    So now that IPC and cache have been sorted out, the only thing that AMD needs to fix is bringing their new architectures in the iGPU

    • @BrattyBiker
      @BrattyBiker 3 роки тому +83

      The bottleneck here is the memory bandwidth and not architecture. They will most likely go with RDNA2 with the Zen 4 APUs which can utilize the faster DDR5 chips so you can expect Desktop RX560 (R9 270X) Performance on the next gen APUs.

    • @vncube1
      @vncube1 3 роки тому +41

      Which will be sad to watch because even with the most advanced process node for x86 in the world, PCIe 4 and GPU hogging so much die space, Xe Graphics doesn't completely blow Vega 8 out of the water. Switch to RNDA2 and AMD can be lazy with iGPU progress for another 2 to 3 years.

Most of the time CU count does not matter, hence why 4xxx series (and 5xxx too) APUs are able to compete with previous ones albeit with lower CU count but with much higher clockspeed (and some minor tweaks) are able to outperform them in most instances. So it's 50/50, in some scenarios it matters, in some others not that much. On the other note, APUs are power and thermally restricted, so you cant just simply put more cores and increase clockspeed, as integrated graphics share power with cpu cores, so there's that. Also it's not linear scaling with CUs due memory bandwidth i mentioned before.

      Its somewhat frustrating to keep hearing reviews mention it, because OEMs have the option to put it in AMD devices but don't. Intel has a certification process to use the term Thunderbolt(and logo), that would likely either charge too much for, or outright block in a lot of cases. Asrock has 1 officially certified AMD ITX motherboard, and other AMD desktop boards with it. Other board makers offer it, without certification.
      On the flip side, the majority of people don't actually use it when they have it. The most legitimate use is from native devices, which are niche uses like audio interfaces. Most of those people are using a Mac. Practically everyone else is fine with USB and only ever plug in a mouse and 1 storage device.

    Also disappointing that they STILL haven't updated to RDNA (1 or 2) on the mobile parts.

    Do you think it is worth to perform a "bloated" benchmark? By that I mean the average office user, so multiple excel and word instances open. Multiple Chrome tabs and probably with one playing music from youtube or spotify. Outlook and Teams running too.
    The idea here is too see how much performance we lose by having all that open and if a processor with more cores can hold better in those case (This goes directly against your Tiger-lake conclusion where you said you would get the 4c/8t for the higher ST performance and that 8c/16t is kinda overkill anyway for this form factor).

      Background apps consume very very very little CPU. Even spotify while playing barely makes a difference on my 10 year old i5 laptop.
      I get where you're going with this though, and Gamers Nexus actually did test it, and found that if they made an absolute effort to download and install the entire internet's worth of free gadgets they lost.... about 1-2% FPS in their gaming suite.
      Modern day programs use what is known as an event loop. That is, the program is completely frozen until some kind of event runs in (muse click, network package, etc). Programs that poll services (like Outlook in online mode) use an event timer. That is, it tells the OS that it want's to sleep for 10 seconds voluntarily. The OS then wakes it up, it checks for new data in it's network socket, and if that is empty, orders another 10 seconds of sleep. It only takes a few hundred clock ticks of CPU time to check if there is data in the socket, so even triggering every 0.1 second wouldn't make it observable to the user. The background noise in Windows itself (or rather, it's service executables) is far too unpredictable to put your finger down on a single back ground app.

    One thing to make the 5kU (or 5kH* for that matter) Ryzen APU better option than Intel Tiger Lakes, besides the architectural significant factors such as M.2 NVMe PCIe4 support or USB3.2.2x2/USB4 support or TB3+ support, is to make the VCE just as good (and as efficient and as performant and as widely supported) or better than Intel's QSV. Cause Intel doesn't need in many cases to win in a H264/5 software de-/en-coding as often such thing is simply offloaded to the significantly better QSV in the Xe iGPU that's also supported by most tools nearly out of the box.

Core count and cache size is what is going to determine, way down the track, when a system is going to feel sluggish in day-to-day use. I disagree with you on the confusing nature of the naming.
    Given your testing I actually think it is very good and informs well about the products :
    - In the 5000U line-up for the same number of cores Zen 2 are under their Zen 3 counterparts. The 5000H line-up also doesn't use the 700 500 and 300, so the seem to be reserved to the Zen 2 parts.
    - The results between the 4800U and 5800U are very close (except on the cache heavy applications). So the same is probably true comparing the 5700U and 5600U.
    Now a interesting comparison now would be the 5700U vs 5600U, on those cache heavy applications. Would the larger and better cache would be enough to make the 5600U perform better than the 5700U ?
    But other than that case, the naming does seem to be very close to the reality. So in my opinion it is not misleading a poorly informed consumer.
    Although if the 5600U significantly outperforms the 5700U, it wouldn't be quite as a good naming. But even in that case it would still be well better average for a laptop related naming scheme.
