The Grass Was Just A Little Tall...

  • Thanks for those that commented positively on my latest video. I got great feedback and was also able to land another lawn renovation. I hope you enjoy the video.
    On this job I use the ECHO DPAS2600 battery power base with straight edger attachment, HART 40 volt battery string trimmer, TORO HDX2000 60" mower, and STIHL BR800 blower.
    I anticipate comments of folks upset I blew clippings at the house. My alternative was to blow them at the neighbor's house/yard, so I opted to keep the mess on the client's yard and clean it up there. With side yards this narrow, and this much grass, there is no controlling where it lands. A mulching plate or discharge chute blocker would have created a VERY poor cut and would have probably not even been able to function. There is no mower that can mulch this much growth (I guess maybe if you go .5 MPH there is a chance, but even then the moisture in this grass would just turn it to a paste as I mowed it and clog the deck).
    As mentioned towards the end of the video, I usually leave debris street side for free city pickup. This neighborhood has a rule about leaving debris out longer than a day (which is silly, because since the city only comes by a few times a week it means you would have to time your jobs to their pickups and what if you only have the weekends free for yard work?) so I hauled it all away to avoid getting the client a nastygram from the Homeowner's Association.
    I generally don't collect grass clippings, but this yard was VERY thick and tall, and we were supposed to have some thunderstorms that would have soaked the clippings, prevented them from drying out, and smothered the lawn, so I decided to take the extra time and gather them up.

    I don't miss those prickly stickers at all. But the flat fuzzy ones that just stick to your pant legs aren't so bad. Out here in California, foxtails are the enemy. It's just one spikey barb that go through any fabric and pokes you. The worst is getting one stuck in your sock. Not to mention them getting embedded in the carpet of the car.

    I'll trim & edge first on a property that bad, then I blow debris into the yard & away from structures/obstacles, mow it. Then mow again bagging after its rested to dry. Repeat as needed then a final blow.

    Really nice. 100% Professional work. Maybe in future, they'll mow more frequently to avoid the brown patches? I've hated, in years gone by, to have to explain that, "No, I didn't cut it too short. When it's this tall, the sun is blocked and doesn't react with the chlorophyll down deep so the grass isn't green there. In a week or two it'll be fine". No, you just cut it too dang short. . Whatever. Still, what a nice job and it's great that you've got clients all there in the same neighborhood. Cheers from Texas!

    Another good reason to mow is so you know the height of the already cut grass and you can level it out accordingly. If you trim first, you may cut way lower than the mower and it may not look as good.

    Glad you had good equipment for the job. That was a sea of wet looking, tall grass. Interesting you mention how some kinds of equipment features aren't workable in changed conditions, green goo wouldn't have been good in an effort to mulch on site nor would, as you said, leaving hay-level clippings on the ground. It was a good point to bring up that you can't always adequately control where clippings go and that it becomes a shift to good cleanup habits and manners. I'd noted the problem with houses closely set together, it might look o.k. on paper but paper designers, who haven't managed yards, don't know that things as clippings don't go down in a straight line much of the time, whether a mower or string trimmer, etc. Can you imagine telling a tree where the leaves have to fall? Admiration, you got that looking very nice.

    Dang good job with lots of extra work. Notice your mower went thru some boggy areas on the sides of the house. Can't be avoided and it is too bad the grass got so tall. End result: Job well done and a good looking trimmed lawn. Frankly I would refuse to live in a housing area with an HOA. They are only as good as the folks who run them and too often there are too many a-holes dictating and taking money from the homeowners.

    • @CopperCreekCuts
      @CopperCreekCuts  2 роки тому +1

      I think if I wanted to just mulch up everything I would. Since I was collecting, cutting it one time only has the benefit of making it easier to gather as the grass blades are longer and knit together more. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess think of straws on the ground, maybe 1,000. If you had to rake them up it would be easier if the straws were normal length, right? But if you cut them in half, it would be harder. If you cut THOSE pieces in half, it would be harder still because the smaller pieces would go everwhere. IDK if I am right, that is just my reasoning!
      BUT if I wasn't going to gather the clippings, yeah, probably mowing the yard 3 or 4 times going an inch or .75 lower each time would leave the best finish (assuming the yard isn't wet like this side yard and can handle being driven over that many times.
      Good question!
