Burned Out House With Tall Grass = WORST Mow I've Ever Done

  • 99% of your questions are answered if you decide to read the description:
Q: Are you on cocaine? Why are you touching your nose so much?
A: It was ~90 degrees F during this job with something like 80% humidity and I was there for ~2 hours and 20 minutes from pulling up to driving off. When I tell you like I was sweating like a pig at a butcher's shop, that is an UNDERSTATEMENT. The sweat was POURING off of me, and I had to keep wiping it off my nose almost every 5 seconds, especially when I was on the mower.
Q: What is the deal with this house?!
A: A friend of mine purchased it in it's current state. Apparently it was a rental property and the then-renters accidentally started a fire. I don't think the Fire Marshall ruled it as suspicious, so looks like it was just an accident. The then-owner just decided to take the insurance money and sell it 'as-is' to avoid the headache of demolition, clean-up, and re-construction. My friend is currently researching what the best path forward is.
    Q: Why did you do X, Y, or Z before you did A, B, or C?
A: There are several things that affect the order I do things. One is filming, and one is what my goal is for the overgrown lawn. If you are concerned because I am not doing things the same order as you, there is no need to worry. Lawn care is like skinning a cat, there are 100 ways to do it.
I edged first so I could mulch up the edging debris with the mower. If I mowed first and then edged, I would have more debris to manually handle.
I cleaned up the driveway via edging and string trimming, again to get that debris in the yard and mulched up by the mower.
I blew everything off after edging and then string trimming to see what I missed each pass. Only takes a minute and also prevents the mower from grinding dirt into the concrete.
Q: Why did you mow the way you did?
A: One common concern is that I don't stripe. That means going back and forth in big, long passes. I don't do that because it doesn't film well, so I cut in small chunks or boxes.
One question on this job would probably be why I mowed in certain directions, why I backed up sometimes and not other times, etc. My goal with the clippings was either to get them to the woodline, get them on the driveway to dry up before raking to the street, or get them on the road where the city would collect them. All my mowing is based on getting clippings or groups of clippings in certain areas.
I also mowed almost everything at around 4.5 inches before going down to 3 inches later, as it would be better for the mower and safer since there was so much junk everywhere.
Q: Why didn't you mow the back yard?
A: Once I got on site and examined everything, I saw how much junk was truly in the side and back yard. You can not imagine the amount of debris that comes from a house fire. Nails, drywall, metal joist hangers and connectors, screws there is SO much stuff everywhere on the ground, and I mean EVERYWHERE. I know it doesn't show up on camera, but there is no way I could have safely mowed the backyard. There was too high a risk for personal injury while string trimming, and too much risk to my mower (spindles, tires, blades, everything). The fire department does NOT care about leaving things clean when they put out a fire, and seeing it firsthand was crazy.
Q: What tools did you use?
A: TORO MyRide 2000 60" mower, ECHO PAS2620 with straight edger attachment, HART 40v string trimmer, STIHL BR800 blower, & spring rake.
Q: How much did you charge for this?
A: Honestly, if my buddy didn't own this lot, I wouldn't have touched it, and if you know anything about my channel that says volumes. I am the last person on UA-cam to turn down a yard, but with all the debris here, I wouldn't recommend you doing a yard like this or even pricing one. BUT, to answer the question, I did it for free for the video and so my friend would let me film the eventual demolition and chart the reconstruction :D
    0:00 Oh Dear Lord...
1:21 I edge first to get edging debris in the yard for mower
13:15 Blowing everything off to see what I missed, get debris in lawn, and remove dirt from driveway
16:17 String trimming the remaining weeds in the driveway
18:13 Another 'rinse' to see what is left
18:57 This section mowed at two heights, pushed to woodline
20:53 Pushing the leaves into woodline to look fresh
    21:44 Mowing the front
33:22 The city collects yard debris for free. Less cost for customers and less work for me.
    34:52 String trimming
    39:14 Found the water meter!
    39:33 Mail call
39:44 As far as I got on the left sideyard
40:53 Another 'rinse' to see what I missed and push clippings to woodline
44:37 Final mow at 3" and to push all clippings to street
47:38 As far as I got for the right side yard
49:34 Forgot I went back and got a little more

While this looked really bad Brad, I feel like your worst mow as far as a viewer's perspective was that one crazy house on the side of the road with all those spiders. It had like running water in the bushes or something, but that place literally looked like a jungle. Took you nearly all day and I don't think you could complete the back. I think I remember you even using a hedge trimmer for some of the yard lol. Love what you do brother.

Many years after leaving one of our childhood homes, my sister looked it up on Street View only to find it had been recorded shortly after burning. There was still crime scene tape on the driveway! There’s a McMansion there now, instead of our 3 bedroom ranch ( the lot was HUUUGE). The rest of our old places are still there! I moved a lot as a kid. Our son will only have one house to look up, lol.

Well, that comes under a Cut of Compassion. I remember Kevin of The Lawncare Juggernaut doing a burned house and it was as you said, he was dealing with piles of broken glass, etc. and safety was a big factor. Thank you for all the factors you consider while doing a job. The massive amount of clippings from a tall cut tends to look more like a hay field sometimes. You are pretty tough working in 80% humidity. From edging, to trimming, to mowing and all, you gave 100%. It looks like a well cared for property now, not cut at bare minimum. Your idea of following the properties restoration will be looked forward to by all.

  • @jackmeeker6194

It looks much, much better but I think that tall yard you tackled with the Big Dog mower a few years ago was the "winner". Still, with all of the fire debris, I'm sure this one was quite the challenge, particularly with the high heat and humidity. Great job on the front yard; it looks nice.

The drive head of that electric weedeater needs to have a small hole drilled in it so that you can put grease in it. (plug up the hole after). Really you should have done that before the noise got bad. (Wrong pitch teeth) Top quality gear heads have a different type gears that don't get noisy if you skip a grease period. (You probably have straight cut gears inside. The best gears are screw gears or hypoid gears for weedeater heads)

Seeing this makes me sad. This was once a home to for people. This was their retreat, their safe haven. Memories were made in these walls.

1 thing I don't understand is ,, why do they clean all the driveway off after clipping the edges... then they run the lawn mower in the direction of the blower pointing right back at the CLEAN driveway ??? But I love your work,, very very good job!!!!

I don't guess you read the description. 😔
I blew the driveway off after edging so I don't grind the dirt I kicked up into the concrete with the mower wheels and also to put the edging debris in the lawn so the mower can mulch them. I then blow the clippings onto the driveway so they will dry out more quickly than leaving them in the lawn, which makes them easier to rake and blow.

I love the work you do but my OCD kills me on how you don’t mow like most people like going in a circle around the front and side yards. Is there a reason you don’t go in a circular pattern?

The city collects debris with a bucket crane, no? Seems like a bunch of random clippings would get left...I don't think the operator is getting out there with a broom to pick it up.
