Learn how to play Octopus's Garden as performed by The Beatles from their 1969 Abbey Road album. A fun song, co-written and sung by Ringo Starr, nevertheless has some great country influenced guitar that is worth a deep dive into. John uses a travis-picking fingerstyle that he learned from Donovan during a trip to India the year prior, and George plays some great country-ish style lead guitar throughout and together creates a really fun guitar arrangement. If you have two guitars in your band this one is so much fun to do and nobody expects to hear it.
This lesson covers both John and George's parts in entirety.
Also, check out these two great demos/covers of the guitar parts in full by @sampopkin
One covers the familiar version from the album: • Octopus's Garden- The ...
and another covers all of the noodling solo work from the final take, but didn't make the final mix: • Octopus's Garden- The ...

Thank you so much for these Beatles tutorials - they are brilliant. I often find that when I get some insight into how the songs were actually played, I have an even more increased respect for all four of them as musicians.
You are a machine 12 foot Chain, I don't know how you put out so much great content! Thanks for this!
For real. Excellent choices for songs and a thorough explanation. UA-cam gold.
This song really shows the genius of The Beatles. If this song were done for Ringo's Rotogravure solo album in 1976 with other musicians, let's just say it would not sound like this at all. All three Beatles went the extra mile to give Ringo a standout song that, at bottom, was a Ringo throwaway.
Watched some video on UA-cam of Ringo saying he was on a boat in the Med and a sailor was telling him how octupii have little areas on the seabed where they arrange tins or rocks or whatever, an octupus garden. Octupii are smart, can solve problems and aquariums know to be careful with them because they'll climb out their tank into other tanks to catch and eat fish.
Yes, they'll cross a room to take something from a tank several dozen feet away. They're capable of opening a jar or bottle to extract a crab from inside and can fit through any tiny hole provided their beak can fit through. There is a video of a Pacific giant octopus escaping off a boat through a hole that looked about 3 or 4 inches in diameter (although it was square).
You forgot to mention what he was smoking.
Great job again😀 it strikes me how its not mentioned how great the Beatles were as a Country-Rock band, before the Byrds , Burrito Bros etc…George could really play that style wonderfully, even early on songs like Baby’s In Black, Act Naturally, What Goes On…Run For Your Life, etc etc…you can even hear Dickie Betts style ( pentatonic major) in Octopus..this was before the Allmans debut! Also I am convinced HARRISON co-wrote this song, maybe even Lennon musically…you can even see Ringo debuting it in Get Back and George beginning to help him..I think he was playing it on piano in C at that point but only had the first verse! Anyway thanks again ..love this song.
There’s a great special, Tribute to Carl Perkins and George blows just about everyone away!! Clapton can’t keep up lol! Setzer might be on it and he’s a beast so it’s killer!! Been years since I ‘Ve seen it but George was great!!
Great job Doug!
What the miracle was is that they all had a wonderful musical education, but how they interpreted those sounds into such beautifully melodic stories, and naturally complimented each other's styles. I believe that is a once in a hundred lifetimes that it comes about that these four personalities just happened upon each other. Boy , it sure was a privilege to be alive and a witness to such greatness as it happened. It is the generation of musicians that set the tone, and the scale of what rnr, is and should be for the hundred lifetimes. Amazing work my friend! Thank you for opening the secret to us regular folk!!!!!!
You are the best guitar teacher I've ever seen on UA-cam thank you so much for what you do I have learned so much from you and I want to tell you how much I appreciate what you do thank you again you're definitely the best
Wow, thanks so much for that. Glad you like.
Yes I’ve always wanted to learn this. Thank you for picking up all the hidden sounds from the isolated tracks. Love it, it makes it so much more authentic.
Such a clever move in the solo to get back to E!
Really shows you how unappreciated Lennon was at rhythm.
In my own opinion , Malcom young , pete townshend and the mighty John lennon ...top 3 rock rythym guitar players of the 20th century
What a fantastic video have you enjoyed playing guitar have a good weekend ❤😊❤😊❤😊
Please do more lessons for these later Beatles songs. They're too good
Fab lesson from The Fabs. Thank you.
Hi Doug
Thanks for bringing this wonderful classic.
I've been a Beatlemaniac for almost six decades and one of the songbooks I've loved to own on my guitar journey is: The Beatles Little Black Songbook.☮️❤️🎸
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
For those who think they can't Travis pick, YES YOU CAN. What you need to do is practice playing just the first note, then adding the next part and play the first 2 beats, and keep adding on another beat, but not before you have it down pat up to that point. Don't try to play it all at once right away.
It’s 100% Rosewood tele on this song
What efecto you use? Chorus? Thanks. I like It your videos salutes from spain
I put all the details of effects in the description
You had mentioned at the beginning of the video you were going to point to someone else who was dealing in beatle songs. Who was that?
yeah those links should have popped up in the top right corner. It's Sam Popkin, here are the two that I referenced ua-cam.com/video/Fh-_A2dujJU/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/9N0pCqGreSs/v-deo.html
Excellent tutorial. The lighting on the fretboard is a bit too bright and the strings disappear from view. I'm working on the Travis picking.
Thx. Just got 2nd camera to help with the detail on the fretboard stuff. Next vid should hopefully resolve that. Thanks for watching
You need to oil that fretboard- it looks very, very dry. Mineral oil, F-One, Fret Doctor- whatever, that thing need some oil. Otherwise, great vid as usual.
Ringo Sun? I guess that works!
I think I said a "Ringo sung" song
The Sun is a Starr, after all.
Octopuses garden wasn’t on the White album .Abbey Road
Cool lesson, poor man's country, lol , funny
Too long introduction...
Too much talking
Have an opinion sure but at least try and be a bit more polite with it.
Stop. This guy rules. Be grateful he's creating this content.
