've been fishing longer than cooking...so maybe I'll get better at that with time! I agree, definitely how I approach yt and social media in general!
Super nice as usual. Been in a neck brace all summer so your videos are my escape. Will be able to hit the water again in mid Sept. Till them I appreciate ya Drew
As always, great video!!..great fish and the scenery was awesome as always..its always amazing how good a simple meal taste when you're in the mtns or anywhere outside for that matter...take care!!...btw, my trip to Lake City is off, wife says too much Covid..we get our 2nd shot tomorrow...all hope for a trip is not lost yet..lol
Nice! I live near Durango. So many spots like this within an hour and a half. South fork of the Rio Grande on Wolf Creek pass is one of my favorite. But yeah, trout fly fisherman's paradise here lol
Good thing you went back for the 4W eh? Those were some beefy looking Trout. What an incredible steam, and those mountain views, simply gorgeous. I really like your editing too. Nicely paced and well composed shots. Well done.
Maybe it's just my western eye but I can't help but see all that standing fuel (Yes I know I have said that before). Great Valley stream and the population looks healthy. That one brown took off like bonefish! Cheers
My man that is a great trip. Cuts, bows, and browns plus all around 14-16 inches. The only thing missing, which I am now being greedy, is a 20+ inch fish. Great day. SW VA is starting to get lows in the 50’s so my streams should be good to go soon. Don’t have to fish below dams anymore lol. Great video as always! That Brown caught at the back of the pool looked to be a very good fish, and pulled hard on the 4wt. Good thing you switch out your 3wt
@@LooknFishy YES!!!!!! That’s the problem I have now! With all the water being low, it’s super busy at spring creeks and tail-waters. It’s great to have this water to yourself

Definitely appreciate you taking the time to film. If I can just make it 3 more weeks then Ill be back out in the RGNF and San Juans!
Man such an epic series Drew! Thanks for bringing us along! I've been fly fishing for only a year since moving to Colorado and itching to find some new spots like these soon. Getting sick of the crowded areas haha!
@@LooknFishy Thanks! yeah we're in the south end of Colorado springs so I have the whole pikes peak region at my fingertips and have been checking some of the well known spots for some good success, but I wanna get far far away from all that and spend a few days in the bush finding new zones and figuring this place out!

I fish similar streams & am looking to learn more but need a teacher especially when it comes to nymphing
Thanks for the feedback. When u get a minute, check out my tips playlist. I've made several dedicated vides on gear, technique and how-to's that might be helpful. Nice video. Nice release on that one fish...beautiful how they blend in when looking straight down on them. Nice dinner and just showing your meal prep. Nice gas stove. What kind was of stove brand and model was that? Super nice dinner with a view. Now I will have to go fishing this Labor Day weekend. Take care,. Rick
I would bet some coin that nobody had fish that stream this year at least till you did. Looks like nobody has been there at all. I would suggest that you get yourself an 8'6" 5 wt rod, it's my rod of choice for trout fishing. I messed with under 4 wt fly rods going back to when Orvis introduced the first 2 wt rod 7'9" 2 wt. back in 1981-82. With that wind, it would have been hard work for me to fish that rod under those conditions. 8'6" is long but not too long, I bought a Scott Flex 8'6" 5 wt my first 4 piece rod- I like it a lot. It's even better than my old Sage 8'6" 5 wt RP-II that I have had and been fishing with since 1985. Now that I am retired, I am looking for a truck to turn into the same kind of setup you have- Thou my current SUV will do and all I have to do is buy a tent. I have been watching your videos for some time now. There is a lot of good trout water in our Country, all you have to do is put in the time and get off the road. Be willing to do some walking. Heck, I got wild brook and brown trout fishing here in CT- Of course, you have to walk more than a few yards from the car, something most will not do.
Thanks for the insight! I have a 9ft 5wt but reach for my 8.5 ft 4 wt or my 10 ft 4wt more these days. Really like the presentation I get with a 4wt. I imagine I was one of the earlier people to visit that stream and I'm glad I did!
A long time ago, when I was a young man, I use to catch rainbows like these ,and some nice graylings, in Alaska, we use to eat them though,do you ever eat fish?
I do occasionally but practice more catch and release (CNR). Being from Arkansas, I've witnessed our fisheries suffer from catch and keep and poaching. Our tailwaters are mostly stocked with rainbows, cutts and a healthy population of wild browns...so we don't have a sustaining population of reproducing trout...many of us who fly fish here practice CNR. AR just recently put in place new CNR regulations and we've seen our rainbows benefit from the new reg's. We're now seeing 20+ inch rainbows which I haven't seen regularly in who knows how long!
Awesome fish, wow! Love the nice pour of beer in the food lol. Do you worry about your cooking stuff when it comes to bears? I saw you had some dish soap there so you just give it a little scrub and all set?
I'm definitely aware and try to keep the clean up away from my camp but having a truck camper...I don't really worry about it like I did with tent camping. But I still clean up...like when I drop food on the ground...that goes in my trash which goes in my truck at night.
Haha, yea my small town is about 15 years behind the world...but we finally have internet speeds that allow for YT...gonna be fun sharing the adventures lol!
This was one of my favorites, Drew. What model of Orvis 10 foot for Wade are you fishing with? Are used to work for Orvis in Manchester Vermont back in the late 80s and early 90s. It’s nice to see you’re so loyal to them. God bless you. John
I drive my truck, sleep in my truck bed camper and carry everything I need to live off the grid for 2 months while I explore. But I have flown and I hate it. If I have to check anything I put the return envelop labels you get from random companies (got a bunch from TU) that have your name and address on everything....rod tubes, fly boxes etc. But I try not to check anything except what is necessary. Carry my rods and reels, clothing, etc...worse case you have to buy some flies if that bag doesn't show up!
So appreciate these videos Drew. I learn a lot from watching you. How many drifts do you put through a piece of water before moving on? Do you tend to change up your presentation or just move on right away if it’s not happening?
Really depends...but I'll camp for sure if the hole looks fishy. Like the one in this video with the nice brown. That was probably the 40th drift and 2 fly swaps before it ate. But I caught that bow on the first drift and another small fish on maybe the 10th so I knew the hole held more fish...just needed to adjust depth and change flies a few times.
Yup I wear it attached to my hat and I film with a gopro hero 8. I gotta stay busy or I will drive everyone around me nuts! My wife is very quick to tell me when I need to go fishing!
Amazing how much beautiful natural wild land and country that's has been in the same condition in this country, that most of our population doesn't experience it. All that is thought or known is the mall, strip malls, convenient stores, fast food restaurants etc or maybe it could be a good thing they don't experience it ?
Yea it's a fine line...we need more people enjoying the outdoors, which will result in more use but also more protection as people tend to look after the things they are passionate about!
what fly could you use to avoid getting scalpins and other trash fish. i know a stream that has some nice rainbows in it but lots of trash fish. and advice??
