It really is awesome. I dove into Chemistry in the '90s and am still grasping those concepts. Music theory is the same for me, takes awhile to 'get it' so I'm intrigued!

@@easytoslip I might suggest that you check out 'stich method' on youtube as this dude was able to explain theory in a way that felt like an epiphany. As well, he has a few Phish related lessons and does 'in the mind of' lessons to help you understand where Trey's style comes from, or Claptop, etc.
      changed my guitar life.

I was a ween fan before Phish played Roses. My friend assumed most Phish fans our age loved Ween and that's why Phish decided to cover the song. That's the ironic part.

I've been playing guitar for over half of my life but I was never able to understand how Phish composes jams. These videos are showing me that it is something I can learn to do and it's more than just magic.
That being said, the theory behind it sure seems like magic. Thanks for exposing me to the inner workings of these massive jams. It's made my learning process a lot more fun.

Can't tell you how much these videos have helped me out... I am 40 and just started playing drums with my buddies in a band about six months ago. I have zero percussion experience and I am super-lame on guitar and bass, never took any lessons or anything like that. The other guys are really good. I really have no idea what is going on. We live in Wisconsin so we play some legit cow funk. I am learning how to help out our jams more by watching what Fish does in context of the structures the other guys are laying down. I can keep a solid beat (allegedly) and I have a pretty good feel for the changes and everything like that, but my repertoire of fills is very limited and I don't stray very far from the kick drum, snare and hi-hat. I am taking it slowly because I don't want to mess up. All I can say is Fish is amazing, I really appreciate even more what he does now that I am trying to do something akin to the same thing.

Keep it up homie. It's obvious you have a sense of respect for music and your bandmates. I can also see taking it slow to get the building blocks down. My 2 cents, is that sometimes we have to be grossly, horribly wrong to eventually get it right. I heard toddlers babble "every conceivable phoneme" before they learn to put coherent words together.

I'm definitely showing this video to my band so they have more insight into how Phish actually interacts and drives jams forward. During our "cow funk" jams they have been hesitant to take risks by changing key and mode because they think they think our crowds will get bored of 15+ minute jams, but this video shows the beautiful payoff of those risks.

I've been playing guitar for a couple years now. I've learned several scales and now I'm exploring the modes. However, the thing I struggle with the most is connecting all these dots that I now have in my head. I really think this series has helped me tremendously with that. I now have examples where I know exactly what they're doing, I can rewind, I can play along, and finally learn how all these things relate to one another, and how I can do it myself. Thank you

I’ve watched all this videos and honestly have very little knowledge of any of it, but I’ve learned a lot from watching them and now understanding exactally what’s going on. Our fans like to create this whatever between us and Phish, but that’s about them; it’s not about us. When I think of Phish, I think of 1991 or 1992, being at Elektra Records in New York, and those guys were there. They weren’t as huge as they are now, obviously, and no one had heard of Ween. And we were raiding the record closet together, stealing the entire Doors catalog and the Stooges and shit. We were taking Linda Ronstadt-anything that was on Elektra. They’re my bros-they’re our dudes. We have history, we have tons in common and now we’ve got the same management. There aren’t a hell of a lot of bands that have been together for as long as either of us, and there’s a kinship there. And there’s also a competitive little fun thing. It’s funny to watch people freak out on the internet. We didn’t have any plans to jam together [at Lockn’ in 2016], but I’m sure if things lined up and all the gear was set up and we were all hanging out, it would happen. Fuck it, I fucking love jamming with anybody. I love jams. - Deaner

Also mocking the jam scene, which now basically sustains them, whether they want to admit it or not. the same people who see phish see ween, and they play jam festivals. and the two bands, they're not that dissimilar. Not sure why they direct hate towards a band that only helped to spread the word about Ween.

have missed your videos recently, but thoroughly enjoyed this one. The Ween clips about Phish are funny. As a long time fan of the band, first show in 1993, I've crossed many people that just don't get it. The Howard Stern commentary on Phish is really funny example of the "don't get it." This jam is a good example of how a song can get off rough but go to magical places. I was not a big fan of the new tune Wombat until they played it at the Gorge summer 2018, a transformative moment for my relationship with that song. Like any valued and lasting relationship there is patience, longing, and fulfillment. It's clear how special this band and their music is to you. Thanks for sharing that appreciation.

There were a lot of links between Ween and the jam band scene. I wouldn't take anything Mickey says about modern music too seriously, anyway, since he's always basically said he's a classic rock guy, as well as Prince and P-funk. I mean, their bassist of 30 years, Dave Dreiwitz, is the bassist in JRAD. And Gener wrote an amazing tribute to Jerry when he died. Roses Are Free is really a bit of a hippie jam anyway, at least the words, although the music is pure Paisley Park. As for the Phish version, it's quite good, though it's not as loose as Ween have made it when they retooled it as a touring band.

Set II from 1998-04-03 (the crowd energy during Loving Cup, stage man, Carini is only the cherry) is definitely in my Top 3. This set started as trickled up as can be.. This loop beginig he speaks of in video is absolutely one of my favorite moments of anticipating going off to improv land. I was aware of the fact that this is AGAIG. For ME, my spot to dance perfect. Chemistry, prefect, & Roses >JAM, etc. One of the 👌 A1 Sauce set

Great work, Amar. Would love to see a similar analysis for the 2/28/03 "Gin". I know you've already expertly covered the Tweezer from this same show, but imo, that Gin represents even richer theoretical territory to dive into. Not necessarily in a macro "type ii" context, but from the interplay between the band in their use of the C mixolydian and C dorian modes, which leads to one of the most subtle and expertly crafted peaks in the band's history.

Would love to have the Runaway Makisupian Jimalope from 8/10 last year, or the Halleys Comet from 11/22/97 broken down or maybe the Sand from 12/16/99 or the Cypress Sand.
. Thanks for your amazing insight.

I like these videos a lot because he explains like "hey here are all of these cool things that are happening and here's why this jam is neat using music theory"
and then I'm just sitting here like "I like the pretty noises Trey and Page make and Mike is very good at bass and keeping down the fort and I like it"

Gods, 1992 is when I started going to see Phish. I didn't mind the 'newer' stuff though :) It just sucks that i have yet to see them live in the 21st century!

Paige was singing ween's praises on the 92 new years run. They were turning their phans on to ween before they covered roses.

Love these so much. But as a non musician some of your stuff goes a bit over my head. But still love what you're doing!
