    I have 2 - AS 21 cases. Sitting on my bottom shelf in the back.
    Saving for rainy day - ha ha !!! Both have never been machined. All stock - might have to sell to buy groceries if things keep going up !!!!
    Excellent video as always - thanks for the info.

    where 87 came from is back in 1970 what they did is instead of giving you new p/cs they would use a old school piston expander and then there was it looks like a drill press machine that was a cyl bore hone and then stick some .010 rings on it . then they had green end wrist pins that were over sized and hone the bushing in the rod and the piston to match , they charged 8 bucks a piece but when you could get new VW brand p/cs for 10 bucks a piece WHY a 87 is a 85.5 .010 over sized . now they make them new but back in the day they were used .

    Thank You for sharing with the VW community. The thin wall 87 mm and 92 mm cylinders are a bit risky = hot running... A 1904 is a good choice due to very little case clearance work. The nice cylinder heads available today save a lot of money. Having custom head porting is money. One quick point for performance is with a higher lift/duration cam you can bump up compression. For my own engine I will run 9 to 1 in a bug with a 110 cam. In a bus, 8.5 to 1 (realizing a bus engine has a shorter lifespan 😊

    I used to be a vw mechanic in early 2000’s, that 110 cam is old school mentality, I’ll try and find my old cam profiles but we ran special grind web cams, there’s a lot goes into making power but yes a good cam is where to start. I found using a flapper paper, made my own tool with a rough grit paper and de burring heads urself is way to go saving money.

    I gave the 1.25 Rockers to my wife for her dune buggy I rebuilt. It gave it a little more pop. And in that fiberglass car it moves good.

      Yea they do help a bit. But the Duration on the stock cam is way too short. need at least 250 or more duration I like 265 or more.

    Mike, what are the reasons for not building a single relief case if you are not building a performance motor? I have seen people build them to 1904 or even bigger

    Thank you you all way give your viewer different options I have Mexican cases are Brazilian heads good quality for building a stronger 1600 you don't recommend a 1641 for a bus what do you recommend ? Asking for a friend !

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  7 місяців тому

      74 stroke. if your keeping a stock case and have access to head machine work only 1800. if you have only stock heads you can do 74 stroke 85.5 But you will need to trim the piston skirts on either one. Not hard to do.

    Well said Mike. I am
    Looking at building a 1904 just like in one of your videos. W110 cam good to use or do you recommend something else? I am thinking about using a Holey Sniper too.

      yea that cam is great.....Or try Scat they have a few that are cheap. But most I think need ratio rockers. C20 C25....1.25 rockers. Cheap prices

    Hi Mike, a dumb question, perhaps. I have a 1302 with dual port 1300cc (40hp) and the plan is to go up a bit with 1600 (or 1641) kit combined with engle 100 or 110. If i understand correctly, performance cams have better material, build quality and some have more agressive lifts, which will in turn build a bit more compression, as I understand. Are stock heads capable of this extra pressure? This is not going to be a race rocket, just a bit more responsive summer drive.

    By changing the cams, will the fuel economy is heavily affected?
    Currently running 1641, and seems to be running hot. My Beetle is a Cabrio so it has lesser cooling intake.

    If you are not including the hydraulic cam followers used in the Type IV (4) and the elephant foot rocker arms then, in my opinion, you are not incorporating the engine parts that Bob Hoover incorporated in his engines, both motor vehicle and aircraft engines.
