Trey Anastasio's guitar style has always been an enigmatic, evolving lynchpin of Phish' music. In this video, I try to decode some of his approaches by analyzing the 6.17.04 version of Free, as played by Phish and featured on the Phish Live In Brooklyn DVD/CD set.

Amar I just want to say these videos you're making are super interesting and appreciated. As a long time fan who almost never bothers to get close enough to actually see how each member is constantly feeding and reading the others without and words being spoken. Seeing exactly how they're bouncing between related chords, communicating all the while improvising for minutes on end....I honestly can't really respect them anymore than I already do but wow...your videos are showing me exactly why I've been a fan since the very first time I heard them.

Your "Anatomy" Series is exactly what I drop in the laps of the ignorant folks who say things like " Phish is horrible" " Boring noodle-y guitar playing" or" Phish sucks, musically"...You give instruction and insight on how this band has managed to dazzle those who " get it" and love Phish's licorice.
Can't tell you how valuable it is to see a breakdown like this, the end of the playthrough with tabs is a godsend to figuring out how Trey goes through patterns, thank you!
This is heat, love the analysis on the whole band that goes very unnoticed in almost all other Phish/Dead guitar lessons. Once you start playing w a regular group you realize how much another member's playing can lift up your own

Well it turned out great, I really like the way you analyze things and your knowledge on music theory is fantastic. I've been playing guitar 5 years now and Trey's style is very hard to achieve but you make it very simple for me to understand. Loving these lessons, got this one pretty close to memorized now! Still trying to get limb by limb up to speed! (Pretty accurate at 90% and pushing forward) I would love to see something that tackles trays approach to a mixolydian style jam, don't really care which song, there are a bunch!

I know I’m three years late to this video, but I just wanna day how awesome all the videos you’ve done on Phish are amazing. Also I feel as if 2004 often gets overlooked for a few reasons. First it started with the disaster that was Vegas and was bookended by another one in Coventry. But if you forget this shows and dive into the June and August shows, you will find so much incredible music. I didn’t miss a single show between 7/29/03 -3/8/09. While Starlake > IT was easily the best week of shows between that time, June 04 was absolutely awesome. A perfect example is the Julius from 6/20/04. Trey shredded it so hard, he broke a string onstage for the first time in like 20 years
The Piper from 6/19/04 is one of the most unbelievable jams I’ve ever heard. Wish i could’ve seen it

I'm interested in the cues and signals used, gestures and musical, during improvisation by the members of Phish. I heard about how they practiced literally hundreds of different cues in the late 80s / early 90s. If you know more, please continue doing videos on them!

Are you standing on one o them balance boards by any chance? If you are, you're pretty good at it as your motions are truly controlled. Back and forth... back and forth. I've only witnessed this kind of finesse at a Cirque Du Soleil performance.
Dude! Every time I come back to your channel it gets better and better! Love the idea of Fishman 'clearing the board' and had never thought of it like that. What led you to infer that Trey's physical step was a signal to stretch the jam out of normal territory? I've never heard or seen any indication of that before. Was it pretty common to see in 1.0 and 2.0?
Also your ear is pretty incredible. Do you have perfect pitch? It can be so hard to distinguish exactly what Trey is doing when you're listening to the rest of the band too.
Hey Alex, I'm so glad you enjoyed this vid, thank you for the kind words. To answer your question, I don't have perfect pitch but I often wish I did. I've been transcribing Trey's solos for over 20 years so I just have a lot of practice at it.
In terms of the "step", there was a really popular fan-made Phish book in the late 90s called the Pharmer's Almanac. I recall reading an article in the book where the author was talking about how Trey would often take a step away from the mic when he would start a solo, and then step back towards it when he was ready to end his solo. As it turns out, this is a really common move that isn't limited to just Trey or Phish, a lot of musicians use this kind of signal. Taking a step doesn't always mean that Trey wants to stretch the jam out of normal territory, it can mean that he wants to take it "somewhere else." That could mean ending the jam, segueing into another song, etc. In this case, he steps away from Mike, which ends the guitar/bass battle and the jam moves onto another section.

I love this. Insight to how this band manages to do what they do and perpetually melt faces each show. I now must request an anatomy of the incredible RunawayJim>Antelope>Makisupa Policeman the guys threw down in Raleigh on the 10th. I was blown away out on that lawn as they "Brought it back to Jim, ah-fucking-gain." God what a night, my 19th show, and it was epic.
The band understands all this science with extreme precision. There is so much going on musically that the every day Phish Phan does not get on a conscious level, but he/she will really feel it deep with in. They will respond to the jam and improvisations naturally and ....
Does anyone know what kind of pedal Trey is using to get such a thick, slimy sound right at the beginning of the solo? It cant just be two Tube Screamers can it?
Hey Patrick, I'm in the process of creating a 10 video course on how to play this solo. I'll talk more about his tone and effects in that series, but the short answer is that Trey is using his Digitech Whammy II for this solo. He has it set to play one octave down, with the wet signal at 100% and the dry signal at 0. He also has at least one of the two tubescreamers engaged

This is great! Regarding your guitar - do you find you get fewer harmonics when playing your hollowbody compared to other guitars? I recently got one and LOVE the tone but get almost no harmonics when playing. Using the same picking technique playing the same type of things with my CE24 I get all sorts of harmonics - especially on string bends (similar to trey). Not sure if it's the guitar or the pickups in my HB.
Hey Mole! I can relate to your predicament. I fell in love with this guitar, but there are times that I felt that it suffered from a 'flat' sound. The PRS HB II has the the potential to give you incredible harmonics, but it really needs to be paired with the "right" amp. I spent years trying to find the best match, and found that the Fender family (Deluxe Reverb, Vibrolux Reverb, Princeton, etc.) is my favorite and allows this guitar to fully express all it has to offer. Also, the typical HB II pickups don't seem to be as high output as classic PAF-style humbuckers, so for the best sound it's crucial that the pickup height is set perfectly. If you aren't a pro at setting pickup height, take it to someone who is. I bet you'll see a positive difference!

Request: breaking down Trey heart-melting quasi-composed solos (as opposed to jams), in ballads like Corinna, Caspian, Mexican Cousin, Miss You, Farmhouse, Sample, Bug, Circus, Heavy Things, Shade, Roses, etc or in rockers like Julius, Zero, Loving Cup, 46 Days, GTBT, etc. Besides the notes/chords/modes and the tone, one of the toughest and most crucial things to get right to emulate Trey is his attack and feel of each note so would be sick to get your take on how to work towards that!

Amar, great videos; what a jam. Is it helpful to think about what mode the different sections of the jam are in? if your interested in guitar inspired by Languedoc, check out Equator Intruments. It is a custom built guitar by a guy name David who is a very fine luthier. It is a very collaborative process and he even lets you pick out the specific pieces of wood. I love my equator, it never goes out of tune (well almost).Keep it up!
Hey Carl, it definitely can be helpful to think about what mode the different sections of the jams are. Especially in early Phish, they treat jam tonalities pretty flexibly and Trey often explores several modes. But you are correct that different jams often have one central mode. The ending YEM funk jam is predominately G dorian for example. And yes, I'm a big fan of Equator instruments - I think they're making some wonderful guitars!
