Learn how to play Little Wing, as performed by Jimi Hendrix released on the Axis Bold as Love album in 1968. The song was recorded in October of 1967.
The lesson covers the great intro riff, what he does during the 2 verses, and then of course the guitar solo section. The song basically has one single chord progression that Jimi
plays through 4 times (+ a little more during fade out). First time is the intro, second and third times are the verses, and the fourth + time is the guitar solo. No bridge section or
different chorus section or anything like that. Just one great chord progression repeated where he improvises over each time with his "Jimi-isms".
My signal chain in this video was my '85 Strat into a Boss GE-7 EQ (pulled mids down slightly), New Instruments Ventillator II (Leslie/rotary speaker pedal), added MXR Phase 90 on solo, split into stereo signal out to a '64 Super Reverb (4x10 jensens) and a 1963 Fender Bassman (2x12 Oxfords). I have affiliate links below if you are interested in picking up any of those
pieces through Sweetwater.
Not that I can perfectly replicate Jimi's sound at all, but I like the mix of the 10s and 12s between those 2 amps, and I think it all comes reasonably close.
Also - I wanted to give a shout out to 3 other UA-cam videos on Little Wing that are definitely worth a watch, check them out.

I clicked like before watching ! Knowing it will be great and help me. Thanks
I LOVE when a lesson has those jump sections first time I've ever heard the GREAT term: JIMI- ISMS
I learnt this one a few years ago, but even when you know the notes and the chords, it's Jimi's nuances, and his deft touch, that makes it virtually impossible to play like him. I've seen and heard many great guitarists in my lifetime, but in my opinion Jimi remains the most talented, and one of the most natural guitarist I've ever come across. Coincidentally, I was going planing to go over this song again as I hadn't played it for a while, so this lesson will help me out.
I heard 'Hendrix in the West' (original UK LP, with the Royal Albert Hall performances) when I was a kid, and it blew my mind! It was one of the main reasons I learned to play guitar. Not a great experience at first; it was on my sister's old knackered acoustic that had bent tuners, and wouldn't stay in tune! Plus, I had no one to show my anything, there was no UA-cam back then, and didn't know what I was doing, I just had to learn the hard way as I went along. No mp3's or software to help either, just an LP and your index finger to skip back to a section in a song, a nightmare, then, eventually cassettes came along - whoopee! In the end, I became quite good, and eventually ended up gigging in a band.
Picking up a guitar and playing gives me immense pleasure, and a satisfaction that's hard to explain. I guess it's the fact that after all those years of practice, you've managed to master an instrument to a decent enough standard to actually play something that people can appreciate.
The best advice I can give is practice, practice, practice!
Great video. 👍
When I started playing guitar, I couldn't afford lessons. Jimi was my favorite guitarist, and Little Wing was my favorite song to learn. I never got any good and never dreamed I'd ever play this whole song. I just want to thank you and the other UA-cam channels for making it possible for me to pretty much have a dream come true. I'm sure your getting paid for this channel, I hope it's enough, and I hope these kids appreciate being able to learn guitar at this level for free. Thanks man....keep it up. Subscribe and Like everyone!
Jimi's slide on the first Am from the 5th fret to the open E.....is GORGEOUS!
You can hear every fret ticking by on the way down.....so simple, but his execution is impeccable!!!!!
You should have 22.9 million subs my friend,, great tune, great lesson
Wouldn't that be awesome?
This is a great lesson!! Thanks for taking the time to do this! All the commentary and details are very much appreciated.
Oh man I can’t wait to dive into this one! I second all the compliments from other people. You really have a teaching style that resonates with me. Thank you for sharing your talents.
This is by far the best guitar lesson on little wing on the net- awesome video, especially the back ground detail on the progression and the explanation of the the techniques etc, thank you very much - best regards from Belgium
This is honestly incredible. Searched so long for a channel like this. Really appreciate the work that goes into it!
Please keep this up!
Welcome! Tell your friends!
Wish I could "like" your lessons more than once. Even when you do songs I've been playing for many years, I always learn something and find it more useful than 95% of other tutorials (or sometimes 100%). Thanks.
Wow, thanks!
Another great lesson, thank you.
I gotta say, I really enjoy and appreciate your format of how you teach and walk through the material.
Well thought out and the tempo moves along nicely (IMHO).
Great lesson. I've been playing this for years and still learned a lot! Thanks
Best overall lessons on UA-cam. Thank you!
Thanks for covering this classic song, one of my all time favourites! Absolutely love your YT channel !🎸🇨🇦
Awesome! Thank you!
I can't believe this lesson is free! Thank you Sir. Great job as always! You make this world a better place one free lesson at a time ❤😊
Jimmy is do dynamics, he shift from straight to swing & vice versa, also emphasize using a grace notes, a great creativity.
Thank you you kind of confirmed all the licks I've been playing that song my whole life.
Love that you teach the whole song, and very well done. There is a lot in this lesson and it never felt like you were getting bogged down in minutia. The pace keeps it interesting, and shows enough for someone to get the whole thing with some practice. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
You are one of the cool guitar uncles, showing us the right way to play classic numbers, Happy New Year, and fondness from Perth Australia
Thank you for the best lesson on Little Wing!
🐻🎸🎵🎶
So much fun and so well explained as usual - thanks again
Excellent teaching/playing!
Really great lesson!
Another great choice. Thanks dude
i posted that in a comment space in one of my FB post for easy finding tomorrow , love the attention to detail . Jimi rules
great lesson, as always , thanks alot.
Thanks! This video filled a ton of gaps in how I play this song!
Thanks a ton Sean!
Thank you - fantastic explanation and demonstration! Back when I was at college in London around 1980, an American student taught me a nice version of Little Wing. In retrospect, it wasn't really true to the original, but still streets ahead of anything I'd seen a UK player do back then - and it certainly impressed my older brother who'd been a Hendrix fan in the '60s when I was next back home! 😉I'm really looking forward to working through your lesson to finally re-learn the song properly and gain fresh insight into some "Hendrix-isms" along the way.
Damn this is super accurate, attention to detail is great.
Very nice job, thank you for sharing.
Pls pls pls, could you do the Couldn't stand the weather lesson by SRV (if you haven't done it already)? This one is awesome! You're the best guitar teacher I've seen so far.
Great choice. Much love
Many thanks ..super playing .
Good job 👍
Fantastic detailed lesson as always! Thanks for all you do. IMO this is one of the greatest “rock” songs of all time. However I think the definitive performance of it was live at Royal Albert Hall, which fortunately is captured on the Hendrix In The West album.
Yes, the "In the West" version is the best! I like it without the bells on the studio version...it flows beautifully and the solo...just stunning!
Song Ive always loved and wanted to play?
Check
Good Strat? (Fender HSS with Texas Specials)
Check
Good Hendrix tone dialed on the amp?

Good lesson?

Looks like its time I learn this....
Super thank you
I always played the opening slide like you, but was never happy with it. I'll always put the emphasis on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings, but it never sounded quite right, so I'll be giving the whole song another go soon. At the moment, I'm going over a few Thin Lizzy songs in honour of Phil Lynott, unbelievably Phil left us 37 years ago on the 4th January 1986!
Awesome 😎
Yeah, sounds like open first on dive. I like you say move across, not up or down, since low notes are higher(towards ceiling)- some say move up a string, but notes are lower can be confusion. Great you give props to other channels. Rhawk awn!!
thanks
Now we're talking!!!! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WOW, man you have GIANT hands just like Jimi!!
Nice!👍🎸🎵
Thanks
Thank you!
Great lesson and breakdown of chords and notes.....but I cant remember link but there is a great version of little wing by 2 guys on ukes.
Thanks .I love my Telecasters but I have one Strat ( U.S.lnca Silver Highway One) and man Strats are cool.
Super!🎸👍!
Your lesson finally helped me get the correct phrasing… this song has been my white whale. Thank you!
Very well done love that strat is that a Nash looks like Ed Kings strat you do great vids ...
Thank you, no its my 85 Fender strat
Great lesson, as usual. Thanks for posting these! I have an unrelated question: what kind of bridge/trem system do you have on that Strat? I’m looking to replace mine, which is a two-point system like yours. Thanks.
I don't know which specific one. I just one day asked to have a new one put on. It was one they had at Guitar Center many years ago. Not sure specific brand
@@12footchain Hmm, OK. Thanks.
@@swatprof it's probably a Wilkinson or gotoh 2 point trem. Pretty common in music stores across America!
@@businessofrhythm2315 thanks, I have seen those come up in searches. I don’t live in the US.
Amazing double stops and thumb -over technique ---thankyou for this valuable update ---
HOW DID HE GET THAT BELL -LIKE TINKLE ---- on his original recording??WAS IT ADDED ONTO THE RECORDING --LATER ?
Probably was an ovetdub. It was a glockenspiel
Fantastic tutorial! I am wondering who you are? A studio guitarist? A giging artist? A teacher? All 3 together? Thank you for giving all these lessons!
Just a guy. Been playing since I was 13. Have played in local bands, nothing that anyone would know. Not a session player. Just a guy with a decent ear and knows lots of songs, likes to share what I know.
You hold the C chord & hammer on to 3 rd fret B String --IS THE correct way ?--then slide up to D chord--17:24
I can't play this great song . Could you do some live Robin Trower , mid 1970's - Winterland . " I Can't Wait Much Longer . " ✨✨🎸🚂✨
Jimi would have 👍
Just subbed, perhaps a lesson the the late great Peter green
I know this, but you explain it so well you've got a new subscriber. 👍
Get a haircut though. 😉
I have small hands, so the "thumb-over" technique is more of a "nose-thumber" for me. I concentrate on the melody parts and let the bass player handle all that stuff. It's his job!
Mind reader ❤
At 17:20 --the C CHORD ---you hammer on (you say catch that A note ) on screen graphics are wrong ---!
LoL... it's all on Jimi tyme ✌️
Ritchie Blackmore totally ripped this song off - check out Rainbow song "Catch the Rainbow"
Jimi was tripped out on acid n stuff how did he do this
You just said it that’s how
Great lesson but your guitar is tuned a half note down!
On purpose for this one. Jimi also tuned down on this
@@12footchain I understand your reason for tuning down. But for the lesson, it would have been easier for us students to have it in normal tuning. As for now, all of us thousands of guitarists have to tune down (and back up again) our guitars every time we try to follow your lesson. I just think it would have been easier to have all lessons in standard tuning even if the original recording is different.
This song is so damn hard to learn --surely there must be an easier way/?
And its not 3 minutes..,..
True. Is that good or bad?
Perhaps the shortest best song ever written.
Wow u bad
Oh that's funny.....your a fantastic player and teacher!clarity.
No wonder he took drugs !
UA-cam ruined this song.
In what way?
@@12footchain its UA-cam's "smoke on the water."
Too much talk.
